Ship attacked in Red Sea near Yemen amid ongoing regional tensions
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as tensions remain high in the Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war and after the Iran-Israel war and airstrikes by the United States targeting Iranian nuclear sites.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre said that an armed security team on the ship had returned fire and that the situation is ongoing.
Authorities are investigating, it said.
Yemen's Houthi rebels have been launching missile and drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the region in what the group's leadership has described as an effort to end Israel's offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Between November 2023 and January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and killing four sailors. That has greatly reduced the flow of trade through the Red Sea corridor, which typically sees USD 1 trillion of goods move through it annually.
The Houthis paused attacks in a self-imposed ceasefire until the US launched a broad assault against the rebels in mid-March. That ended weeks later and the Houthis haven't attacked a vessel, though they have continued occasional missile attacks targeting Israel.
Meanwhile, a wider, decadelong war in Yemen between the Houthis and the country's exiled government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, remains in a stalemate.
Pirates from Somalia also have operated in the region, though typically they've sought to capture vessels either to rob or ransom their crews.

Trump To Host Netanyahu In Close Door Meeting Today, Likely To Push For End To Gaza War
Last Updated: Netanyahu said before departing for the US that Donald Trump could "definitely help advance" a deal with Hamas in Gaza. In a third meeting between the two since Donald Trump took over power, the US President will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to push for an end to the war in Gaza. This comes after Israel and Hamas held indirect talks in Qatar on the ceasefire. The negotiations began on Sunday, July 6, and continued into Monday. Trump has said that he believes there is a 'good chance" that there would be an agreement this week for a ceasefire in Gaza. The President will host dinner behind closed doors with Netanyahu, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. Trump has, in recent weeks, expressed increasing concerns over the Gaza situation. It was Trump's 'utmost priority…to end the war in Gaza and to return all of the hostages," Leavitt said at the briefing on Monday. She said Trump wants Hamas to accept a peace deal right away. The deal, supported by Israel, includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in Gaza, in return for freeing Palestinian prisoners. The proposal was put together by the US. The latest round of talks about the Gaza war started on Sunday in Doha. The two sides, Hamas and Israel, were kept in separate rooms in the same building. A second round of talks took place on Monday, but a Palestinian official told AFP that there was 'no breakthrough." The official also said that both sides were expected to continue the talks later that same day. Speaking before heading to Washington, Netanyahu said his meeting with the US President could 'definitely help advance" a deal with Hamas. Trump earlier said that he wanted to discuss a 'permanent deal" with Iran during talks with Netanyahu. He recently brokered a truce between Israel and Iran, who fought a 12-day war. The US also struck three Iranian nuclear sites, leading to a gradual end of the war. (With AFP inputs) First Published: July 08, 2025, 02:37 IST

Houthi Rebels Say 'FORCED' Israeli Retreat During Air Assault On Yemeni Cities
/ Jul 08, 2025, 02:28AM IST Tensions flared as Yemen's Houthi group claimed to have repelled Israeli airstrikes, forcing IDF jets to leave Yemeni airspace before they could drop bombs. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said Yemen's air defences confronted Israeli warplanes, while reports suggested the Houthis fired 11 missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation. Meanwhile, Israel confirmed strikes on Houthi positions in Hodeidah, Ras Isa, Salif, and a key power station, following a suspected Houthi attack on a ship in the Red Sea.

Renaming controversy mars reopening of VR school in Nellore
Tirupati: Controversy marred the reopening of the 150-year-old VR school on the very first day as endowments minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy raised objection to the renaming the school as VR municipal corporation school. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Soon after HRD minister Nara Lokesh formally reopened the school on Monday, Ramnarayana Reddy expressed his displeasure over the renaming of the school in his address. The school, which was established in 1875, was shut down in 2021 during the erstwhile YSRCP regime. Till then, control of the British era school's management was with the Anam family, considered a powerful political family in Nellore since the times of AC Subba Reddy, who was the first person from the Anam family to rise to the position of state minister. While former legislator Anam Vivekananda Reddy continued as the president of the management committee of VR college and school for several decades, Ramnarayana Reddy, the present endowments minister, was the president of the committee around the time of the school's closure in 2021. After Lokesh reopened the school, the minister raised his objection over the renaming of the school as VR municipal corporation school, just because municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana extended support for its development and reopening. "The erstwhile YSRCP regime bore a grudge against me and got me removed from the management committee's president position. However, the management of VR school still wrests with the Anam family," he asserted. In an apparent dig aimed at fellow cabinet minister Narayana, he suggested that the municipal administration minister should adopt and develop more govt schools in the state. "Narayana ventured into politics only after tasting success with the corporate schools established by him across the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But ours is a family with very long political legacy. We have been in politics from the very beginning," he said. After remaining closed for four years, the school was renovated and upgraded to international standards by the NDA govt in the state, mainly due to the efforts of Narayana. In a noble gesture, the school has provided admissions to nearly 1,000 students from underprivileged sections of the society. Lokesh visited all the classrooms and interacted with students and teaching staff. He also visited the playground. "This school provided education to stalwarts from all walks of life, like former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, playback singer SP Balasubramanyam, senior leaders Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy and Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, to name a few. It is my dream to transform school education in the state in a big way by upgrading govt schools in the state to corporate school standards," he said.
