Pandelela Rinong withdraws from world championships due to shoulder injury
The pair completed two of their five scheduled dives, scoring 87 points before pulling out during the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Pandelela revealed the injury, sustained earlier this month, flared up during warm-ups.
'After two dives, we decided to withdraw for safety reasons. I want to thank everyone, especially those who came to support us,' she posted on Facebook.
Earlier, Malaysian divers Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohamad Nazim and Yong Rui Jie missed the finals in the men's 3m synchronised springboard, finishing 21st out of 26 teams with 302.76 points.
In swimming, Khiew Hoe Yean failed to progress in the men's 200m freestyle, placing 31st overall with a time of 1:48.10. SEA Games champion Phee Jinq En also withdrew from the women's 100m breaststroke due to a hip and groin issue.
National swimming head coach Eric Anderson explained that Jinq En opted out to focus on the 50m breaststroke event on August 2. 'The team flew here straight from the World University Games in Berlin, which is hardly ideal,' he said. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: National tower run ace Soh Wai Ching is bent on conquering the world's second-tallest tower, the Merdeka 118, in under 16 minutes at the inaugural The Sky Race on Aug 30. He is confident that competing on home ground and having had the opportunity to train climbing up Malaysia's tallest skyscraper several times would give him an added advantage. The 30-year-old admits that climbing the 2,845 steps, coupled with the unique structure of the Merdeka 118 building, is something he has never experienced before, making the ascent physically and mentally more challenging. 'The stairs at Merdeka 118 are unusual. I don't want to divulge too much information; let it be a surprise for the other competitors. 'But what I can say is that this is one of the most challenging climbs I've endured,' he told reporters after the official launch of The Sky Race at Merdeka Stadium here today. After this race, Wai Ching will switch his focus to try to win the race up the Shanghai Tower in China in November. He said the race up the world's third-tallest tower would be his best opportunity to wrest back the world number one ranking currently held by Japan's Ryoji Watanabe. Meanwhile, race director Jeffrey Ross said 4,100 participants from 31 countries have, so far, registered for The Sky Race. Ross, pleased with the overwhelming response, hopes they will reach their target of 5,000 participants before registration closes in 10 days. 'Overall, about 80 per cent of the participants are Malaysians... I can also confirm that most of the (world's) top 20 runners will be competing. Several Routes Temporarily Closed For IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2025 Run
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Several routes along the New Pantai Expressway (NEP) and Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA) will be temporarily closed from early Sunday morning for the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2025 run. Kuala Lumpur acting police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said an estimated 13,000 runners will compete in the seventh edition of the race, which will start and end in front of the Sunway Pyramid shopping centre. The Aug 3 race comprises four categories - 42.195 kilometres (km) full marathon; 21km half-marathon; 10km and 5km. He added that full marathon participants will race along both major expressways, beginning by heading towards Templer and Kuchai Lama before turning back to the starting point at Sunway Pyramid. "The affected routes on BESRAYA include Kuchai Lama, Sungai Besi, Salak Selatan, Plaza Tol Loke Yew, Jalan Istana, Jalan Cheras, Pandan Indah, Maluri, Jalan Pandan 1 and the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). "The affected routes on the NPE include the Kampung Pasir interchange, Pantai Sentral Park, Kuchai Maju, Sungai Besi and the Kuchai U-turn,' he said in a statement today. Mohamed Usuf Jan advised the public to plan their journey, use alternative routes and comply with instructions from police personnel on duty along the race route. "Police personnel and highway traffic staff will ensure smooth traffic flow and safety during the event. Any inconvenience caused is regretted, and the cooperation from all parties is appreciated,' he said. Meanwhile, according to the race website the 42km run is slated to begin at 3 am; the 21km run at 5 am; the 10km run at 5.30 am; and the 5km run at 6.50 am.

Sports commissioner receives Datukship for a lifetime of leadership

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's sports commissioner, Suhardi Alias, was today conferred the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) by the Penang governor, an award that carries the title 'Datuk.' The honour was presented in conjunction with the 84th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Ramli Ngah Talib. Suhardi described the award as a proud and deeply meaningful moment in his long public service career. 'I am truly honoured by this recognition,' former student of St Mark's School in Perai. 'This award isn't just for me. It's for all who work tirelessly to strengthen Malaysian sports. 'It motivates us to continue improving how we serve the public and support athletes.' Suhardi added that the award would act as a 'catalyst' for pushing reforms in governance and better administration across Malaysia's sports landscape. Suhardi's roots in Penang sports run deep. He played a key role during the 2001 SEA Games, where he served as the head of the Penang technical secretariat overseeing four events: bowling, squash, wushu, and judo. That year, Malaysia emerged overall champions for the first time with a historic 111 gold medals. He also worked closely with the Penang government and national sports council (NSC) to evaluate and improve the rating system for state and national sports bodies seeking administrative support. With nearly 35 years in the ministry of youth and sports, Suhardi has contributed to some of the country's most important sports frameworks. He helped craft the national sports vision 2030, the sports industry roadmap, and was behind the first national-level sports management and sports science courses, which he continues to teach. Suhardi also served as NSC deputy director-general (strategic) and was part of the NSC's rating committee with the Olympic Council of Malaysia in 2009. He also chaired the NSC anti-corruption committee and has been part of initiatives with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Interpol and the Olympic movement. Since being appointed Sports Commissioner in August 2023, Suhardi has overseen the expansion of recognised sports under the Sports Development Act 1997 from 39 to 103, covering traditional, modern, and digital disciplines. 'We welcome new sports. They open doors for more youth to participate and excel. This is how we grow the industry and the ecosystem around it,' he said. Last year, Suhardi made headlines for speaking out against Malaysia hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, calling it 'financially risky.' Though his remarks drew internal scrutiny, many praised his honesty and called for more leaders like him in public service. Today's honour confirms what many in Malaysian sports already knew: Suhardi is a builder, a reformer, and a voice for responsible leadership.
