‘I just know she's here': Widower cycling 30,000 kilometres for late wife

CTV News3 days ago
Widower Mark Herbst is riding 30,000 kilometres on his bike, honouring his late wife.
Matt Gervais, a member of the YQG Cycling Club, rode with Orillia's Mark Herbst on Tuesday morning.
'I can't wait to hear more of his stories. We didn't get enough time with him,' Gervais said before bidding his new friend farewell.
The 69-year-old widower is turning his grief into purpose, riding around the world while chasing a world record in the process.
Herbst arrived in Leamington on Monday night from Ohio, entering the sixth of 21 countries he'll visit.
Since January, Herbst has been on a journey around the world that started and will end in Thailand.
'189 days ago today, I left Bangkok, Thailand, went down through Malaysia, Singapore, across Australia, up to New Zealand, over to Vancouver, down the west coast, to the U.S., up Route 66 to Leamington,' Herbst told CTV News.

He's on the Canada leg of a tour enroute to setting a Guinness World Record for the oldest person to ride around the world. The minimum distance is 29,000 kilometres with the same bicycle. The route is tracked.
Herbst does shoot a daily video and has to take pictures to validate where he has been. There have been some unique stops along the way, including Route 66.
'You can go through all these little towns and one of them that I went through was Winslow, Arizona,' he said.
'Anybody who was an Eagles fan, there was the song 'Take It Easy' and there's a line says, 'standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. It's such a fine, fine place to be. And then, flatbed Ford, girl slowing down to take a look at me.' You can go there and stand at the statue with Glenn Frey and a flatbed Ford. It was really cool.'
Mark admitted the journey can get lonely at times, providing a lot of time to reflect on the real reason he is on the road.
'I'm also raising funds for Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. They're one of the top five cancer research hospitals in the world. And the reason I'm doing that is my wife died of cancer three years ago,' said Herbst, who described his wife as an Ironman athlete full of life that lost her battle to cancer.
In some of the moments of solitude while on his journey, Herbst said he has had spiritual enlightenment.
'There are moments I'll ride along, and I'll just have this thought of Jackie, just start crying but there's so much happiness in there as well,' he said.
'It's just like there are days when I just know she's here.'
Herbst has had people join him during the ride and he plans to share all of his experiences in a book.
When asked if he had one message to anyone reading this he said'
'Challenge yourself. Doesn't have to be a ride around the world. It's just like anything. Ride around the block and learn a language. Just use these gifts that we've been given before they're gone,' Herbst said.
He hopes to raise $100,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto.

Stratford Festival extends to December for the first time ever

A sign for the Stratford Festival seen in July 2023. (File) With strong ticket sales and continuing demand, the Stratford Festival is expanding their extended show catalogue. This season the festival takes the unprecedented step of extending four shows, 'Annie', 'Macbeth', 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' and 'Anne of Green Gables'. They are also extending their production of Annie longer than ever before, with an extra six weeks of added shows, taking the festival into December for the first time ever. It is a move that makes a lot of sense for the star of' Annie'. 'It starts about like two weeks before Christmas, and then our big finale scene is in Mr. Warbucks mansion, and it's decorated for Christmas' said Harper Rae Asch, who plays Annie. The young actor is excited to be part of a Stratford Festival first. 'I'm very excited because now Annie is going to be the longest running show in festival history,' she said. Stratford Festival leadership now is the right time to try something new. 'It's a reflection of how well the productions are being received so far this year, and it also meets an aspiration, that we've had over the last few years to experiment with some holiday programing,' said Anita Gaffney, executive director of the Stratford Festival. Staff acknowledge the move is not without risk. 'We don't know if this is going to work, we don't know what the weather's going to be like., so there is some risk there, but there is great benefit opportunities,' said Gaffney. Is there a song of the summer yet? The internet says no

We asked kids and they were stumped Many on the internet are wondering: where is the song of the summer for 2025? In the three weeks since summer officially started, there hasn't been one track that feels like the theme song to the season. According to many articles, posts and comments on social media platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter), TikTok and Reddit, we are in a 'summer slump' for music. Often, the song of the summer feels a lot more obvious. Last year, the tracks that topped 2024's songs of the summer lists — like Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter, Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar, or I Had Some Help by Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen — were everywhere. This year, we have … *crickets.* Music fans are taking to social media in search of the song of the summer. Many are wondering what the song will be. (Image credit: @imnotpopbase and @JanellePierzina/X) CBC Kids News took to the streets of Toronto, Ontario, to ask kids what they think the song of the summer has been. Many had trouble naming one. In fact, many of them picked older songs from previous years. Click play to hear which songs kids are rocking with this summer ⬇️⬇️⬇️ How is the song of the summer decided? There are a few different measures for determining the song of the summer. It's often a matter of personal opinion and preference — it's that one song you see and hear everywhere you go, from the radio to your social feeds to streaming playlists. But there are also more official ways to track it. Billboard, an American music publication, typically crowns its song of the summer every September. Billboard tracks how songs perform on its Hot 100 chart between late May and early September. The chart is cumulative, meaning it adds up all the radio plays, streams and sales from every week to keep a running total. As of mid-July, Alex Warren's song Ordinary is in the top spot, with songs by Drake and Morgan Wallen also climbing the charts. Make your pick Here are the top ten songs on Billboard's Song of the Summer chart as of July 18. Do any of these songs sum up summer 2025 for you? Have more questions?
