KOTA KINABALU (May 10): The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), in collaboration with its state chapter, officially launched the 2025 MATTA Fair Sabah at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Saturday.
The event was officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew.
The three-day event, held from May 9 to 11, showcased strong cooperation between travel agencies, state tourism organisations, airlines and tour operators.
'This year, we are proud to see that the MATTA Fair Sabah has grown larger, with an increased number of booths and more participating companies. These are clear indicators of growing confidence and enthusiasm among tourism stakeholders.
'This expanded participation not only enhances the fair's appeal but also offers valuable opportunities for local travel agencies and tourism players to promote their products and services,' Liew said in her speech.
She also noted that Sabah continues to innovate in its tourism promotion efforts. For example, at the recent MATTA Fair in Kuala Lumpur, the 'Top 5 Mountains in Sabah' campaign was launched to further position the state as an adventure tourism hub in Southeast Asia.
'Peaks such as Mount Kinabalu, Mount Trus Madi and Mount Tambuyukon are among the highlights of this campaign, and we look forward to welcoming more climbers and trekkers in the months ahead.
'Hosting the MATTA Fair in Sabah significantly strengthens the state's position as a top destination for both Malaysians and international tourists. Despite the challenges brought about by the global pandemic in recent years, Sabah's tourism industry has shown tremendous resilience and has made a strong recovery,' she added.
At the Kuala Lumpur MATTA Fair, Liew revealed that Sabah recorded RM4.5 million in sales, a notable increase from RM3 million in September 2024.
She believes this growth clearly reflects the strong demand and increasing appeal of Sabah's Culture, Adventure and Nature (CAN) tourism products. Among the most popular packages were island hopping tours and visits to the Mari Mari Cultural Village.
However, she stressed that the ministry's focus is not solely on boosting sales figures.
'Our efforts are about nurturing partnerships, building stronger networks, and most importantly, creating meaningful and memorable experiences for all who visit Sabah.
'Through continuous collaboration and innovation, we are confident that Sabah's tourism industry will continue to thrive, contributing to both our economy and our reputation as one of Asia's top destinations,' she concluded.
A total of 143 booths representing 51 organisations participated in MATTA Fair Sabah. These included 31 licensed tour and travel agencies, three state tourism offices, two airlines, and five hotels and resorts.
According to MATTA President Nigel Wong, MATTA Fair Sabah is projected to generate RM26 million in sales, an increase from the RM21 million recorded during the previous fair.
'Sabah's reputation as a world-class tourism destination is well established, and MATTA is proud to be a committed partner in growing inbound travel to the state. Our focus remains on expanding the tourism footprint across Sabah.
'Through this fair, MATTA supports not only outbound travel but also plays a strategic role in connecting inbound-ready tour operators with the domestic market and beyond, ensuring that tourism spending remains within the country and benefits local businesses and communities,' he said.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of Fun Holiday Tours and Travel Sdn Bhd, Connie Chong, said that this year's fair saw a somewhat lower turnout compared to last year, despite extensive promotions by the organisers.
'On the first day, Friday, there weren't many visitors, and most of those who did come were just browsing.
The second day was slightly better, but overall, the crowd was still smaller than last year.
'In terms of pricing, most participants offered generous discounts and promotional rates for popular destinations among Sabahans, such as Japan, China, and Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
'For families, the school holidays remain the peak period for bookings. Most of the bookings made during this fair were for travel during the year-end school holidays,' she said.
Chong also noted that travel costs have not changed significantly compared to previous years due to the wide range of options now available on the market. Additionally, Sabah's travellers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about geography, health and safety, making travel planning smoother.

Sarawak targets more Japanese for SMM2H
KUCHING: Sarawak holds great potential to attract more Japanese nationals to participate in the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home (SMM2H) programme, following a rise in the number of tourists from the Land of the Rising Sun visiting the state. Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the SMM2H programme is already popular among Chinese nationals and could also be promoted to interested Japanese citizens. 'It's up to them (the Japanese) to see what Sarawak has to offer, but from what I can observe, especially from applicants from Europe or China, they see Sarawak as a safe place with good medical facilities,' he told reporters after attending the Leo Forum organised by the Lions Club here today. He noted that safety and high-quality medical services are key attractions, particularly for the elderly who are more vulnerable to health issues. He said the education sector is also a factor that attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in Sarawak. During the winding-up session for his ministry at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting last month, Abdul Karim said a total of 560 applications were approved last year for participation in the SMM2H programme, with another 265 approved as of mid-May this year. According to him, these approvals have contributed economically to Sarawak in the form of fixed deposits from the participants, amounting to a total of RM176.9 million.

Fahmi calls out Meta and X over their inaction on online safety
He highlighted TikTok as the only platform that has demonstrated a genuine commitment by voluntarily joining the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil speaks at a press conference following the Launch of the Ethical Guidelines for Reporting and Sharing Suicide-Related Content at Menara Star today. Photo by Bernama PETALING JAYA – Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged social media giants to play a more active role in curbing online harm, calling out Meta and X for failing to adequately address issues such as cyberbullying and suicide prevention. He highlighted TikTok as the only platform that has demonstrated a genuine commitment by voluntarily joining the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF). Speaking at the launch of CMCF's guidelines on reporting and sharing suicide-related content, Fahmi criticised social media platforms that neglect their responsibility to mitigate online harm, including suicide-related issues. "We cannot have these social media platforms washing their hands of content that could also create online harm, particularly related to suicide," he said. He noted that despite outreach efforts by CMCF to involve major players like Meta and X, these companies have not engaged with the forum. In contrast, TikTok proactively joined the CMCF even before the implementation of the government's licensing framework for social media and online messaging services. Fahmi singled out Facebook, urging the platform to recognise that the CMCF is an industry-led initiative, not a government directive, and that participation would benefit them by fostering best practices and codes of conduct. "I wholeheartedly applaud TikTok's approach in voluntarily becoming a member of the Content Forum. For example, Facebook said that they are going to be licensed, but they must understand that the Content Forum is not government-led. "It's industry-led. It's actually in their interest to participate so they can help develop best practices and codes of conduct," he added. The minister also pointed out the alarming financial toll of online scams, which cost Malaysians RM53.88 billion in 2024, equivalent to three per cent of the nation's GDP. Also present was the Chairman of the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia, Rafiq Razali (left). Photo for Bernama Fahmi urged vernacular media outlets to play an active role in suicide prevention efforts by providing mental health resources in multiple languages to ensure broad accessibility. "We need to reach out to the vernacular press. A lot of the content is in English, but our efforts must be understood in all languages," he stated. Journalists were also encouraged to follow the CMCF's guidelines when covering suicide-related stories, focusing on safeguarding the privacy of victims and their families while avoiding detailed reporting that could lead to imitative behaviour. 'Reporting about suicide is most sensitive and most harrowing for any journalist covering the tragedy. We should not divulge the location or the personality in such tragedies,' he added. Fahmi emphasised that the guidelines offer comprehensive advice for the digital ecosystem, including sharing personal experiences responsibly, avoiding trauma-triggering content, and connecting people to support services. Indonesia rolls out US$1.5bil stimulus package after growth slows
The Indonesian economy has been roiled by US President Donald Trump's threatened 32% tariffs, among Asia's highest. (EPA Images pic) JAKARTA : Indonesia began rolling out a US$1.5 billion stimulus package today to boost consumer activity after Southeast Asia's biggest economy posted its slowest growth in more than three years in the first quarter. The archipelago nation's economy grew 4.87% from a year earlier in the first three months of 2025 – a sluggish rate for the developing country last seen during the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-2021. President Prabowo Subianto has drawn criticism for his economic policies, including slashing US$19 billion from the government budget to fund a new sovereign wealth fund. The new stimulus measures include discounts for train, plane and ferry tickets as well as toll subsidies to boost tourism. The government will also disburse additional social aid, while giving cash transfers to low-income workers and discounts on unemployment insurance premiums. A finance ministry spokesman told AFP the programme would come into force today, after the measures were announced earlier in the week. Finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said Monday the package would spur economic activity, with the incentives in force during the school holidays. 'With this stimulus and various acceleration of the government programmes… we hope that in the second quarter, economic growth can still be maintained at close to 5%,' she told a press conference. The Indonesian economy has been roiled by US President Donald Trump's threatened 32% tariffs, among Asia's highest. Indonesian stocks saw their biggest fall for more than a decade after the US leader's 'liberation day' announcement in April. Jakarta remains in talks with Washington over the tariffs before a 90-day pause concludes in July. It has promised to buy more US products to narrow its trade surplus with Washington, including wheat, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.
