SANDAKAN: The second edition of the Malaysia Palm Oil Expo (Mapex) 2025 in Sandakan has been hailed as a crucial platform for industry players to connect, exchange insights, and explore future growth opportunities in Sabah's palm oil and biomass sectors, said Sabah's Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, Datuk Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the event, Phoong emphasised that the palm oil industry is at a turning point, where numerous opportunities are emerging particularly in renewable energy and sustainable industry practices.

'It allows stakeholders to discuss pressing issues such as renewable energy, green practices, and certification processes, especially given the various challenges facing Sabah's palm oil sector,' he said. He urged industry players to tap into the potential of downstream activities and the development of the palm biomass sector in Sabah. 'I've just returned from Osaka, Japan, where I met several companies expressing serious interest in investing in Sabah's biomass industry. 'This reflects growing global confidence in our resources and long-term potential,' he added. Phoong also highlighted Sandakan's strategic location within the palm oil supply chain and called for greater investment, both local and international to accelerate economic development in the region. 'We want to attract major investors to Sabah, particularly to Sandakan. More investments mean more factories, more job opportunities, and overall economic growth. 'Events like Mapex are not only investment platforms but also an avenue to showcase Sandakan to the international market,' he said. He concluded by expressing hope that Mapex and similar events will continue to be held regularly to further boost Sabah's position as a leading hub for sustainable palm oil and biomass development. Mapex 2025 which held from 11 to 12 June at Hakka Hall brings together an international congregation of both upstream and downstream palm oil companies, along with their supporting industries to Sandakan. This expo highlights the latest developments and innovations in the palm oil sector, reflecting the significant role East Malaysia plays in the industry. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Call to speed up renewable energy development to meet zero carbon target
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 Text Size: Chan urged the State Government to invest in renewable energy infrastructure, including solar, hydro, wind and biomass sources. Kota Kinabalu: The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (Sabah Chapter) has called on the State Government to accelerate the development of renewable energy in line with Petronas' net zero carbon emissions goal by 2050. Its Chairman David Chan, said the foundation commended the company's long-term roadmap focused on clean energy, methane reduction and carbon capture, describing it as a benchmark for both public and private sectors in Malaysia. Advertisement 'As an oil and gas producing state, Sabah must not be left behind. Without a clear transition plan, we risk economic penalties, job losses and reduced competitiveness as global carbon pricing measures such as taxes and emission caps become the norm,' he said in a statement on Thursday. Chan urged the State Government to invest in renewable energy infrastructure, including solar, hydro, wind and biomass sources. He also called for greater support for electric vehicle adoption, cleaner public transportation and the development of green industrial zones built on low-carbon standards. 'We need greater investment in local research and development, as well as training in renewable energy technologies—especially among our youth and through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions,' Chan said. Citing China as an example, Chan noted that cities like Shenzhen and Shanghai have drastically reduced pollution levels and achieved widespread electric vehicle usage due to strong government intervention. He warned that without decisive action, Sabah could miss out on the economic and environmental benefits of a clean energy transition. 'Sabah must act now, not later. The people deserve a future powered by clean energy, green jobs and sustainable growth,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan's action is damaging: Phoong
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Phoong (left) criticised Chong's (right) approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe condemned Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong's police report against the RM31 billion Esteel steel project in Sipitang, calling it 'bizarre' and damaging to investor confidence. Chong, from Parti Warisan, lodged the report on Friday after claiming there was no visible progress at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), following a visit with Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong. Advertisement Phoong criticised Chong's approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. 'With that kind of attitude, it's no wonder why investors are hesitant to come to Sabah,' he said. He reaffirmed that the Esteel project is legitimate, vetted by federal agencies, and officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on May 30. Phoong added the project secured a Federal Manufacturing Licence in January, signed a gas supply deal with Sabah Energy and Petronas in February, and awarded a jetty construction contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) in May. Esteel, he said, paid RM35 million in deposit and signed a sublease agreement with Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation and construction is expected to begin by July or August. He said delays were attributed to a federal moratorium on new steel licences due to global oversupply but Esteel was the only project granted an exemption which reflected strong federal confidence. He warned that Chong's actions could scare away genuine investors. 'If you question the project, come to the State Assembly. Ask me directly, I am prepared to answer. But making a police report implies that the government or investor is lying. That is serious and completely uncalled for. 'No other state would treat an investor this way. Actions like this could set back Sabah's hard-won investment gains. We should not politicise investment matters. No industrial state in the country goes around lodging police reports against investors. 'Even in states like Kedah or Selangor, political battles stay in the legislature. Dragging a legitimate investor's name into a police investigation is not only unfair, but dangerous. It creates uncertainty,' Phoong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
