2 Veterans Found With Stolen Military Guns and Nazi Material, Officials Say

New York Times07-06-2025
Two masked men dressed in fitness clothing worn by Army Rangers made their way onto a military base some 50 miles south of Seattle on Sunday night. The authorities said the men were intent on stealing thousands of dollars in combat equipment from an Army Ranger regiment there.
However, the robbery quickly went awry.
A soldier walked in and began asking questions as the two men were surrounded by piles of equipment. The soldier was bludgeoned with a hammer and one of the attackers brandished a knife.
As the robbers fled, they dropped a bloody rucksack full of stolen combat gear. Handwritten on the rucksack was the name 'Fields,' which investigators discovered matched the last name of a man whose identification had been scanned when he drove that day onto the military installation, Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
His name led the authorities to a home elsewhere in Washington State, where they said they discovered a startling scene: rooms and rooms of Nazi and white supremacy paraphernalia and a stockpile of stolen weapons.
That, according to a criminal complaint filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Washington, tells the story of the investigation that led to the two men, identified by the authorities as Charles Ethan Fields and Levi Austin Frakes, being charged with assault, robbery and theft of government property 'by force and by violence and by intimidation.'
The 11-page complaint and a Facebook post by the sheriff of Thurston County, Wash., so far amounts to the only public information about the activities of the two men, who were both identified in the complaint as veterans, leaving more questions than the authorities will currently answer.

Authorities regained control with military support after 12 hoursSeven people were killed and 11 others were injured in a Mexican prison riot on Sunday where inmates were protesting treatment inside the prison due to the activities of a criminal group, authorities said. The violence broke out Saturday afternoon and stretched into the night at a prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz, according to a statement from the state security ministry. Inmates maintained control of the facility for 12 hours. Authorities in Veracruz were able to carry out a 'coordinated operation' with support from the military to regain control of the prison. 'As a result of the riot, we report the tragic deaths of seven inmates and 11 injured people,' the statement said. Those who survived the prison riot are being treated in various hospitals for their injuries, authorities said. Three inmates were also relocated to a different facility as a result of the riot, the state security ministry said. The inmates fought and set fire to the facility after demanding that authorities allow human rights activists and the press inside the prison, alleging the criminal group "Grupo Sombra" was abusing and extorting inmates, El País and the Associated Press prison was holding 778 inmates in June — more than the 735 inmates it was designed to hold, according to the AP. Veracruz is one of the most violent states in Mexico, El País reported. Days before the riot, a taxi driver was shot and hospitalized. Attorney General Bondi orders prosecutors to start grand jury probe into Obama officials over Russia investigation

Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into accusations that members of the Obama administration manufactured intelligence about Russia's 2016 election interference, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. A grand jury would be able to issue subpoenas as part of a criminal investigation into renewed allegations that Democratic officials tried to smear Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign by falsely alleging his campaign was colluding with the Russian government. It could also consider an indictment should the Justice Department decide to pursue a criminal case. The move follows a referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified documents in July that she alleges undermine the Obama administration's conclusion that Russia tried to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. Gabbard requested that the Justice Department investigate former President Barack Obama and top officials in his administration for an alleged conspiracy. Soon after Gabbard's referral, Bondi announced that the DOJ was creating a 'strike force' to assess the evidence released by Gabbard and 'investigate potential next legal steps which might stem from DNI Gabbard's disclosures.' The Justice Department declined to comment. Fox News first reported Bondi's grand jury request. This story is breaking and will be updated.

The America We Knew Is Rapidly Slipping Away

Of all the terrible things Donald Trump has said and done as president, the most dangerous one just happened on Friday. Trump, in effect, ordered our trusted and independent government office of economic statistics to become as big a liar as he is. He fired Erika McEntarfer, the Senate-confirmed head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for bringing him economic news he did not like, and in the hours immediately following, the second most dangerous thing happened: The senior Trump officials most responsible for running our economy — people who in their private businesses never would have contemplated firing a subordinate who brought them financial data they did not like — all went along for the ride. Rather than saying to Trump: Mr. President, if you don't reconsider this decision — if you fire the top labor bureau statistician because she brought you bad economic news — how will anyone in the future trust that office when it issues good news' — they immediately covered for him. As The Wall Street Journal pointed out, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer had actually gone on Bloomberg TV early Friday and declared that even though the jobs report that had just been released was revised downward for May and June, 'we've seen positive job growth.' But as soon as she got the news hours later that Trump had fired the very B.L.S. director who reports to her, she wrote on X: 'I agree wholeheartedly with @POTUS that our jobs numbers must be fair, accurate, and never manipulated for political purposes.' As The Journal asked: 'So were the jobs data that were 'positive' in the morning rigged by the afternoon?' Of course not. The moment I heard what Trump had done, I had a flashback. It was January 2021, and it had just been reported that Trump, after losing the 2020 election, had tried to pressure Georgia's Republican secretary of state to 'find' him enough votes — exactly 11,780, Trump said — to overturn the presidential election and even threatened him with 'a criminal offense' if he didn't. The pressure came during an hourlong telephone call, according to an audio recording of the conversation. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
