ESPN reporter drops bombshell in latest update on potential CFP changes
Strength of schedule, head-to-head results, conference championships and common opponents are some of the biggest criteria used to determine the participants of the 12-team College Football Playoff.
Could TV ratings soon become another criteria?
ESPN college football analyst Heather Dinich alluded to such a possibility in a new report (subscription required) Monday ahead of the annual spring meetings this week between FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua in Texas.
While no significant changes to the 12-team format will go into effect in 2025, it has seemed for months like a foregone conclusion that the CFP will expand to at least 14 teams in time for the 2026 season. As Dinich notes, changes to the 2026 CFP format must be in place before Dec. 1. Dinich also noted that there was both "private and public resistance to the idea of leagues having guaranteed spots to the postseason before the games are played."
As things currently stand, the CFP's four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded 1-4 and receive a first-round bye in the playoff. The SEC and Big Ten have been lobbying for a format that would guarantee their respective leagues four automatic berths in an expanded field, so it isn't surprising that there's been resistance to that from the ACC and Big 12.
But then this nugget from Dinich's report appeared:
"One possibility, which could be viewed as a compromise, is having conferences earn automatic bids through their play each season. A model in which each Power 4 league can earn guaranteed spots through a combination of its teams' overall records -- and maybe even TV ratings, according to a source -- could be presented. The highest-ranked conferences would earn the most automatic bids."
Highest-ranked? Or most-watched?
If TV ratings are taken into consideration, teams like Alabama would benefit greatly. The Crimson Tide always have a good overall record, even if their four losses last season were less than ideal in the first year following Nick Saban's retirement.
They're also high on the list of the most watched college football teams in any given year. So is Ohio State, Michigan, and the rest of the sport's blue bloods. Alabama was the third-most watched team in the 2024 regular season, according to Nielsen research.
Only the Georgia Bulldogs (8.6 million) and national champion Buckeyes (6.8 million) totaled more average viewers per game than Alabama's 6.6 million. The Texas Longhorns (6.4 million) and Tennessee Volunteers (5.4 million) were fourth and fifth, respectively, on the list of most-watched teams, per Nielsen's data.
Alabama has topped or been near the top of the list of most watched college football teams for years. Dating back to 2020 alone, Alabama was the most watched team that year and in 2023 (7.12 million). They were the third-most watched team in 2021 and 2022.
Aside from that, Dinich's report reiterates what's already known: the SEC and Big Ten are in the driver's seat in the next wave of postseason format changes -- and just about any other changes to the sport.

Former NFL QB Shuts Down Arch Manning Hype Train With Blunt Verdict

Former NFL QB Shuts Down Arch Manning Hype Train With Blunt Verdict originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Arch Manning hype train has been gaining steam all offseason, but ESPN analyst Jordan Rodgers is slamming on the brakes. Advertisement Rodgers, the younger brother of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and a mainstay on the SEC Network, didn't hold back when asked if Manning deserved to be called the top quarterback in the SEC heading into 2025. "That is fiction," Rodgers said bluntly while appearing on ESPN's "Get Up" in response to the question from Peter Schrager. "And y'all have been drinking Paul Finebaum's Kool-Aid for way too long." Rodgers was taking direct aim at recent takes — including one from Paul Finebaum — that have anointed Manning as potentially the best quarterback in the conference this season. After a redshirt year in 2023, followed by flashes of brilliance in limited action last fall, Manning has become one of the most talked-about players in college football. But Rodgers isn't buying into the buzz. Not even close. Advertisement "I have [Manning] as the fifth best. Let me repeat that. The fifth best quarterback in the SEC," Rodgers continued. "The hype train is out of control and what are we basing this on?" It's a fair question. Manning's most notable performances last season came against UTSA, Louisiana-Monroe and Mississippi State — teams that ranked 102nd, 93rd and 118th in scoring defense, respectively. "Look, I love Arch," Rodgers clarified. "I think he has a very high floor. But I don't think he's an elite talent when it comes to his arm, his arm ability, his ability to manipulate the pocket, to make guys miss, to change his arm angle." Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Rodgers did acknowledge Manning's upside, but he made it clear the Texas quarterback still has plenty to prove before being crowned anything in the SEC. "I think he's a really good quarterback, but the hype train's out of control." As Manning enters his first season as Texas' full-time starter, he'll have every opportunity to prove his doubters wrong. But if he stumbles, don't be surprised if Rodgers is the first one saying, 'I told you so.' Roman Reigns makes dramatic WWE return as CM Punk earns title shot at SummerSlam

Roman Reigns made his return to a WWE ring on "Monday Night Raw" as he helped thwart a post-match beatdown on CM Punk from Bronn Breaker and Bronson Reed. Punk pinned Breakker to earn a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship against Gunther at SummerSlam next month. However, as the bell sounded, Reed launched into an attack on Punk. Jey Uso tried to break it up, but he was met with a spear from Breakker. Reed was attempting to pile Uso on top of Punk and hit a "Tsunami" from the top rope, but Reigns' music hit. The crowd at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, nearly blew the lid off. Reigns marched down to the ring and immediately dispatched Reed and Breakker, sending them scurrying to the ramp with Paul Heyman shuffling behind them. The "Original Tribal Chief" hadn't been seen since his WrestleMania 41 defeat, when Heyman turned on Reigns and Seth Rollins hit him with a chair to secure the victory. Punk was also in the match, and he didn't exactly give Reigns a warm greeting when he showed up to fend off Breakker and Reed. There still appears to be a lot of hurt feelings between the two competitors. Regardless, Punk and Gunther will meet at SummerSlam, and Reigns' fate and business with Heyman, Reed and Breakker will be dealt with in the coming weeks. Rollins was not seen during the show. He appeared to suffer a leg injury during his match against LA Knight during "Saturday Night's Main Event." Heyman told Raw's Jackie Redmond that Rollins' health was irrelevant because he still has 11 months to cash in his Money in the Bank contract and could take all the time he needs to make an impact. Ohio State football 2025 fan poll: Share your opinions on the state of the Buckeyes

Ohio State experienced a roller coaster in 2024. Despite ending the regular season with an inexplicable fourth consecutive loss to rival Michigan, the Buckeyes recovered in the College Football Playoff. They tore through the expanded 12-team bracket to capture their first national championship under coach Ryan Day. Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day leads warm ups prior to the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against the Oregon Ducks at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on Jan. 1, 2025. While more than half of their starters departed and both coordinators have gone on to other jobs, expectations remain high. Advertisement Day has a roster that is headlined by two of the best players in the sport in wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs. It's likely that Ohio State will be ranked in the top five of the preseason polls and one of the top picks to win the Big Ten. The regular season has a handful of roadblocks, beginning with a visit from Texas on Aug. 30 and another potential top-five matchup at Ohio Stadium with Penn State on Nov. 1. Pressure is high to reverse the losing streak in The Game as well. How do you feel about the state of the program? We want to hear your views on the Buckeyes in The Dispatch's fan poll.
