A gift an employee received to commemorate Nurses Week has left the internet reeling.
The Redditor, u/psychRN1975, took to the platform to share the token of appreciation they were given: a small plastic bag containing matches, a life saver, a Starburst, a paperclip, rubber bands, and a tootsie toll.
"Nurses week .... I'd rather just be ignored ty," she wrote in the subreddit "mildly infuriating," where the post quickly went viral, amassing over 86,000 upvotes.
The gift came with a note attempting to give meaning to each item: "Matches...to light your fire when you are burnt out, Life Saver...To remind you of the times you have been one, Starburst...For the burst of energy you will need, Paperclip...To hold it all together, Rubber bands...To Remind you that flexibility is key. Tootsie Roll...To help you roll with the punches."
While well-intentioned, many online saw the gesture as tone-deaf and redundant—a symbolic gesture that felt more like a formality than true appreciation.
What Is Nurses Week?
Nurses Week, recognized annually from May 6 through May 12, is a time to honor the critical contributions of nurses across the country. The celebration focuses on recognizing nurses' tireless efforts and the impact they have on patients and communities, according to the American Nurses Association.
Expert Insight
Katie Bull, MSN, EdD, RN, and founder of The Bullish Nurse, told Newsweek the issue goes deeper than a questionable gift.
"These lack-luster gifts are not about bad gift-giving, it's what they represent. I hear from thousands of nurses and the frustration is centered on hospitals enjoying the optics of nurse appreciation while ignoring the realities of unsafe staffing, workplace violence prevention, stagnant pay, and lack of real resources to address burnout and nurse mental health needs," she said.
"Appreciation without action feels less like gratitude and more like a growing disconnect between the lived experiences of bedside nurses and hospitals' portrayal of nurses as heroes."

Reddit Reacts
The post sparked a chorus of discontent from healthcare workers and supporters alike.
"Damn. Were they too cheap to spring for doughnuts?" asked one user.
"Honestly a great point. I would (personally) feel more appreciated by donuts than a soulless baggie trying to pretend meaningful," another wrote.
"I once got a scratch-off from management for working hard on Black Friday. I was told it would either say 'good job' or '$20 gift card' and thought that was a joke and it would just be a gift card. It said good job," shared another commenter.
"This year one of the techs bought the donuts for the nurses. Healthcare was treated better before COVID. Then they called us 'heroes.' Guess that was just justification for them to treat us worse," one user reflected.
And the issue isn't exclusive to nursing. "Oh hey, we got the EXACT same thing for teachers week," another chimed in.

WWE Takes Extra Precautions After Scary Roxanne Perez Incident

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Following a disturbing series of online threats, WWE has been taking increased security measures to ensure the safety of RAW superstar Roxanne Perez. The company is reportedly monitoring the situation very closely. During her scheduled appearance at the Money in the Bank Superstore in Santa Monica this past weekend, officials took extra precautions. According to a report from Fightful Select, there was a heightened security presence for her photo-op. This action comes after the 23-year-old was the victim of doxxing and death threats from an online stalker. The individual allegedly posted what they claimed was her home address and made direct threats on social media earlier this month. The situation became so alarming that it prompted a public response from WWE RAW General Manager Adam Pearce. At the time, Pearce confirmed that the threats had been reported to the appropriate authorities. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation He stated, "It has been reported. If you know what I'm talking about, then you know what I'm talking about. Thank you to everyone who made me aware." Despite the frightening circumstances, Perez has continued to fulfill her professional obligations with remarkable composure. She competed in her first-ever Money in the Bank Ladder Match on Saturday night, just one day after teaming with Naomi and Giulia on SmackDown. The threats against Perez are part of a concerning trend of harassment targeting professional wrestlers. These incidents highlight public figures' serious safety challenges and the necessity of a proactive approach from promotions like WWE. Since signing in March 2022, Perez has had a highly decorated career in WWE. She immediately made her mark in NXT by winning the inaugural NXT Women's Breakout Tournament, which earned her a championship contract. She and her friend Cora Jade then captured the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship at The Great American Bash in 2022. After Jade turned on her, costing her a shot at the NXT Women's Championship and vacating the tag titles, Perez embarked on a singles run. In December 2022, she won the first-ever Women's Iron Survivor Challenge at NXT Deadline. Just three days later, she defeated Mandy Rose to win her first NXT Women's Championship. After losing the title, Perez underwent a character change, turning heel in early 2024. This led her to capture the NXT Women's Championship for a second time at Stand & Deliver 2024 by defeating Lyra Valkyria. After a dominant second reign, Perez officially joined the main roster as part of the Raw brand in May 2025. She quickly qualified for her first Money in the Bank ladder match, solidifying her status as a top rising star in the company. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

Delivery Driver Spots Cat—Doorbell Cam Captures 'Emotional Damage'

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The internet is in stitches after a delivery driver asked a pet parent a certain question about her cat. Michaela Roxy Davies, known on TikTok as @michaeladavies12, came to the front door when she noticed a delivery driver dropping off a package. Along with Davies came her cat Lily, who is also referred to as Fat Lily, which led the delivery driver to ask: "Is she pregnant?" This question didn't come as a surprise, Davies told Newsweek via TikTok, "She's a big gal and always has been!" Davies responded to the driver that Lily isn't pregnant and instead she's "just really fat." The two of them started laughing, which was captured on her Ring camera and posted to TikTok last week, bringing in over 156,500 views and 29,900 likes. "He didn't say anything else about Fat Lily afterwards, was just taking a picture of my parcel," Davies said. "He was a lovely guy and found it funny." The end of the video included a close-up picture of Fat Lily. She looked completely unamused by the question, causing her "emotional damage." "Not the delivery man fat-shaming your cat," wrote one user. Another commented on the picture of Lily: "The pain in her eyes!!! Don't worry girl, we've all been there." A third user added: "You leave her alone!" Cats' Weight While the delivery driver's comment might've hurt Lily's feelings, the truth is that she is not the only cat weighing in on the heavier side. A PetMD article from last year reported that about 61 percent of cats are overweight. It's almost impossible to say "no" to those begging eyes for another treat or helping of food, but obesity in cats can lead to health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancers and a weakened immune system. It can also shorten a cat's lifespan. Every cat is at risk of becoming overweight, but the article shared that several cat breeds are more susceptible to weight gain. Those breeds include Persian, Manx, British and American shorthaired, exotic shorthaired, Ragamuffin, Birman, Sphynx, Maine Coons and Norweigan Forest cats. These cats often prefer napping the day away instead of playing. Plus, they can never turn down food. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
