Magical Maharaj guides South Africa to big win over Australia

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj produced a career-best 5-33 to dismantle Australia and bowl South Africa to an emphatic 98-run victory in the opening one day international in Cairns on Tuesday. Home captain Mitchell Marsh made a defiant 88 but Australia, chasing 297 for victory, could never recover from the Maharaj-inflicted blows and were bundled out for 198 inside 41 overs. Put into bat, South Africa posted 296-8 after Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke and skipper Temba Bavuma produced half-centuries. Travis Head was pick of the Australia bowlers claiming 4-57 but Maharaja proved nearly unplayable when the hosts returned to bat. "I made my debut in 2016 in Australia. So it's a wonderful opportunity to get my first five-for here," Maharaj said after collecting the player of the match award. "I just tried to utilise the condition. The wicket was a little bit sticky with the new ball. I just tried to utilise that and got the reward." South Africa got off to a strong start after Markram (82) added 92 runs for the opening stand with Ryan Rickelton, who made 33. Rickelton got an lbw decision against him reversed but was dismissed by Head, while Markram fell near the halfway stage of their innings. Bavuma (65) and Breetzke (57) combined in a 92-run stand, though South Africa fell short of the 300-mark. When Australia began their chase, Head hit Nandre Burger for five fours in an over as the hosts reached the 50-mark in five overs. South Africa struck back with spin and once Prenelan Subrayen dismissed Head, Maharaj turned the game on its head claiming five wickets in 26 deliveries. Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey were trapped lbw, Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie had their off-stumps knocked back while Josh Inglis had his defence breached as Australia slumped to 89-6. With wickets tumbling at the other end, Marsh, who hit 10 fours, had to temper his natural aggression. Ben Dwarshuis contributed 33 down the order but it was of little significance. The teams move to Mackay for the second ODI of the three-match series on Friday. Australia prevailed 2-1 in the preceding T20 series between the sides.

Thumping win for Karmine Corp in Esports World Cup

Karmine Corp secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Geekay Esports to cement the roster's pedigree within Rocket League in the ongoing Esports World Cup. Karmine Corp had an unbeaten run at EWC 25, ending in a near-perfect grand final showing. Until the fourth game of the grand final, they had not even conceded a goal. However, Geekay Esports would take that game to stop Karmine Corp from securing a perfect sweep. The tournament, a major event on the Rocket League calendar, brought 16 top teams to Riyadh to compete for a $1,000,000 prize pool, with Karmine Corp claiming $400,000 for their victory. Their performance showcased why they're currently considered the most feared team in Rocket League, with strong showings in the group stage, an impressive win over Team Falcons – the only other LAN winners in 2025 – in the semifinals, and a commanding victory in the grand final against Geekay Esports. Meanwhile, Twisted Minds took home the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS title after emerging victorious in one of the most nail-biting finals ever. Having been knocked out in the group stage at EWC 24, the club's performance at EWC 25 more than made up for their disappointing run last year. Despite their underwhelming performance at EWC 24, they ended 2024 on a high with back-to-back PUBG Global Series Finals wins. In Teamfight Tactics, it was Weibo Gaming from China who secured the title. They had a tough run, and although not the favourites from the outset, they quickly became one of the standout teams as the event progressed. Their grand final opponents, built a reputation as giant slayers, knocking out both EWC 24 grand final sides on their way to face Weibo Gaming. Ultimately, Weibo Gaming were able to maintain their unbeaten run all the way to the trophy lift. While gave them a hard time, Weibo Gaming were able to keep their composure, and despite a major win in match two of the series by they secured a 3-1 victory to claim the title. DN Freecs' Lim "Ulsan" Soo-hoon was once again victorious in TEKKEN 8. After last year's win, there were high expectations for what Ulsan could do when he took to the stage this year. Despite an early group stage loss to Kim "Kkokkoma" Mu-jong during phase two, Ulsan was able to climb out of the lower bracket and dominate from that point onwards – even managing to get revenge on Kkokkoma to knock him out of the competition. With his grand final victory over Yoon "LowHigh" Sun-woong, Ulsan won back-to-back EWC TEKKEN 8 titles, etching his name into the history books. Given his dominance, eyes will look to EWC 26, and if Ulsan can do it once more to become a three-time champion.

Nmecha penalty gets Leeds up and running on Premier League return

A late penalty from new signing Lukas Nmecha earned promoted Leeds United a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton in their first match back in the Premier League on Monday night. Leeds dominated the first half in front of a raucous Elland Road crowd, but wasted a host of chances to break the deadlock. Everton, on the other hand, did not muster a single shot, on or off target, in the opening period. The visitors brought on close season arrival Jack Grealish as they improved after the break, but James Tarkowski's handball gave the hosts the opportunity to snatch victory six minutes from time. Nmecha, a free transfer ahead of the new campaign, stepped off the bench to emphatically convert from the spot, ensuring Leeds, back in the top flight after a two-year absence, got their season off to the perfect start. "On field, it felt like a penalty in the moment, perhaps it was also a bit emotional with the roar of the stadium," Leeds boss Daniel Farke said. "Lukas' first two or three touches were not spot on -- I was a bit worried because normally he's an outstanding penalty taker. "I was overthinking if I should tell him today it's perhaps not the day to take a penalty. Thank God I didn't step in. He was ice cold and calm." For the past two seasons the three teams that have come up from the Championship have gone straight back down, but Monday's performance made Leeds look like a team that could buck the trend. Joel Piroe brought a fine early save out of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with the Dutch striker then twice going close to an opener in the first half as the away side toiled. It took until eight minutes into the second half for the visitors to manage a shot at goal, Idrissa Gueye hammering an effort well over the top. While Everton looked more of a threat after the arrival of 100 million pound forward Grealish, who is on loan from Manchester City, they still lacked a cutting edge. Leeds got the goal their efforts warranted, even if Everton felt aggrieved over the penalty decision. "It's not a penalty," Everton coach David Moyes said. "We didn't play well enough on the night, but the big frustration is the referees have actually had a bad opening weekend. I just don't know what the rules are supposed to be." Following Sunderland's win on Saturday, Leeds' success means that for the third time in Premier League history two promoted sides have won in the opening round of fixtures.
