AI is being used to design custom proteins that help immune cells find and kill cancer

In lab tests, T cells outfitted with these proteins swiftly located and killed melanoma cells, a fast-spreading and often deadly form of skin cancer.'It's like giving immune cells Google Maps for cancer,' said lead researcher Dr. Timothy Jenkins, a medical biotechnologist at the Technical University of Denmark. 'We're helping T cells find the tumor much more efficiently than they could on their own.'The work is an early-stage form of immunotherapy, a treatment approach that boosts the body's natural defenses to fight disease. The idea builds on successful techniques like CAR T-cell therapy but adds a major twist: Instead of relying on naturally occurring cell receptors, which can take months to isolate and test, the scientists used AI to design new proteins from scratch in just use of AI toolsTo create the molecular guides, the researchers used three AI tools. First, a generative model called RFdiffusion was used to analyze the structure of a specific cancer target known as NY-ESO-1, a protein found on many tumor cells. Then, another model proposed amino acid sequences that would fold into the right shape to bind the target. A third model helped narrow tens of thousands of options down to just 44, which were tested in the lab. One design stood out, and it study builds on a wave of recent breakthroughs in computational biology, including technologies that led to the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein structure prediction. Earlier this year, Jenkins' team also developed AI-designed proteins for improved snakebite trials are still years away, and many questions remain about how the proteins will perform in the human body. But the researchers are optimistic.

Duty relief to boost pharma companies' access to UK drug stores

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The India-UK FTA is expected to give a strong tailwind to India's pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors with tariff relief and smoother regulatory pathways acting as critical drivers, industry experts told agreement will boost exports giving an easier access to the UK market. It is expected to help Indian companies - especially those in generics and biosimilars - to scale their market presence, fast track product approvals, provide a push to cross-border R&D and UK has committed to zero tariff on nearly 99% of Indian pharma exports. While Indian pharma exports to the UK were largely duty free even earlier, the latest agreement formalises the status which brings in long-term clarity to to industry estimates, the pharma market size of the UK stands at about $45 billion and is expected to shoot to $73 billion by 2033. The share of the Indian drugs can see a significant push from the UK's generics segment which is currently pegged at $5 pharmaceutical exports to the UK crossed $910 million in FY24, according to estimates."The agreement strengthens supply chains , enhances access to affordable medicines , and drives Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)," said Namit Joshi, Chairman of Pharmexcil."This partnership paves the way for collaborations in bulk drug imports, CDMO (contract manufacturing), and joint research, empowering India's competitive edge and promoting global partnerships."The pact will open up trade and economic opportunities between the two countries. "The pharma sector will have opportunities to supply quality medicines contributing to better patient care in the UK," said Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance."The tariffs relief on generic medicines and key medical devices like surgical instruments and diagnostics under the FTA will enhance the affordability and appeal of Indian products in the UK market," said Manoj Mishra, Partner and Tax Controversy Management Leader, Grant Thornton Bharat. The move significantly boosts the competitiveness of Indian generics and high-quality affordable healthcare solutions, positioning India to scale its footprint in one of Europe's most valuable healthcare markets, said the medical devices sector too the move is expected to open new opportunities, said experts.

Medical aspirants in Mumbai face registration issues due to Apaar ID confusion

Mumbai: What was supposed to be a routine day of registration turned into a digital nightmare for medical aspirants, as the state's revamped admission form left most stranded at the starting line. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The confusion revolved around the Apaar ID — a unique student identifier that the registration rules called "optional", but the form itself treated as mandatory. Students who attempted to proceed without it found themselves caught in a loop, with the 'Next' button greyed out and a technical error bouncing them back to the beginning. By evening, many were still grappling with unfinished forms and rising anxiety. "The brochure says it's optional. The form says otherwise," said Sudha Shenoy, a parent representative who spent much of the day fielding distress calls. "Even the central admission process by the Medical Counselling Committee for admissions to the all-India quota and to deemed universities has not made Apaar compulsory." As panic spread, many wondered how they could get an Apaar ID. Others waited in vain, hoping the glitch would be resolved. But the system had more in store. For some, the document upload link refused to work; for others, the site insisted they'd already registered. One group couldn't even select their course preferences without the system crashing. CET Cell officials said they helped students sort many issues and the helpline would be active to onboard students.
