SL Vs BAN: Sri Lanka's Pacer Ruled Out Of Second Test Against Bangladesh
Sri Lanka's Milan Rathnayake has been ruled out for the second Test against Bangladesh after sustaining a left-side strain in the first game. Sri Lankan pacer Milan Rathnayake has been ruled out of the second Test against Bangladesh, scheduled to begin in Colombo on Wednesday. Rathnayake sustained a left-side strain during the opening Test of the two-match series last week. Although he briefly left the field on the second morning in Galle, he returned to claim three wickets by the end of the first innings, finishing the Test with a total of four wickets. Rathnayake displayed economical bowling, and his late burst on day two helped limit Bangladesh's first innings total to a manageable target for Sri Lanka. Additionally, he contributed a valuable 39 runs off 83 balls, forming an 84-run seventh-wicket partnership with Kamindu Mendis. Vishwa Fernando, a left-arm seamer, has been named as Rathnayake's replacement. Spin-bowling allrounder Dunith Wellalage has also been added to Sri Lanka's squad. The 22-year-old is set to replace Angelo Mathews, who retired from Test cricket following the first match of the series. If Sri Lanka decides to replace Rathnayake with another allrounder, they currently do not have a seam-bowling allrounder in the squad. Wellalage and Sonal Dinusha, both left-arm spinners, could be considered. However, given that the SSC pitch typically offers less assistance to spinners than Galle, Sri Lanka might prefer to include an extra fast bowler instead. If one of the spinners is selected, Tharindu Rathnayake may be the one to miss out. The pace attack comprises Vishwa Fernando, Asitha Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, and uncapped Isitha Wijesundara. To fill Mathews' spot in the XI, Pasindu Sooriyabandara or Pavan Rathnayake are the likely options, both having shown strong form in recent domestic cricket and for Sri Lanka A. Oshada Fernando is also in contention, following a productive spell with Sri Lanka A late in 2024. Following this second Test against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will not play another Test match until 2025. Dhananjaya de Silva (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Oshada Fernando, Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha, Pavan Rathnayake, Prabath Jayasuriya, Tharindu Rathnayake, Akila Dananjaya, Vishwa Fernando, Asitha Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Isitha Wijesundara. Nayeem's five-for helps Bangladesh gain slender lead against Sri Lanka in 1st test
Associated Press GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan spun a fine web around the Sri Lankan lower order to finish with a five-wicket haul as Bangladesh eked out a slender first innings lead of 10 runs on Day 4 of the series-opening cricket test Friday. It was Nayeem's fourth five-for in test cricket and he was ably supported by the lively Hasan Mahmud, whose three-wicket burst proved pivotal in tilting the balance after lunch. The drama unfolded in a flurry after the interval, as the pitch — placid for the better part of four days — finally began to show signs of wear. The spinners suddenly found bite, bounce, and turn and the Sri Lankan tail was swiftly undone. The tall and wiry Mahmud ended Milan Rathnayake's valiant vigil. Rathnayake had stitched together a partnership of 84 runs for the seventh wicket with the ever-composed Kamindu Mendis. The alliance gave Sri Lanka hopes of a handy lead, but those hopes were dashed when Rathnayake played on, dragging one back onto his stumps. The very next over proved decisive. Nayeem delivered a double blow. First, he removed the well-set Mendis for 87. Mendis was undone by extra bounce and could only feather an edge to the keeper. Then, Nayeem made short work of debutant Tharindu Rathnayake, beating his tentative prod and rattling the timbers. With the end in sight, he returned to remove Asitha Fernando, cleaning him up to complete his five-for. Earlier, Mendis was inching closer to yet another test century. The prolific lefthander was unbeaten on 83 at the interval, aiming for what would be his sixth test hundred in just 12 matches. Resuming Friday at 368 for four — still 127 in arrears — Sri Lanka had a a brief wobble early when skipper Dhananjaya de Silva departed for 19, edging behind tamely, and Kusal Mendis (5) followed soon after. But Kamindu found an able partner in allrounder Rathnayake, who was unbeaten on 38 in a 79-run stand for the seventh wicket. Rathnayake had some luck on seven when Taijul Islam dropped a sharp return catch. ___ AP cricket: recommended in this topic

Sri Lanka's Ambidextrous Spinner Shines On Debut In 1st Test Vs Bangladesh
Last Updated: Sri Lanka's ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Rathnayake switches arms based on the batter's weaknesses. Sri Lanka's ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Rathnayake mentioned that he switches his bowling arm based on the weaknesses of the batter on strike. This strategy helped him claim two wickets on the first day of his debut Test match against Bangladesh on Tuesday. Both of Rathnayake's wickets were taken with right-arm deliveries in the first session. However, the 29-year-old also bowled with his left arm as Bangladesh ended the day at 292-3 in Galle. 'We talked about what each batsman is better at facing, and which sides they hit to. So I try to create plans around their weaknesses, and change which arm I'm bowling with according to that," Rathnayake was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo as saying. Rathnayake is not the only ambidextrous spinner in the Sri Lankan team, as Kamindu Mendis is also known for bowling with both arms. However, Mendis, an all-rounder, has taken only 31 first-class wickets in 56 matches, while Rathnayake, primarily a bowler, has taken 337 wickets in 73 appearances. 'I don't know which arm I've taken more wickets with. I've never looked at it properly. I've bowled a lot with both my arms," Rathnayake said. 'When I started first-class cricket, I bowled a lot with my left arm. But later, after a couple of years, it became about 60% right arm and 40% left arm." First Published: June 18, 2025, 17:10 IST

SL vs BAN 1st Test: Sri Lanka debutant Rathnayake changes bowling arm to target batter's weakness
Ambidextrous Sri Lanka spinner Tharindu Rathnayake said he switched his bowling arm according to the weakness of the batter on strike as he took two wickets on the first day of his debut Test match against Bangladesh on Tuesday. Both of Rathnayake's wickets came from right-arm deliveries in the first session, but the 29-year-old also bowled with his left arm as visitor Bangladesh posted 292 for three at Stumps in Galle. 'We talked about what each batsman is better at facing, and which sides they hit to. So, I try to create plans around their weaknesses, and change which arm I'm bowling with according to that,' Rathnayake was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo as saying. Rathnayake is not the only ambidextrous spinner in the Sri Lanka team, with Kamindu Mendis also known to bowl with both arms. But all-rounder Mendis has taken only 31 First-Class wickets in 56 matches while Rathnayake, primarily a bowler, has 337 in 73 appearances. 'I don't know which arm I've taken more wickets with. I've never looked at it properly. I've bowled a lot with both my arms,' Rathnayake said. 'When I started First-Class cricket, I bowled a lot with my left arm. But later, after a couple of years, it became about 60 per cent right arm and 40 per cent left arm.' Sri Lanka will play two Tests against Bangladesh this month, followed by three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals in July.
