Alabama basketball starter, expected 2025-26 leader, lands in first 2026 NBA mock drafts
Philon's return gives Nate Oats' team a needed boost after the Crimson Tide lost impact starters Mark Sears, Grant Nelson and Clifford Omoruyi from its 2024-25 roster due to eligibility.

As the Dallas Mavericks made official what everyone had known for months with the selection of Duke's Cooper Flagg at No. 1 overall in this week's draft, national outlets like ESPN, CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, et al, were already finalizing way-too-early 2026 NBA draft projections.
That's where Philon comes in. After decommitting from Kansas and joining Alabama as a 4-star recruit and the No. 32 overall player in the nation by 247Sports and ESPN, the Mobile native played in all 37 games for the Crimson Tide in 2024-25. He averaged 10.6 points and 3.3 rebounds with 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals.
Philon averaged almost 25 minutes a night last season and tied a season-high with 21 points in the Crimson Tide's rout of Kentucky in the SEC Tournament. He shot 42.5 percent from the field a season ago.
In Bleacher Report's first 2026 NBA mock draft on Friday, Philon landed at No. 27 overall with analyst Jonathan Wasserman saying:
"He'll return to Alabama to improve his shooting, which is a potential needle-mover for a point guard who already excels at getting to his spots, setting up teammates and scoring with unteachable touch inside the arc."
Philon also landed on ESPN's first 2026 NBA mock draft in roughly the same spot. Analysts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo have Philon at No. 28 overall, one spot ahead of Florida Gators big man Alex Condon.
Philon being a late-round projection heading into 2025-26 could work to his advantage. He had a fair amount of confidence in his draft stock after telling ESPN's Jeff Borzello in May that the door was closed on a return to Alabama.
There's obvious talent in his shot and overall play, but a sophomore season in college basketball's toughest conference could make Philon as battle-tested for the NBA as almost anyone in 2026

Justin Edwards, multiple Sixers putting in work at Rico Hines Runs
A post shared by Cassy Athena Photo 📸 (@cassyathenaphoto) It's late in the NBA offseason calendar so now is the time for players to begin getting some final workouts in to prepare for the upcoming season. The schedule has dropped and the 2025-26 season is right around the corner as everybody gets set for another run at the Larry O'Brien trophy. The Philadelphia 76ers figure to be one of those teams involved in the race in the Eastern Conference if they can just get a little bit of health compared to the 2024-25 season when they finished 24-58. The Sixers will also be counting on some younger players to develop and be a part of a championship-caliber rotation. That group of youngsters include second-year forward Justin Edwards, rookies VJ Edgecombe and Johni Broome, as well as new additions such as Trendon Watford (24) and Jabari Walker (23). Those five were featured in a collection of photos at the famed Rico Hines Runs in UCLA as NBA players embark for Southern California in an effort to get final prep done for the new season. It's important for these young players to get some run in with some of the best in the league. The Sixers will be counting on them--certainly Edwards, Edgecombe, and Watford for sure--and it will be important for them to get this time in on the floor to take another step forward in their development. The Rico Hines Runs are a terrific way for them to do so.

Knicks Linked to Possible Late NBA Free Agency Splash
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Knicks have had an interesting NBA offseason thus far. After coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Indiana Pacers, some changes were made by management. First and foremost, the Knicks decided to move on from former head coach Tom Thibodeau. Despite having a lot of success while leading the team, Thibodeau simply could not get over the hump. New York chose to go in a different direction. To replace Thibodeau, the Knicks landed on Mike Brown. He'll bring a different philosophy that will rely much heavier on a full rotation as opposed to riding the starters as much as New York has in recent years. Read more: Warriors' Draymond Green Fires Strong Shot at Heat After Latest Trade Even though free agency has slowed down dramatically, there are still some good players left available for New York to consider if they want to make another move. One name to keep an eye on could be veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon. David Vertsberger of SNY has suggested that Brogdon could be a potential target for the Knicks. He would bring in the ability to score, create for teammates, and be a steady veteran leader off of the bench. "If the Knicks have any reservations, signing Brogdon would be a nice insurance policy on their backcourt options. Like Simmons, he's likely past his prime but can provide some reliable playmaking," Vertsberger wrote. "Unlike Simmons, he's only two years removed from winning Sixth Man of the Year and currently has some more credible NBA skills. Brogdon is a career 38.8 percent shooter from three and has evolved into more of a distributor in his last few seasons." Brogdon was unable to play much last season with the Washington Wizards due to injuries. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game in 24 appearances and 13 starts. Read more: Lakers Expected to Make Key Contract Decision Before Season Back in the 2022-23 season with the Boston Celtics that saw him win the Sixth Man of the Year award, Brogdon played in 67 games and averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, while shooting 48.4 percent overall and 44.4 percent from three-point range. It wouldn't be a "flashy" move for New York, but Brogdon is the definition of solid. He would be well worth picking up for the Knicks.
