Andie Chen says, 'It should be my turn already' after not winning any Star Awards in his 27-year acting career

SINGAPORE: The Star Awards 2025 are just around the corner on Jul 6! Everyone's wondering who's going to take home a trophy and who's going to leave empty-handed. It's been mentioned on CNA that Andie Chen, who used to work with Mediacorp and has been in the business for almost thirty years, hasn't actually won any awards at the show yet. Photo: Instagram/Andie Chen So, when they told the 39-year-old actor about his nominations for Best Actor, Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes, and even BYD Favourite Male Character this year, he said he's already braced himself for the possibility of not winning again. He was saying to Chinese media outlet 8world that since he's been up for Best Actor so many times now, even though he's always really happy to be nominated, there's still this little bit of nerves that always pops up. No award In 2017, Chen was actually in the running for not one, not two, but three awards: Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes, and still, he didn't win anything that night. As if going through that wasn't tough enough, the same thing happened again last year! It even got to the point where Chen joked that he's pretty sure he's developed 'Star Awards Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Chen's portrayal of a strict father in Born to Shine has earned him a nomination this year for Best Actor. Richie Koh ( Coded Love ), Qi Yuwu ( Once Upon a New Year's Eve ), Gavin Teo ( To Be Loved ), and Christopher Lee ( Kill Sera Sera ) constitute this year's competition for the Best Actor Award for Chen. The actor was asked how he felt about his chances of taking home a trophy this time around. 'It's about time!' He even joked about it, saying, 'Those who won before, still fight what fight, the newcomers still come and snatch from me. I already have it so hard! Shouldn't they let the 'old man' win? It should be my turn already!' Chen has been acting since he was literally a kid, around 11 years old. He even won Star Search way back in 2007, so he jokingly pointed out that he's already been in the industry for a solid 27 years. Nevertheless, Chen said that he doesn't have high expectations for victory and doesn't dare to give it much thought. 'I'm still very grateful, because the character I played this time isn't that likable, so to be seen by the judges is quite a happy thing for me,' he admitted. Also, just so you know, Chen's main competition includes Lee, Qi, and Koh – all of whom have already won the Best Actor award at the Star Awards before. Let younger guys have a go He even quipped, 'I think big brother Chris' hands are tired from receiving so many awards, he doesn't need to fight with the younger generation anymore!' When asked if he might finally take home a trophy this time, Chen laughed and said, 'I'll leave this question to the audience and judges. Is it time for me to break the curse?' However, there's a bit of a funny situation: Chen isn't even sure if he'll be able to attend the Star Awards ceremony because he might be busy filming in Taiwan at the time. Radio DJ Germaine Tan is engaged to Zouk Group's chief executive Andrew Li

SINGAPORE - Wedding bells are set to ring for local radio DJ Germaine Tan and Mr Andrew Li, the chief executive of Singapore lifestyle and hospitality company Zouk Group. The engagement was announced by Tan, a presenter at Mediacorp's English-language radio station 987, on social media on June 1. Mr Li, who is in his early 40s, was tagged in the post. 'Andrew has always known my appreciation for sunsets and (the) ocean, so he'd been planning this secretly for some time,' wrote Tan, who is in her late 20s, of the romantic proposal. 'In the Maldives, on a private sandbank, while the evening sun approached the horizon over the open ocean. It couldn't have felt more right.' The couple, who first met at local cocktail bar Here Kitty Kitty in 2022, have been dating for over two years. Tan, who joined Mediacorp in 2015 and is also a lifestyle influencer and host, continued: 'I knew all along it was going to be you. The way you love me so fiercely inspires me to be the best version of myself. If you let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you happy'. She added: 'Your care and generosity toward my loved ones make me even more in love with you. I can't imagine life without you as my pillar of support, and I wouldn't want a life like that anyway.' The newly-engaged lovebirds were congratulated on social media by several celebrity pals, including Yes933 DJ Hazelle Teo, actor Ben Yeo, actress Tay Ying and celebrity chef Wu Sihan. Tay and Wu will be tying the knot in June. Mediacorp's artiste management arm The Celebrity Agency also congratulated Tan and Mr Li, writing: 'From dancing at a bar to a sunset proposal in Maldives, their love story felt written in the stars. Through every challenge and triumph, they grew stronger together. Now, they are saying yes to a lifetime of love.' London-born Mr Li joined Zouk Group as chairman in 2015 and became its chief executive in 2016. He oversaw the return of dusk-to-dawn electronic dance music festival ZoukOut in 2022 after a three-year hiatus. Join ST's WhatsApp Channel and get the latest news and must-reads.

Final-year polytechnic student Georgina Dobson wins Mediacorp's 987 STAR competition

A new voice may soon grace the airwaves: The winner of Mediacorp's 987 STAR 2025 competition, final-year psychology studies student from Temasek Polytechnic Georgina Pattarida Dobson. Dobson on Saturday (May 31) beat out the other three finalists – Lex Whitlock, Nicolette Callie Wee and Shaniah Kiew – in a two-hour grand finale to win the S$5,000 cash prize, courtesy of Fisherman's Friend, and a contract with Mediacorp 987. According to Dobson's LinkedIn profile, she is also president of her polytechnic's emcees club. "Winning still feels so surreal – someone please pinch me! I've grown tremendously since the very day I first stepped into the audition booth. I'm incredibly grateful for the unwavering support and guidance from our amazing mentors throughout this journey," she said. "I'm also especially thankful for the friendships I've built with so many insanely talented contestants. Can't wait to see what exciting adventures await with Mediacorp 987!' Hosted by 987 DJs Sonia Chew and Joakim Gomez, the search for the next big audio personality kicked off at the start of April. The competition sought to uncover budding talent, serving as a launchpad for their future careers in the entertainment industry, like what similar contests did for past winners and radio DJs Ann Nicole, Kimberly Wang and Chew herself. In the finale held live at 313@Somerset on Saturday, the top four finalists competed in a series of challenges designed to bring out their stage presence, vocal prowess, spontaneity and charisma. For example, in the Wheel Of Flavours challenge, each contestant spun a wheel featuring eight Fisherman's Friend flavours. Each flavour unlocked a "would you rather" question, challenging finalists to respond with creativity, humour and confidence. In another challenge testing their hosting skills – from witty introductions to compelling conversations and rapport-building – each contestant was tasked to interview local musicians WhyLucas and Shazza live, demonstrating their ability to connect with both the artistes and audience. Judging the series of challenges were local personality SGAG's Xiao Ming, Mediacorp's Chief Talent Officer Doreen Neo, Mediacorp Class 95's Muttons - Justin Ang and Vernon A, and Mediacorp 987's Programme Director Janice Lim. Contestants were evaluated based on their "vocal delivery, creativity, originality and audience engagement", said Mediacorp in a media release on Saturday night. "After careful deliberation, the judges awarded the title of Mediacorp 987 STAR 2025 to Georgina for her authenticity and poise." Mediacorp's head of growth and audio, Simone Lum, congratulated Dobson for "a truly standout performance that embodied what Mediacorp 987 STAR is all about – creativity, authenticity, and strong audience connection". "We're also incredibly proud of all our finalists – each of them brought something special to this competition, and it's been a joy to witness their growth over the course of this journey. We hope this experience has been rewarding for them, and we look forward to seeing where their talents will take them in the media industry," she said.
