Charles Oliveira: Ilia Topuria 'is going to fold in front of me' at UFC 317

USA Today6 hours ago

LAS VEGAS – Charles Oliveira is planning to offer a reminder to anyone underestimating him against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317.
Former titleholder Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) has the chance to become the first two-time lightweight titleholder in company history when he meets Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant belt left behind by Islam Makhachev in Saturday's headliner at T-Mobile Arena (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
With nearly 15 years in the promotion and 34 octagon appearances under his belt, Oliveira said his biggest driving force at this point is to elevate his resume. Turning back heavily hyped former featherweight champ Topuria, who enters undefeated, would be a massive addition.
"(I'm a) guy that continues to stay thirsty, that is always for the win," Oliveira told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at Wednesday's UFC 317 media day. "This is for my legacy, for my history. I'm ready for this fight.
"He's younger, comes in undefeated, but does he want it more than I do? Does he have more hunger, more thirst than I have?"
Topuria has not been shy to declare his intentions for Oliveira at UFC 317. He is predicting a finish in the first two or three minutes of the fight and thinks Oliveira is simply going to crumble under his precision and pressure.
After such a decorated tenure in the sport that includes UFC records for finishes, submissions and bonuses, there's nothing Oliveira hasn't heard out of an opponent before. It all glides off him, but for anyone getting behind Topuria as the big favorite and potential next breakthrough star for the UFC, Oliveira warns that UFC 317 will end with sorrow and disappointment.
"Every fighter has different levels of things, different approaches to things," Oliveira said. "Ilia's just coming out there very young, very hungry. He's also undefeated. But there's a lot to prove still.
"In reality, everyone knows what's going to happen. He's another dude that's talking that's going to fold in front of me."

Adam Silver says NBA had AI, experts looking at Achilles injuries before Haliburton tear

The NBA is using artificial intelligence and has convened a panel of sports medicine experts to study the uptick of Achilles tears happening in the league, Commissioner Adam Silver said in an ESPN interview before the NBA Draft Wednesday night. The study of Achilles injuries in the league was already taking place when Tyrese Haliburton went down in Game 7 of the NBA Finals Sunday, Silver said. Before Haliburton, six other NBA players had suffered Achilles tears this season -- Pacers centers James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson, New Orleans guard Dejounte Murray and Miami guard Dru Smith in the regular season. Boston's Jayson Tatum and Milwaukee's Damian Lillard were injured in the playoffs. "So, we had seven this year. We had zero last year under the exact same circumstances, and the most we've ever had (previously) in a season is four," Silver said. "The NFL has had a rash of Achilles issues as well. So the purpose of convening those experts is to try to figure out what's going on." Re-live the Pacers unbelievable run to the NBA Finals in IndyStar's commemorative book The NBA is also using AI to study what's happened this season. "This is one area where AI, people are talking about how that's going to transform so many areas, the ability with AI to ingest all video (of) every game a player has played in to see if you can detect there's some pattern that we didn't realize that leads to an Achilles injury," Silver said, "whether it's associated with calf injuries, we really don't know. "But, we're taking it very seriously."

Michigan State PG Jeremy Fears Jr. referenced, spotted at NBA draft with brother Jeremiah

The 2025 NBA Draft is underway, and while many Michigan State basketball fans and players tuned in to watch star freshman Jase Richardson get selected, it was a different Spartan who was the first to show up on ESPN's coverage of the draft. When the New Orleans Pelicans selected Oklahoma star Jeremiah Fears with the No. 7 pick in the draft, the first person he turned to was his brother, Jeremy Fears Jr., the starting point guard for the Spartans. Then, ESPN showed a graphic about Jeremiah Fears referencing the fact that Jeremy started every game at Michigan State last season. You can see it below: That's a very cool moment for the Fears family and a nice mention for MSU basketball on a big stage. After the selection, Jeremy Fears took to social media to congratulate his brother: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan state news, notes, and opinion.
