Coca-Cola attempts to hold itself accountable with latest sustainability project: 'A powerful step'

The Coca-Cola Foundation partnered with the United Nations Development Programme to address the plastic waste problem in Asia.
Urgent solutions to single-use plastic waste are needed across the continent due to increasing demand, rapid urbanization, and insufficient waste management programs.
As The CSR Universe reported, Coca-Cola has committed to increasing plastic waste efforts in nine countries. It provided a $15 million grant to support the United Nations' plastic waste management efforts in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Maldives, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
The collaboration aims to reduce and eliminate disposable plastic in these countries and improve the livelihoods of waste management workers.
The effort involves promoting recycling, reducing plastic leakage into the environment, and inspiring policy changes through community-level action. It will also work to incorporate new plastic waste technology into waste management plans to improve collection, recycling, and leakage.
This plastic waste collaboration is significant because it goes beyond just cleaning plastic up in Asian communities. It aims to combat the problem by focusing on the circular economy and changing development models to reduce plastic pollution.
"Through our collaboration with UNDP, the foundation aims to advance solutions that minimise packaging waste, support better collection methods, and enhance processing capabilities," said Carlos Pagoaga, president of the Coca-Cola Foundation. "This approach not only helps address plastic waste more effectively but also contributes to long-term improvements in local communities and the broader environment."
In recent years, Coca-Cola has been making strides toward sustainability, including upgrading its delivery fleet to include electric trucks. The company has also launched initiatives to increase the amount of recycled plastic in its bottles and supported drone-based plastic waste cleanup projects in waterways.

Mexico to Propose Joint Steel Committee With US to Bolster Ties

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico will propose reinstating a North American steel committee to improve trade ties with the US and reduce reliance on Asian steel imports, according to a top trade official. Why New York City Has a Fleet of New EVs From a Dead Carmaker Chicago Schools Seeks $1 Billion of Short-Term Debt as Cash Gone A Photographer's Pipe Dream: Capturing New York's Vast Water System A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome Trump Takes Second Swing at Cutting Housing Assistance for Immigrants As part of its negotiations with the US over steel tariffs, Mexico plans to float the idea of bringing back a committee comprising steel companies in both Mexico and the US, as well as government trade officials from both nations, said Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez Romano, Mexico's deputy economy minister for trade. While negotiations have focused on the bilateral relationship, the committee proposal envisions including Canada down the line. The committee would be similar to the former North American Steel Trade Committee under NAFTA, the trade agreement prior to the current USMCA between Mexico, the US and Canada. It would be tasked with building a stronger regional ecosystem including private sector actors rather than relying solely on government negotiations, said Gutiérrez. For example, the committee would consider measures aimed at increasing Mexico's purchase of US steel to replace Asian imports. The move would potentially enable Mexico to increase tariffs on imported Asian steel, said Gutiérrez, who's seen as Mexico's second-most important commerce negotiator. 'It's something that the United States views very favorably and we view very favorably, because we have to work hand in hand,' he said. 'We are looking at a series of trade practices to strengthen ourselves as a region, to protect ourselves as a region and to work together on a common policy that strengthens our industries.' To address US concerns, in addition to the joint committee proposal, Mexico has closed 1,062 so-called 'phantom' Asian steel mills, which are buildings that are registered as mills but don't contain any actual steel operations and function as cover for foreign imports. About 40% were linked to China, 10% to India and 6% to Iran. The government is also exploring domestic policies to increase local steel consumption, said Gutiérrez, such as having Mexico's construction industry commit to buying local steel to offset a potential 5% to 10% drop in exports to the US. The proposals come amid negotiations between Mexico and the US over its tariff policies, including crippling 50% tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminum. The measures have forced some steel producers to pause planned investments, such as the cancellation of a $600 million special steel mill proposed by Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau SA. Gerdau Drops Mexican Steel Mill Plan Amid Trump Tariff Turmoil Gutiérrez said that Mexico is prioritizing negotiating a deal to reduce tariffs for autos, steel and aluminum. Whether planned steel investment is withdrawn or even increased will depend entirely on the final terms of a possible steel agreement, he said. Investment 'could go elsewhere, but it could also double,' he said. 'This is an agenda that concerns us a lot, and we will not take our eye off the ball so that we can reduce the tariff.' Subaru tops customer satisfaction survey as Toyota falls, Stellantis brands occupy bottom

Subaru took the top spot, Toyota fell and a couple of U.S. brands moved up in the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index results focused on the automotive industry. The results of the closely watched survey, being released Tuesday, Aug. 19, show continued strength for Asian automakers but also have two General Motors brands, Buick and GMC, as well as Honda in the top six mass market brands following Mazda and Toyota, which were tied for second. Toyota held the top spot in 2024. Ford and Chevrolet were near the middle and Stellantis brands Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram occupied the bottom four of the 16 mass market slots, with Ram seeing the most significant decline from last year. Among luxury brands, Lexus moved ahead of Mercedes-Benz to take the top spot followed by Cadillac, Tesla and Acura. BMW was at the bottom. A spokesperson said not enough responses referenced Lincoln, Porsche and Infiniti in order for them to be included in the results. Subaru has enjoyed strong sales growth in recent years and could continue that in 2025 with offerings such as a redesigned Forester, the option for a more powerful Crosstrek engine, and new trim options for the Ascent and Outback.' The study noted that 'Lexus is finding success with hybrid customers who report a large increase in satisfaction this year,' even as satisfaction with hybrids overall has dropped. The results of the study are based on 9,949 completed surveys of randomly selected customers contacted via email between July 2024 and June 2025, according to a copy provided to the Free Press. The study is produced in Ann Arbor. 'Going forward, both segments may be challenged by rising monthly payments and possible changes in quality expectations as loan lengths increase. For example, some customers may still be making new vehicle payments for cars that are six or more years old,' the study said. Contact Eric D. Lawrence: elawrence@ Become a subscriber.
