Sen. Ron Johnson wants to hold a hearing on 'what actually happened on 9/11'
"There's an awful lot of questions," Johnson, the chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, said in an interview on conservative activist Benny Johnson's podcast on Monday.
'What actually happened on 9/11? What do we know? What is being covered up?' Johnson said of the 2001 attacks. "My guess is there's an awful lot being covered up in terms of what the American government knows about 9/11."
Asked if he planned on holding hearings, Johnson said, "I think so."
"There are a host of questions I will be asking," the senator said.
Asked for further details about Johnson's plans, a spokeswoman told NBC News Wednesday that a 'potential hearing will depend on what information/documentation is obtained by our office.'
Johnson's comments focused on a long - debunked claim about a building in the World Trade Center complex that collapsed hours after the Twin Towers were brought down by airliners.
The Wisconsin senator, who has a history of amplifying conspiracy theories, said in the interview that the investigation into the building that came down, Building 7, was 'corrupt' and suggested its collapse was the result of a 'controlled demolition.'
Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, sharply criticized Johnson's comments and urged the Wisconsin senator to 'stop peddling conspiracy theories.'
"Respectfully, Senator Johnson should stop peddling conspiracy theories about the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history and one that forever altered the lives of so many of my fellow New Yorkers," Lawler wrote in a post on X. "Crap like this dishonors and disrespects the innocent lives lost, our brave first responders, and all families and survivors who still carry the pain of 9/11 each and every day."
John Feal, a demolition supervisor at Ground Zero in New York and longtime advocate for first responders, called Johnson's remarks "silly and pathetic."
"If Ron Johnson really wants to know what happened on 9/11, I can meet with him," Feal told CNN in an interview Wednesday. "I'll let him know that innocent lives were lost on 9/11. Heroes died racing towards those innocent lives, and subsequently, 137,000 people are now sick because of the aftermath of 9/11."
Feal said he'll be in D.C. on Tuesday to advocate against the Trump administration's cuts to the World Trade Center Health Program, and said that's what Johnson should be questioning.

Trump says he wants to get to heaven but is at the bottom of the totem pole
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Donald Trump is trying his best to be a middleman for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Although talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin were fruitless, the US leader still has hope he can stop the bloodshed – and joked it could get him into heaven. Speaking to Fox and Friends, Trump said: 'If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that's pretty good. 'I want to try to get to heaven if possible. I'm hearing I'm not doing well. I'm really at the bottom of the totem pole. 'But if I get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.' He also referenced his 'intervention' to stop a potential war between India and Pakistan, saying he 'saved a lot of lives'. Trump added, 'They were going at it. Planes were being shot down. That was going to be maybe a nuclear war.' His remarks came after Trump said US troops would not be sent to help defend Ukraine against Russia. Trump added that Ukraine's hopes of joining NATO and regaining the Crimean Peninsula from Russia are 'impossible'. When asked by Fox & Friends what assurances he could provide going forward that American troops would not be part of defending Ukraine's border, Trump said: 'Well, you have my assurance, and I'm president.' But he would have no control over the US military after his term ends in January 2029. The president also said that he is optimistic that a deal can be reached to end the Russian invasion, but said Ukraine will not keep Crimea or join NATO. As for Putin, he's hoping for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as recognition of Crimea as Russian territory. After rambling about his path to heaven, Trump wrote on Truth Social about how museums throughout the nation's capital and all over the country are the 'last remaining segments of WOKE'. He's focusing his efforts on the Smithsonian. In a statement to NPR, the White House said: 'President Trump will explore all options and avenues to get the Woke out of the Smithsonian and hold them accountable. 'He will start with the Smithsonian and then go from there.' The White House previously said it plans to audit eight Smithsonian museums to 'ensure alignment with the President's directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.' Trump added: 'This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the 'HOTTEST' Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.' Talks of a potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky are also in the works, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Trump himself said that he was pressing for three-way talks among Zelensky, Putin and himself. More Trending But after speaking to Putin, Trump said that he was arranging first for a face-to-face between Zelensky and Putin and that three-way talks would follow if necessary. Zelensky and Putin last met in person in 2019, speaking about how to stop fighting in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops had been trying to take land since 2014. Then, the pair met in Paris, but the meeting didn't lead to any long-term peace in the regions. The stakes have never been higher after Russia illegally invaded Ukraine in February 2022, sparking a war which has killed more than 70,000 Ukrainian civilians. Brazen Russian soldiers who flew American flag into battle ‘are KILLED on frontline by Ukrainians' after sick taunt
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WARPED Russian soldiers who flew the American flag into battle as a sick taunt have been killed in action, according to reports. An armoured vehicle was filmed this week adorned with the flags of both Russia and the United States in the wake of Donald Trump's summit with Vladimir Putin. 8 Swaggering Putin troops flying the US and Russian flags Credit: East2West 8 Swaggering Putin troops flying the US and Russian flags 8 A firefighter works at the site of a fuel storage facility hit by a Russian drone strike Credit: Reuters 8 The mocking stunt appeared to suggest that the US is now helping Russia in its brutal invasion and occupation of swathes of Ukraine. But the twisted Russian troops weren't laughing for long. Military analysts have reported that the vehicle's crew have been killed in battle since it was filmed heading towards Zaporizhzhia. Blogger MilitaryNewsUA posted on X: "Russian channels write that the Russian crew of the Gaz-71, which had American and Russian flags installed on it, died during the assault on Ukrainian positions." It comes as Russia continues to sustain heavy casualties in its attempts to push further into Ukrainian territory. Russia's total casualties - meaning troops killed or wounded - in Ukraine exceeded one million back in June. The head of the Centre for the Study of the Occupation, Petr Andryushchenko, previously said: "The Russians have already declared the United States an ally and are storming Mala Tokmachka in M113 armoured personnel carriers….with Russian and American flags. "This is the logical conclusion to all of Trump's absurdity. "And all of this is on the official propaganda channel of Russia Today. There are no words." Vladimir Putin came out of the diplomatic deep freeze last Friday when he met with Donald Trump in Alaska for a peace summit. Ukrainian raid behind enemy lines kills 330 Russian troops While no ceasefire deal emerged following the meeting, Russia has spun the summit as a diplomatic win for the Kremlin after years of increased isolation. Trump told reporters: "There were many, many points that we agreed on, most of them, I would say. "A couple of big ones that we haven't quite gotten there, but we've made some headway." Fears have since grown in Western capitals that Trump may try to force Ukraine into surrendering further territory to Moscow in exchange for peace. Putin has signalled that he wants to take control of the whole Donbas region as a pre-condition for an end to the war. Russian forces occupy large swathes of the two provinces that make up this region - Donetsk and Luhansk. 8 8 Ukrainian firefighters search for survivors after a Russian air strike on a residential building Credit: Getty But Ukraine still controls the strategically critical "fortress belt" in Donetsk, that analysts fear could be used by Moscow as a launchpad for future invasions. It prompted European leaders to fly to Washington and accompany Volodymyr Zelensky for crunch peace talks with Trump on Monday. The Ukrainian war leader sought to shore up American and European security guarantees for his country in the event of a halt to the fighting. Donald Trump has ruled out putting US boots on the ground - and has dashed Ukrainian hopes of joining Nato. He said instead: "We've got the European nations, and they'll front-load it. "When it comes to security, the Europeans are willing to put people on the ground." The White House is now pushing for a trilateral meeting with Trump, Putin and Zelensky to further peace discussions. Will there be a summit with Putin? VLADIMIR Putin has failed to publicly commit to a sit down with Volodymyr Zelensky off back of duelling summits with Donald Trump. It came after a love-in at the White House yesterday which saw Zelensky and Trump smooth over their differences and appear to pave the way for peace. The Ukrainian leader said he was "ready" to speak to Putin in-person under any circumstances. And any face-to-face showdown - which would be their first since the start of the war in February 2022 - could be followed by a trilateral summit with Donald Trump. So far however the Kremlin have remained coy on any details, despite Vlad reportedly telling Trump he was interested in talks. Moscow have remained publicly silent - and there have been no details released about when, or where, such a historic summit could occur. Efforts have previously been made to bring Zelensky and Putin together - with the Ukrainian leader even challenging Vlad to meet in Istanbul back in May. Silence from the Russian side raises fears that once again the tyrant could torpedo any attempt for talks at the highest level. 8 European leaders dashed to Washington in support of Zelensky this week Credit: AFP
