FTAs with US, EU soon; exporters to get full govt backing: Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said that trade pacts with the United States and the European Union are likely to be concluded soon. She assured exporters of every possible government support amid the challenging global environment.
'Intense trade negotiations are going on with the US and the European Union and should come to a conclusion sooner. Emphasis is being made on getting more free trade agreements signed,' Sitharaman said at Exim Bank's Trade Conclave 2025 in New Delhi.
The finance minister pointed out that India's total exports have touched an all-time high of $825 billion—a 6 per cent growth over the previous year—despite a challenging global environment. 'This is a significant leap of $466 billion over 2013–14,' she added.
She lauded the grit and perseverance of Indian exporters, acknowledging their continued success despite global headwinds.
'Despite that, I appreciate the Indian exporters putting in that kind of an effort, that they are still growing and are finding real success. And therefore, on this particular occasion, I take this opportunity to congratulate all those exporters who have received their awards. But for those who have not received their awards, you're really swimming against the current and succeeding in it.' She further assured exporters of continued government backing: 'So all support from the Government of India is all that I can assure you, because we need to do that more.'
Sitharaman further highlighted that global trade was slipping, with institutions such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank projecting a decline. 'Global growth in trade has suffered,' she said, adding that Indian exporters were 'swimming against the current' despite the odds.
Her comments come at a time when India is looking to deepen its export base while navigating an uncertain global economic climate brought about by US President Donald Trump's tariffs and broader geopolitical uncertainties.
Sitharaman reiterated the government's commitment to supporting exporters through improved access to finance and structural reforms. 'The government will give all support to exporters. Every year we have had serious challenges in global trade,' she said.
She pointed out that despite one challenge or another each year, Indian exporters have continued to perform well. 'From COVID in 2020 to the Russia–Ukraine war in 2022, and disturbances due to Hamas in 2023, and the recent tariff war—we have had serious challenges every year to global trade,' she said, highlighting that Indian exporters have upped their game by foraying into new markets and exporting high-tech, value-added products. 'While global exports grew at 4 per cent, India's exporters managed a 6.3 per cent growth,' she added.
'Tech-infused high-end products are getting exported today. India is not just exporting bulk raw goods or commodities. Today, high-standard, well-engineered products are being exported. Indian exporters have also been finding new markets,' she said.
Sitharaman noted that the government has taken five major steps to support exporters. 'The first one is transport and logistics upgrades, which improve supply chain efficiency. Secondly, the government has provided targeted support to MSMEs. Third of the five is trade finance access,' she said.

French tourist raped in Udaipur after being lured from party; accused absconding

JAIPUR A 30-year-old French tourist was allegedly raped in Rajasthan's Udaipur after being lured from a party by an employee of an event management company. The woman, who had arrived in Udaipur from Delhi on June 22, was staying at a hotel in the Ambamata area. On Monday night, she attended a party at a restaurant near Tiger Hills, where she met the accused, identified as Pushp Raj. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused engaged her in conversation and offered to show her around the city. 'He later took her to his rented apartment in Sukher locality, where he raped her,' it said. The victim said she repeatedly asked him to drop her back, but the accusedrefused. Her mobile phone had run out of battery, leaving her unable to call for help. The woman later admitted herself to a private hospital in Udaipur, where hospital staff alerted the police. She filed a formal complaint from the hospital, and a case was registered under Section 64(1) (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Badgaon police station. Police officials stated that the French national is in stable condition and continues to receive medical treatment. The French Embassy in New Delhi has been informed of the incident. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest the accused, who is currently absconding. The Opposition Congress has warned of possible 'international ramifications', especially as the United States has already issued a travel advisory, urging caution to women travellers in six Indian States due to rising rape cases. The Congress stated that Rajasthan may soon be added to such advisories. 'Women feel unsafe' Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the incident had exposed the deteriorating law and order situation in Rajasthan. 'Women across the State feel unsafe, but the Bharatiya Janata Party government remains indifferent,' he said.

Bihar is soul of India and birthplace of its philosophical foundation: Jagdeep Dhankhar

Muzaffarpur, June 24 (UNI) Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar today described Bihar as the soul of India and the birthplace of its philosophical foundation, recalling the state's glorious historical, intellectual, and constitutional legacy. Addressing a public gathering at the foundation day ceremony of Lalit Narayan Mishra College of Business Management here, Dhankhar said, "Bihar was once the global centre of learning, with Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Odantapuri being not just universities, but civilisations." Dhankhar highlighted the significance of Bihar, saying it is the land where Buddha attained enlightenment, Mahavira achieved spiritual awakening, and the philosophical foundation of India was born. He highlighted that ancient knowledge, social justice, and modern aspirations coexist in Bihar, which will fetch global recognition for the country. Referring to the Champaran Satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi, Dhankhar said it turned the issue of farmers into a national cause and introduced a new grammar of governance based on truth, dignity, and fearless service. Dhankhar also spoke about the rich history of Nalanda University, which was a residential university with 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers, attracting scholars from across the world. He lamented the barbaric attacks by foreign invaders on Nalanda, particularly the burning of its library by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1192. Discussing the National Education Policy 2020, Dhankhar said it aims to create skilled professionals, contented citizens, employment generators, knowledgeable humans, and build a country that reflects the collective aspirations of the nation. He emphasised that education in India has always been value-based and character-building, connecting with life values. Dhankhar also referred to the Emergency, terming June 25 as the darkest chapter of Indian democracy when the Constitution was "murdered". He praised Jayaprakash Narayan for lighting the flame of democracy and said the 'Total Revolution' was a call for national reawakening. UNI RS AKT SSP
