Carhartt WIP Lands in Johor Bahru with a Bold, Culture-Driven Space

Hypebeast27-06-2025
Carhartt WIPhas officially opened the doors to its third Malaysian location, this time in the thriving southern city of Johor Bahru. Located on the ground floor of The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, the 1,819-square-foot store quietly made its debut. The new space quickly became a magnet for design fans and streetwear loyalists alike, offering a seamless blend of rugged workwear heritage and contemporary industrial aesthetic.
The store was designed by Milan-based Andrea Caputo Studio & Salomée Faeh. Their vision brought clean lines, concrete tones, and understated sophistication to the forefront—balancing functionality with visual depth. A branded carpet by AC Studio and a handmade Carhartt logo designed by German artist Pietro Sanguinetti added subtle layers of identity, elevating the store beyond retail and into a space that reflects the brand's global point of view.
To mark the opening, Carhartt WIP launched an exclusive capsule that sold out fast. Featuring the iconic Detroit Jacket and two short-sleeved tees inspired by the traditional Wau Johor kite, the collection anchored the brand to its Malaysian setting in a thoughtful and localized way. Visitors were also treated to 'MERAK-07,' a site-specific lighting installation by local artist Jun Ong. His work reinterpreted the Wau through a futuristic lens—using light and material interplay to bridge tradition and innovation.
This latest chapter in Carhartt WIP's expansion speaks to its long-standing ability to straddle local cultures and global subcultures. Since its founding in 1994, the brand has adapted the workwear DNA of its American predecessor into something altogether new—an aesthetic informed as much by hip-hop, skateboarding, and techno as it is by function-first design.
As of June, the Johor Bahru store has already become more a creative hub—a space that connects community, craft, and culture in equal parts. It's clear that Carhartt WIP continues to build spaces that resonate far beyond the sales floor.

Modi's tax overhaul to strain finances but boost image amid US trade tensions

By Nikunj Ohri, Aftab Ahmed and Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's deepest tax cuts in eight years will strain government revenues but are winning praise from businesses and political pundits who say they will bolster his image in an ongoing trade fight with Washington. In the biggest tax overhaul since 2017, Modi's government on Saturday announced sweeping changes to the complex goods and services tax (GST) regime which will make daily essentials and electronics cheaper from October, helping consumers and also companies like Nestle, Samsung and LG Electronics. At the same time, in his Independence Day speech on Friday, Modi urged Indians to use more goods made domestically, echoing calls from many of his supporters to boycott U.S. products after Donald Trump hiked tariffs on imports from India to 50% as of August 27. The tax cut plan comes with costs given GST is a major revenue generator. IDFC First Bank says the cuts will boost India's GDP by 0.6 percentage points over 12 months but will cost the state and federal government $20 billion annually. But it will improve weak stock market sentiment and bring political dividends for Modi ahead of a critical state election in the eastern state of Bihar, said Rasheed Kidwai, a fellow at New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation. "GST reduction will impact everyone, unlike cuts to income tax, which is paid by only 3%-4% of the population. Modi is doing this as he is under a lot of pressure due to U.S. policies," said Kidwai. "The move will also help the stock market, which is now politically important as it has a lot of retail investors." India launched the major tax system in 2017 that subsumed local state taxes into the new, nationwide GST to unify its economy for the first time. But the biggest tax reform since India's independence faced criticism for its complex design that taxes products and services under four slabs - 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18% but the salted category at 5%, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's complexities. Under the new system, India will abolish the 28% slab - which includes cars and electronics - and move nearly all of the items under the 12% category to the lower 5% slab, benefitting many more consumer items and packaged foods. Government data shows the 28% and 12% tax slabs together garner 16% of India's annual GST revenue of roughly $250 billion last fiscal year. 'A BRIGHTER GIFT' AND POLITICS Bihar is a key state politically and goes to the polls by November. A recent survey by the VoteVibe agency showed Modi's opposition has an edge largely because of a lack of jobs. "Any tax cut has wide public appreciation. But of course, the timing is purely determined by political exigencies," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of Indian public relations firm Perfect Relations. "It seems to be an indication of some mixture of frustration as well as recognition that there is a broad public pushback against high and crippling rates of taxation." Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has seized on his tax announcement, posting on X that on the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, "a brighter gift of simpler taxes and more savings is waiting for every Indian." Modi has vowed to protect farmers, fishermen and cattlemen, following Trump's surprise tariff announcement on India, after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. The latest round of trade talks between the two nations set for August 25-29 has also been called off. Aldi reveals ‘small details' that make shop cheaper than Coles, Woolworths

German discount giant Aldi has been growing in popularity amongst Australian shoppers and has been heralded as a cheaper alternative to the major players Coles and Woolworths. Now, the supermarket has revealed the small details that allow it to get the edge on competitors. Aldi was recently crowned Australia's best supermarket by shoppers in Canstar Blue's annual Supermarket Satisfaction Ratings for the eighth year in a row. It's also consistently beaten out Coles and Woolworths in CHOICE's government-funding shopping basket price comparison. Aldi Australia group director Simon Padovani-Ginies told Yahoo Finance the supermarket 'won't be beaten on the cost of your weekly shop'. He said the store's lower prices were achieved through 'fine-tuning even the smallest of details'. RELATED Costco reveals new Aussie warehouse as it competes with Coles, Woolworths Centrelink reveals 'common misconception' about $1,732 pension payment Major retirement mistake millions of Aussies are making So what does Aldi do differently from the big supermarkets? The supermarket revealed it starts the moment customers walk in the door. 'To grab a trolley, you pop in a gold coin or one of our famous trolley tokens,' an Aldi spokesperson said. 'This simple system encourages shoppers to return their trolleys so fewer replacements are needed and the team spend less time collecting them.' Woolworths and Coles also install coin locks on trolleys for a variety of reasons, including council requirements, but these are reviewed on a case-by-case basis rather than being applied across the inside, Aldi said the stores themselves had been set up to help keep its prices low. 'Every store is designed around the same familiar layout – about half the size of other supermarkets. That means lower overheads and a smoother shopping experience,' the spokesperson told Yahoo Finance. Woolworths and Coles, for instance, offer between 20,000 and 25,000 products, while Aldi Australia has just 1,800 items that customers can choose from. 'You'll also notice clever touches like digital price tags, oversized barcodes that make checkout faster, and packing benches so you can bag your groceries your way,' the spokesperson said. 'By sticking to this streamlined approach, ALDI can keep offering top-quality products at the lowest possible prices – delivering exceptional value to customers every day.' Aldi national buying managing director Jordan Lack previously told the ACCC's supermarket inquiry the supermarket also does not employ as many people as Coles and Woolies. They also don't operate in Tasmania or the Northern Territory, or offer online shopping for customers. The German chain also notably doesn't play music at its stores, which APRA AMCOS estimated could be saving it around $230 to $1,600 per year per supermarket. New shopping trends emerge as cost-of-living pressures continue Canstar Blue research found grocery spending had increased to $240 per week for the average household of four, up 11 per cent compared to the previous year. Shopping around and visiting more than one supermarket is now becoming increasingly common, with 61 per cent of shoppers visiting two or more stores each week to complete their shop. Canstar Blue spokesperson Eden Radford told Yahoo Finance shoppers were paying more attention to their spending to combat higher costs at the register. 'More than 80 per cent have changed how they shop, whether by looking at unit prices, buying marked-down products, choosing in-season fruit and vegetables, or swapping to frozen instead,' she said. The survey of 2,800 people found consistently low prices was the most important thing most shoppers wanted, across all products, not just specials. CHOICE's most recent price comparison found a 25 per cent difference between Aldi and IGA for the same 14 item basket of goods, and a smaller 6 and 7 per cent difference beetween Aldi and Woolworths and Coles respectively. Coles and Woolworths control about 67 per cent of the Australian grocery market, while Aldi has about 9 per cent and Metcash 7 per cent.

Ringgit set for strong rally to one-year high as foreign investment surges to record levels

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — The ringgit is expected to resume its rally and potentially reach its strongest level against the US dollar in nearly a year, according to analysts who cite dovish central bank policies and fiscal commitments as key drivers. Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. predicts the ringgit will strengthen to 4.15 per dollar in the fourth quarter due to anticipated central bank easing, while Malayan Banking Bhd. Forecasts 4.10 by December, Bloomberg reported. MUFG Bank Ltd. Expects a 1.5 per cent gain from current levels, attributing this to improved export competitiveness following a US tariff deal with Malaysia. The ringgit's recovery from its April low has recently stalled, but upcoming inflation data could revive expectations for Bank Negara Malaysia rate cuts and stimulate bond inflows. Global funds invested a record US$4.3 billion into Malaysian bonds in the second quarter, anticipating rate cuts from Southeast Asia's last holdout central bank, which delivered a 25-basis-point reduction in July. Christopher Wong of OCBC said that a stronger ringgit depends on sustained foreign inflows and the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation, with his bank projecting another rate cut this year. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an ambitious five-year growth plan through 2030, including a one-time RM2.8 billion stimulus package featuring cash handouts and reduced fuel prices. The government has simultaneously pursued fiscal discipline through measures such as cutting diesel subsidies and expanding the sales and service tax. Matthew Ryan of Ebury Partners warns that prolonged trade uncertainty and potential higher tariffs could moderately impact Malaysia's economy and trigger a more pronounced ringgit selloff. The ringgit closed at 4.2120 on Friday, with MUFG's Lloyd Chan pointing out government-led structural reforms aimed at boosting productivity and fiscal discipline as foundational factors for the currency's strength.
