Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways
Nitin Gadkari
inaugurated India's second-longest cable-stayed
Sigandur bridge
in Karnataka's
Shivamogga district
on Monday. The bridge across the Sharavathi backwaters between
Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli
in
Sagara taluk
has been built at a cost of Rs 472 crore, PTI reported quoting officials.
The bridge is aimed at reducing the distance from Sagara town to the villages around Sigandur, a place which is known for the
Chowdeshwari temple
.
The bridge has been constructed after the demand from local residents. They had lost road connectivity after the construction of the Linganmakki dam to generate power in the 1960s.

People used to cross the river with coracles. However, in a tragic incident, 21 people died after a boat capsized in the backwaters. The incident prompted the residents to make their demand heard. Officials had introduced ferries operated by the Department of Ports and Inland Water Transport.
In recent decades, the demand for a bridge grew louder as the number of people visiting Chowdeshwari temple at Sigandur increased.
Live Events
Along with Gadkari, the event was attended by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa
However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or any of his ministers did not attend the event.
Siddaramaiah had urged Gadkari to postpone the inauguration of the bridge and foundation stone laying ceremony of infrastructure projects at Sagara taluk in Shivamogga today, stating that he was not informed in advance.
The CM had cited his visit Indi taluk in Vijayapura district, saying it would have been more appropriate for ministry to have consulted with the state government before scheduling such a programme.

Anticipating GST changes, Ludhiana industry wants reforms expedited.

Ludhiana: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled what he called a "Diwali gift", major reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), industrial and trade bodies are expressing cautious optimism. While they welcome the simplification, stakeholders insist that swift implementation, especially of refunds, is essential to prevent disruptions and revive consumption. In his August 15 Independence Day address, PM Modi revealed plans to overhaul GST by October, aimed at easing the tax burden on daily-use items and MSMEs. The long-standing four-slab system (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) is being anticipated to be replaced by a streamlined two-slab structure with rates of 5% and 18%, and a special 40% rate on sin and luxury goods like tobacco and pan masala, as per reports of proposal having been sent to the group of ministers (GoM) and state finance ministers, ahead of the GST council's meeting. Industrialists and businessmen of Ludhiana expect that this reform could boost domestic consumption, exports, and market sentiment. "The prospect of two main GST rates are welcome, but delayed refunds could cripple operations. If we must wait for GST refunds on expenditure on raw materials, it's going to be tough," Avtar Singh Bhogal, vice-president, UCPMA, said, stressing that timely refunds would support purchasing power and curtail GST evasion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's Daughter Shiloh Now Goes by a New Name After Dropping Pitt BigGlobalTravel Undo Upkar Singh Ahuja, president of the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), echoed the urgency. He warned that markets were already slow and showed signs of recession, with consumers delaying purchases in anticipation of GST relief. "Whatever changes are to be done, do them now, not wait until Diwali," he urged. "People are have stopped purchasing on big items anticipating lower GST and, thus, prices," he said. There have been long-standing industry demands for GST simplification, Harsimarjit Singh Lucky, UCMPA president said. He added that reforms would bring relief that would curtail evasion and simplify compliance. Sonu Nilibar, president of the Punjab Textile Merchant Association, said "A uniform 5% GST rate on garments would be a landmark reform. It will bring much-needed clarity, make goods affordable, boost consumption, and ease compliance. On behalf of trade, I warmly thank Prime Minister Modi for considering this long-awaited reform." Despite warnings by RPSC, attendance still low in exams

Ajmer: Despite making strict rules and issuing warnings to ensure that attendance in its recruitment exams is high, Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) continues to face the problem of a large number of absentees. The secretary of RPSC released a notification on May 9 this year, stating that if a candidate remains absent in two or more recruitment exams, their one-time registration will be blocked. To reopen the registration, a penalty of Rs 750 would have to be paid. A penalty of Rs 1,500 would have to be paid by those who remain absent in four exams. The commission also warned e-mitras against filling applications on behalf of candidates. Efforts were also made to prevent ineligible candidates from filing applications. "The RPSC has to prepare exam halls for a large number of candidates, but when most of them remain absent, it is a waste of money and efforts," said an official of RPSC. However, attendance in recruitment exams conducted by RPSC has not increased as yet. Exams conducted in July and Aug saw low attendance. On Wednesday, the recruitment exam for analyst-cum-programmer and deputy director in department of DOIT &C, for which 7,367 candidates applied, saw only 3,170 in the morning session and 3,157 in the evening session, a 42.85% attendance. In the assistant fisheries development officer exam on July 29, the attendance was only 5.88%: of the 4,118 candidates who applied, only 242 appeared.
