Spanish police bust ‘spiritual retreat' offering hallucinogenic drugs
The gang is suspected of operating from a villa in the southeastern town of Pedreguer, charging over 1,000 euros (US$1,160) for multi-day stays that included consumption of ayahuasca, San Pedro cactus and a frog venom known as Kambo.
'The retreats were held in groups of up to twenty participants, who were attended to by six employees of the organization during the 'astral journeys',' the Guardia Civil police force said in a statement.
A photo released by the force showed a large room with several mattresses on the floor, along with water bottles and tissue boxes and a guitar leaned against a wall.
Police say the group held several retreats a week without the means to respond to intoxications, and generated hundreds of thousands of euros in undeclared income last year.
It promoted the retreats online with promises of a 'mystical' experience and health benefits that drew clients 'from around the world, the majority from Europe'.
Police arrested two men and a woman suspected of leading the group and placed five other people under investigation for allegedly acting as 'spiritual guides' at the retreats.
They face charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and criminal association.
Officers seized 11 litres of ayahuasca, 117 San Pedro cactus plants and several bottles of Kambo, an oozy substance harvested from the skin secretions of the Amazonian giant monkey tree frog.
Police said the substances 'can have unpredictable, dangerous effects'.

French police hope for autopsy clues in live-streamed death probe
Nice, France -- French police are hoping an autopsy will help shed light on a 46-year-old man's death during a live-streamed event that a government minister said involved scenes of 'absolute horror,' a prosecutor said Wednesday. Raphael Graven, known online as 'Jean Pormanove' or 'JP,' died on Monday during the event, with internet users saying the footage showed him lying under a sheet while another man threw a plastic bottle at him. Graven had built a following of hundreds of thousands on streaming platform Kick by putting on live shows in which he was abused or humiliated. Police had been questioning witnesses and seizing evidence, including videos, prosecutor Damien Martinelli said in a statement. 'Several interviews with people present at the time of his death have been conducted without yielding leads as to its causes,' Martinelli said, adding that the autopsy would be carried out on Thursday. Internet users said the video, which was widely shared afterwards, showed Graven lying motionless under a bed cover. One of two men in the room with him, known by pseudonyms NarutoVie and Safine, threw a plastic water bottle in his direction. NarutoVie and Safine had already been questioned by police in a separate inquiry in January over claims they were mistreating vulnerable people in online events to generate payments from viewers. Graven was interviewed as a potential victim at the time but denied having suffered any violence, Martinelli said. Instead, Graven and another potential victim told police the events 'were staged and aimed at creating a buzz and earning money,' he said. Graven said he made 'sums of 6,000 euros' generated by his company thanks to contracts with streaming platforms. 'Both said they were never injured, were free to come and go, and to make their own decisions,' the prosecutor said. They also declined a medical and psychiatric examination. Australian platform Kick said Wednesday all co-streamers involved in the event had been banned from the platform pending the outcome of the investigation. It said it was also running a 'complete re-evaluation' of its French content. Man arrested in connection with two shootings in Prince Albert
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in relation to two separate shooting incidents earlier this month. Prince Albert police say the arrest was made on Tuesday outside a business in the 800 block of 15th Street West. ADVERTISEMENT During the search, officers seized three grams of methamphetamine, 32 grams of cocaine, bear spray, $360 in Canadian currency, and other items consistent with drug trafficking. According to police the first shooting occurred on Aug. 3, in the 1600 block of 17th Street West where a 26-year-old man was injured. He was treated by Parkland Ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival. The second shooting occurred on Aug. 12, in the South Hill area. Police say an officer noticed an injured 29-year-old man sitting in the middle of the road on 2nd Avenue West. Shortly after, the officer learned the man had an injury consistent with a gunshot wound. The suspect had fled the scene prior to police arrival. As a result of the investigation, the 19-year-old man has been charged possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm in a reckless manner, attempted murder, forcible confinement, and multiple other firearms related charges. The accused appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court Wednesday morning.
