Ronnie O'Sullivan ‘hasn't given up on Hong Kong', immigration chief says

Snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan, who obtained Hong Kong residency last year through a talent scheme, 'has not given up' on the city, the immigration chief has said, despite the newlywed seven-time world champion recently revealing plans to move to the Middle East.
Asked about O'Sullivan's intentions after he confirmed two days ago that he had married actress Laila Rouass, Director of Immigration Benson Kwok Joon-fung said on Sunday that he had been in touch with him and had stressed that Hong Kong's door was still open to him.
'As far as I understand, a lot has been happening for him in the past few months, and it's hard to say if his immigration plans will change,' Kwok said.
'However, he also hasn't given up on Hong Kong. From what I know, he is expected to come to Hong Kong next month to attend the opening ceremony of his snooker club here.
'He really likes Hong Kong, so if there are things here that can entice him to stay, he might just choose Hong Kong as his place of residence.'

British media reported the 49-year-old snooker star was selling his £2 million house in Essex and planned to head off to the United Arab Emirates with his new wife.

Harry Bentley looking forward to plum ride on ‘very competitive' Lo Rider at Sha Tin

The 33-year-old is hoping a drop in distance will be a masterstroke by Caspar Fownes Harry Bentley is relishing the chance to get on board the unexposed Lo Rider in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Tuesday as he looks to end the season on a high. The Harzand galloper was last seen running a massive race to finish fourth in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) back in March, defying odds of $19. Ridden that day by Hugh Bowman, he set out to make all the running and only begrudgingly gave up the lead at the 200m pole, ultimately finishing less than two lengths behind Cap Ferrat. While he is yet to break through from six starts in Hong Kong, Lo Rider was a two-time winner in Ireland when known as Sharinay and went close to a win when a neck second to Steps Ahead at Sha Tin in February. HISTORY AT SHA TIN! 👏👏@CWilliamsJockey wins the 148th @BMW Hong Kong Derby aboard Cap Ferrat for trainer Francis Lui over a fast-closing My Wish... #4YOSeries | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 23, 2025 The four-year-old has been absent since his Derby run, but he trialled well on the Sha Tin all-weather surface two weeks ago and Bentley thinks a drop in trip by trainer Caspar Fownes could be the key to a first local success. 'He's a good ride to have picked up, there's no question about that,' said Bentley. 'I think he's in this class as well. Obviously he's dropping in trip, which is something to consider. 'But he's definitely a great ride to have picked up from Caspar and looks to be a very competitive runner. 'Having not had any experience on the horse up until this point, I can't hand on heart say whether he'll love the drop in distance. Clearly Caspar thinks it's the right option and I totally trust his judgment. 'He's a really solid horse bringing good form into the race and he has a light weight too – he has to be considered.' Bentley has six rides on Tuesday's programme, including a pair of debutants, but he is particularly hopeful in the chances of Happy Universe in the Class Four Riding High Together Handicap (1,600m). The Jimmy Ting Koon-ho-trained five-year-old was a dual winner in New Zealand but is yet to add to his tally in Hong Kong, though it is not through a lack of trying. The Zacinto galloper has finished second on two occasions, most recently over Tuesday's course and distance back in April where he was only beaten a length. 'He's been a horse that's been a bit unlucky. Last time he didn't get drawn overly well but he's a consistent runner,' said Bentley. Bright Inheritance gets his second win! Dennis Yip's Star Witness galloper is the recipient of a superb @LukeFerraris drive... 🙌#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 20, 2025 'I think the draw [gate two] is a massive plus this time and he can get into a nice position and run another solid race.' British-born Bentley is in his fourth full season in Hong Kong and sits on the 30-winner mark for the campaign. Matching his career-best haul of 39 winners is a bridge too far this campaign, but the 33-year-old is satisfied with another solid season that he hopes he can end on a successful note. 'Obviously you're always striving for more but I'm happy enough to get 30 winners up,' said Bentley. 'I'll just keep getting my head down and hopefully add to that tally before the season is up.'

Priscilla Cheung chasing city record and Hong Kong glory as Games debut nears

Priscilla Cheung will compete for the city at the World University Games next month, and should also be part of National Games squad A year of preparation has paid off for high jumper Priscilla Cheung Ching-lam, who can look forward to representing Hong Kong in two big events over the next few months. With a World University Games debut less than a month away, the two-time Hong Kong champion should also make the cut for the city's National Games squad after leaping a personal best of 1.81 metres in Singapore in April. Cheung actually graduated from Polytechnic University last October, but a rule allows for students to compete the following year, hence her presence in Germany. 'I didn't make it in Chengdu in 2023, so this is my first and last World University Games,' Cheung, who majored in hotel management, said. Cheung has attempted to raise the bar several times since her personal best, which is just below the 1.88m city record, set by Cecilia Yeung Man-wai in Taipei in 2017. Priscilla Cheung just couldn't improve on her personal best during the Hong Kong Athletics Series at Wan Chai Sports Ground. Photo: Edmond So The 25-year-old took three goes at clearing 1.82m at the Hong Kong Athletics Series this weekend, and although she could not make it, a successful attempt at 1.76m was enough for her to win at Wan Chai Sports Ground. 'Since the end of last season, the World University Games and the National Games were on my radar,' Cheung said. 'These are my targets and the first few months this year was to try to get good results. Newsletter Daily Coffee and Sports By submitting, you consent to receiving marketing emails from SCMP. 'The standard of the Games in Germany will be very high and I haven't competed at the world's level before, so, it will be more like feeling the atmosphere for me. 'It would be great if I could withstand the pressure of a big competition and achieve my personal best. I am looking at the 1.85m mark for now.' Cheung, alongside Chung Wai-yan, who has cleared 1.80m twice in recent months, are both expected to compete in the Games in November. Hong Kong's status as co-hosts, alongside Guangdong and Macau, means the city can send up to three athletes and one relay team in each event without meeting the qualifying standards, which for women's high jump is 1.90m. Still, Cheung is looking forward to her third National Games, after competing in Tianjin in 2017 and Xi'an four years ago. She finished 18th on both occasions, after recording jumps of 1.70m. 'We as athletes always want to express ourselves and get better results, especially on the bigger stages,' she said. 'Now that I have so many opportunities, I will try to do my best in every competition. 'It's not only the National Games, but the next Asian Championships and other tournaments in the region as well, I want to do better with every jump.' She has had some help, not only from her coach Wan Tat-yung, but Yeung too. The record holder has been made an assistant coach at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. 'She has been advising me for a while, and she's helping me a lot with her new role now,' Cheung said. 'It's not only the psychological aspect but also her tournament experience. 'She told me not to get overexcited even if I am in good condition, she could tell me when to take a step back or go all in. 'She also brought back a lot of training drills [from Australia] so that I could have different training even though I was always in Hong Kong.'
