Carhartt WIP Lands in Johor Bahru with a Bold, Culture-Driven Space

Hypebeast6 hours ago

Carhartt WIPhas officially opened the doors to its third Malaysian location, this time in the thriving southern city of Johor Bahru. Located on the ground floor of The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, the 1,819-square-foot store quietly made its debut. The new space quickly became a magnet for design fans and streetwear loyalists alike, offering a seamless blend of rugged workwear heritage and contemporary industrial aesthetic.
The store was designed by Milan-based Andrea Caputo Studio & Salomée Faeh. Their vision brought clean lines, concrete tones, and understated sophistication to the forefront—balancing functionality with visual depth. A branded carpet by AC Studio and a handmade Carhartt logo designed by German artist Pietro Sanguinetti added subtle layers of identity, elevating the store beyond retail and into a space that reflects the brand's global point of view.
To mark the opening, Carhartt WIP launched an exclusive capsule that sold out fast. Featuring the iconic Detroit Jacket and two short-sleeved tees inspired by the traditional Wau Johor kite, the collection anchored the brand to its Malaysian setting in a thoughtful and localized way. Visitors were also treated to 'MERAK-07,' a site-specific lighting installation by local artist Jun Ong. His work reinterpreted the Wau through a futuristic lens—using light and material interplay to bridge tradition and innovation.
This latest chapter in Carhartt WIP's expansion speaks to its long-standing ability to straddle local cultures and global subcultures. Since its founding in 1994, the brand has adapted the workwear DNA of its American predecessor into something altogether new—an aesthetic informed as much by hip-hop, skateboarding, and techno as it is by function-first design.
As of June, the Johor Bahru store has already become more a creative hub—a space that connects community, craft, and culture in equal parts. It's clear that Carhartt WIP continues to build spaces that resonate far beyond the sales floor.

South Korea's dental tech firm Medit sued in U.S. federal court

June 27 (UPI) -- South Korea's three-dimensional dental scanner maker Medit is facing a lawsuit filed by an Israeli company in a U.S. federal court for alleged patent violations. According to court documents filed this month in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Densys accused Medit of infringing on two of its core U.S. patents related to intraoral scanning. The lawsuit alleges that Medit's line of scanners and associated software incorporate patented technology of Densys without authorization. "Medit knowingly developed, has sold, sells, and offers to sell the accused product(s) in an infringing manner that was known to Medit or was so obvious that it should have been known to Medit," Densys claimed in the complaint. Seeking a jury trial, Densys is demanding damages, an injunction, and enhanced penalties for what it argues is willful infringement. Founded in 2000, Densys is a dental technology company. It specializes in intraoral 3D scanning systems, which are used to create real-time digital impressions of a patient's mouth. MBK Partners, one of the largest private equity companies in Asia, channeled $1.8 billion in early 2023 to purchase Medit, the world's third-largest 3D dental scanner manufacturer. Thereafter, Medit struggled in both the top and bottom lines. The Seoul-based corporation logged $203 million in turnover in 2022, up 44.07% from the previous year, for $84 million in net profit, up 38.18% year-on-year. Under the ownership of MBK, however, its sales more than halved to $93 million in 2023 and the firm turned to a loss of $20 million. In 2024, Medit recorded sales of $105 million and netted a deficit of $17 million. Comments from Medit were not available. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Spain makes Booking.com scrap 4,000 tourist rental ads

Online hotel booking giant on Friday said it had taken down thousands of advertisements in Spain in the leftist government's latest crackdown on illegal short-term tourist rentals. A tourism boom has driven the buoyant Spanish economy but fuelled local concern about increasingly scarce and unaffordable housing, a top priority for the minority coalition government. "We have deleted a very small number of adverts in Spain at the request of the consumer ministry for supplying valid licences," said in a statement. The Amsterdam-based platform said the non-compliant adverts represented "less than two percent" of its 200,000 properties in Spain and that it had always collaborated with the authorities to regulate the short-term rental sector. The consumer rights ministry on Thursday announced had scrapped 4,093 illegal ads, most of them located in the Atlantic Ocean's Canary Islands, a top tourist destination. Spain has also ordered online tourist accommodation giant Airbnb to take down more than 65,000 adverts for violating licence rules and has been in a legal battle with the US-based company. The world's second most-visited country hosted a record 94 million foreign tourists in 2024, but residents of hotspots such as Barcelona blame short-term rentals for the housing crisis and changing their neighbourhoods. "We're making progress in the fight against a speculative model that expels people from their neighbourhoods and violates the right to a home," far-left consumer rights minister Pablo Bustinduy wrote on social network Bluesky. al/imm/lth Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
