Caleb Williams Watch: How Bears QB performed in joint practice with Bills

The Chicago Bears continued training camp on Thursday with their 18th practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from the joint practice with the Buffalo Bills -- including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams is entering his second season following a rocky rookie year that included two head coaches, three offensive coordinators, being sacked a league-high 68 times, a 10-game losing streak and a 5-12 record. But the Bears prioritized Williams' development this offseason with the hiring of offensive guru Ben Johnson as head coach, overhauling the interior offensive line and adding even more weapons to the mix. All eyes will be on Williams this summer as he continues to learn Johnson's offense and looks to find a rhythm heading into Year 2. We're taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the 18th practice of Bears training camp: The Good Williams got off to an impressive start in this joint practice, where several people in attendance noted he stacked some early completions during the 7-on-7 drill, where he continued to find his favorite targets in wide receivers Rome Odunze and Olamide Zaccheaus. Williams and Odunze's connection has been the talk of the last three practices, and that carried over into Friday's joint practice when Williams threw two touchdowns to Odunze during low red zone. According to DaWindyCity Productions, "Caleb has developed really strong chemistry with Odunze this camp." But his connection with OZ has also thrived, which included a 45-yard touchdown from Williams that the wideout took to the end zone. The Bad Williams had an overall solid practice, but it was the offense as a whole that had some late struggles. The Bears offense struggled during the two-minute drill, where Williams was pressured a few times (more on that below). But it was the move-the-ball drill that was the offense's downfall. The overall offensive operation was in flux against the Bills, where Chicago's first-team offense totaled six false starts, per Zack Pearson, including back-to-back penalties at the start of the move-the-ball period. Per Pearson, "that's been a glaring issue all throughout training camp, and I can't say with confidence that it will be fixed anytime soon." The Noteworthy Williams faced a significant amount of pressure from the Bills during Friday's practice, which forced the second-year QB to scramble, per Zack Pearson, noting "Joey Bosa and Greg Rousseau each got into the backfield more often than they should have, bringing the pressure." But the "low point" came during the move the ball drill, where after Williams connected with Olamide Zaccheaus on a 45-yard touchdown, the Bears gave up back-to-back sacks including "Braxton Jones being driven back into Williams." There are legitimate concerns about the left tackle position during an offseason where the Bears overhauled the interior offensive line. Right now, Chicago has four guys vying for the job in Braxton Jones, Ozzy Trapilo, Theo Benedet and Kiran Amegadjie. But you know the saying -- when you have four left tackles, that means you have none. Bears QB Caleb Williams taking responsibility to limit sacks

In his rookie season, Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears took a league-high 68 sacks, the most in franchise history, and a telling sign of a poor season for everyone involved. The Bears prioritized the offensive line this offseason, bringing in three new starting offensive linemen in veteran guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, as well as signing free-agent center Drew Dalman to help fix the interior of the line. While the offensive line was a big part of Williams being sacked a franchise-record 68 times, not all the blame falls on the line. Williams took responsibility and blame for his play that allowed some of those sacks, and he understands needing to improve his own play. Williams recently discussed where he'll have to develop his game and do better at not allowing opposing defenses to get sacks on him. "Part of it is my footwork and that lining up with the play," Williams said. "That helps accelerate the clock for me. The other part is being decisive, making a decision. The other part is also taking what the defense gives me. Not trying to find that big play every time and be the young cat wanting to go get that big play, big scramble play. Sometimes it's just the check down of the ball, the flat, the second read that may not be something more than five yards." While having to learn a new offense, Williams is showing understanding and acknowledgement of areas that are open for improvement in his game. If he can work with new head coach Ben Johnson to fix his timing and decision making, along with the offensive line relationship, there should be a decrease in the amount of sacks allowed on the young Bears quarterback in Year 2.
