SL vs BAN 1st Test: Sri Lanka debutant Rathnayake changes bowling arm to target batter's weakness
Ambidextrous Sri Lanka spinner Tharindu Rathnayake said he switched his bowling arm according to the weakness of the batter on strike as he took two wickets on the first day of his debut Test match against Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Both of Rathnayake's wickets came from right-arm deliveries in the first session, but the 29-year-old also bowled with his left arm as visitor Bangladesh posted 292 for three at Stumps in Galle.
'We talked about what each batsman is better at facing, and which sides they hit to. So, I try to create plans around their weaknesses, and change which arm I'm bowling with according to that,' Rathnayake was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo as saying.
Rathnayake is not the only ambidextrous spinner in the Sri Lanka team, with Kamindu Mendis also known to bowl with both arms. But all-rounder Mendis has taken only 31 First-Class wickets in 56 matches while Rathnayake, primarily a bowler, has 337 in 73 appearances.
'I don't know which arm I've taken more wickets with. I've never looked at it properly. I've bowled a lot with both my arms,' Rathnayake said.
'When I started First-Class cricket, I bowled a lot with my left arm. But later, after a couple of years, it became about 60 per cent right arm and 40 per cent left arm.'
Sri Lanka will play two Tests against Bangladesh this month, followed by three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals in July.

'If I'm the captain, I would tell Rishabh Pant...': Sachin Tendulkar sounds alarm over India star's 'risky' batting
Team India will kick off its new World Test Championship cycle on Friday as it takes on Ben Stokes' England in the first Test of the five-match series in England. The series is significant not just in terms of the WTC cycle, but also because it begins India's transitional era in the longest format. With two stalwarts of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, retiring from the format, the series will see a relatively younger Indian team aiming to make its mark in Test cricket. While Shubman Gill leads the side for the first time, Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter, will be his deputy. Pant will continue to bat at No. 5 in the Test side, but with added leadership duties, the spotlight on his temperament and approach has only intensified. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, long known for his fearless strokeplay, now faces growing calls for maturity, especially in light of the criticism he copped during India's 2024/25 tour of Australia. Pant's tendency to throw his wicket away drew sharp reactions from both fans and former cricketers, with many questioning his decision-making under pressure. Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar has now stressed the need for Pant to evolve; while Tendulkar did encourage Pant to back his instincts, he stressed the southpaw must bat with greater responsibility if he is to fulfil his potential in the longest format. "He [Pant] should back his instincts most of the time," Tendulkar said. 'But there'll be situations where he'll have to curb his game in the interests of the team,' he added, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. 'I know that whatever he does the rest of the time will also be in the interest of the team, but the approach might have to be different. He has to have that flexibility in his mind. If there are times when you're looking to save the game, then he may have to adapt that defensive approach, for let's say an hour or 45 minutes or sometimes two hours, where he'll have to just take those risky shots out of the game and not be as aggressive. He could be positive, but the shot selection will come into play.' Tendulkar also explained how he would handle Rishabh Pant if he were the Indian captain. He stated that he would allow the wicketkeeper-batter a free hand in his aggressive approach, but if India needed to save the match, he would want Pant to play responsibly. "Nine out of ten times, if I'm the captain, I'll say, 'Just go out and play your game, why worry about anything.' If you're looking to save the game, that is when the approach changes a bit, but otherwise I would tell him that you go out and be yourself and do what you feel is in the best interest of the team," said Tendulkar.

Many cricketers such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, and Shikhar Dhawan have made cameo appearances in Bollywood. However, none of them ever quit playing the sport. Today, we will discuss a man who started his career by playing alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Over time, he realised his interest leaned more towards acting, which led him to quit cricket and pursue a career as an actor. After venturing into acting, this man became a TV star, but his Bollywood career never took off. This person had an impressive cricket debut when he played against Pakistan in his first match. Coincidentally, it also marked the international debut of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. If you're wondering who this person is, let us give you a bit of nostalgia. Remember the famous horror-comedy show Ssshhh…Koi Hai? He is the same actor we're talking about! He is none other than Salil Ankola. When Salil Started His Career with Sachin Tendulkar Salil Ankola, a right-arm fast-medium bowler, represented India in 20 One Day Internationals between 1989 and 1997, including the 1996 Cricket World Cup co-hosted by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Salil Ankola's TV Debut However, Salil had to face a string of dismal performances, and with that, he decided to retire at the age of 28. Salil realised his passion for acting and made his debut in the TV series Chahat Aur Nafrat in 1997. Over the years, he worked in various serials such as Kora Kagaz, Kehta Hai Dil, Vikraal Aur Gabraal, and Rishtey. However, in the late 2000s, good scripts and offers started to decline, and Salil was left with nothing. This was the time when he turned to alcohol. The addiction not only ruined his professional career but also his personal life. His 19-year-long marriage ended in divorce in 2011. The sportsperson in him resurfaced, leading him to seek help at a rehabilitation centre. Ankola made a strong comeback and gained recognition for his role as Surya Dev in the Colors TV show Karmaphal Daata Shani, which aired from 2016 to 2018.
