For the first time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin cancelled the Navy Day parade in his hometown of St Petersburg.
The Navy Day is a Russian national holiday that celebrates the Russian Navy, which has suffered embarrassing defeats in the Black Sea in the war with Ukraine throughout the conflict, including the sinking of its Black Sea fleet's flagship Moskva. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of July, which fell on July 27 this year.

The Kremlin confirmed that the Navy Day parade was cancelled 'on security grounds'.
The cancellation comes amid fears in Russia about Ukraine's drone capabilities, which has been demonstrated in repeated strikes deep inside the country. Earlier in June, Ukraine struck multiple bases deep inside Russia and destroyed a third of Russian long-range bomber and surveillance fleets. Since then, Ukraine has also repeatedly struck Russia's weapons production, energy, and weapon storage sites with drones.

While the main parade of warships was to be held in St Petersburg, smaller parades were also to be held in Kaliningrad region in the Baltic and Vladivostok in the far-east, according to the Associated Press. All of these parades were cancelled.
After the parade's cancellation, Putin visited the navy headquarters in St Petersburg and reviewed the four-day 'July Storm' military exercise that involved more than 150 warships from the Baltics to the Pacific, as per the news agency.
Putin also visited the Admiral Grigorovich frigate of the Baltic Fleet at the Kronstadt naval near St Petersburg and hailed its crew for fending off a Ukrainian drone attack in the region earlier in the day, the report said.

'Genocide in Gaza': Marjorie Taylor Greene becomes first Republican in Congress to use term; rebukes GOP colleague's starvation comment

Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (Image: AP) Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, a prominent supporter of US President Donald Trump and a vocal figure in the MAGA movement, has become the first member of her party in Congress to describe the situation in the Gaza Strip as a "genocide. " Her comments mark a significant departure from the stance held by the vast majority of Republicans, who have consistently voiced unconditional support for Israel. In a post on X Monday evening, Greene said, "It's the most truthful and easiest thing to say that Oct 7 in Israel was horrific and all hostages must be returned, but so is the genocide, humanitarian crisis, and starvation happening in Gaza." Her statement was the strongest in a recent string of increasingly critical remarks about Israel's conduct in the ongoing war, reflecting a growing concern among some on the right over the humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza, reported The New York Times. On Sunday, Greene said, "I can unequivocally say that what happened to innocent people in Israel on Oct 7th was horrific. Just as I can unequivocally say that what has been happening to innocent people and children in Gaza is horrific." Greene's remarks were seen as a direct rebuke of fellow Republican Rep Randy Fine of Florida, who has come under fire for his comments regarding the suffering of Palestinians. Fine had referred to images of starving children in Gaza as part of a campaign of "Muslim terror propaganda" and wrote, "Release the hostages… until then, starve away." Responding to this, Greene in her recent post added, "A Jewish US Representative calling for the continued starvation of innocent people and children is disgraceful. His awful statement will actually cause more antisemitism. F ine, a freshman lawmaker and outspoken advocate for Israel, made the remarks the same day he was appointed to the House foreign affairs committee, a key body that shapes US foreign policy. Fine made his comments before Trump said there was "real starvation" happening in Gaza and made commitments to offer additional support to increase aid. "That's real starvation stuff- I see it, and you can't fake that," Trump said Monday after a series of meetings with European leaders while in Scotland. "We have to get the kids fed." Greene had already begun to pivot prior to Trump's comments, joining a small but growing group within the MAGA movement expressing concern over the war's impact on civilians. Earlier this month, Greene in another statement said, "Israel bombed the Catholic Church in Gaza, and that entire population is being wiped out as they continue their aggressive war in Gaza." That statement followed her unsuccessful attempt to lead a congressional push to strip $500 million in US military aid to Israel, part of the annual defense support package.

Iran gets India's Russian superweapon, tests S-400 missile defence for first time, Israel and US will now...

New Delhi: Nearly a month after the end of the 12-day standoff with Israel, Iran has done something that could reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. Iran has reportedly conducted the first operational test of the Russian-made S-400 air defence system. Iranian defence media outlet has given this information. When did Iran conduct operational test of the Russian air defence system? According to the report, the operational test of the Russian air defence system took place on 26 July 2025 near the city of Isfahan, about 440 km south of Tehran. Isfahan is a strategically important city of Iran, where Israel and the US bombed the Iranian nuclear facility. This is the confirmation of the first actual deployment of the S-400 system on Iranian soil, which regional analysts have described as a clear message to Israel and the USA. Analysts say that now Tehran's airspace will not be easily intruded without paying a big price. Why is this new air defence system a threat to Israel and America? Earlier, during the war in June, Israeli planes claimed to have captured Iran's airspace. Israel destroyed Iran's air defence in air strikes. Even Russia's S-300 air defence system, possessed by Iran, was also targeted by Israeli attacks. But now, after the deployment of one of the world's most advanced long-range air defence systems in the form of S-400, it will not be easy to enter Iranian airspace. Which missile was tested? According to the report of Defense Security Asia, the missile defence system tested appears to be a complete S-400 battery, which includes 91N6E Big Bird acquisition radar, 92N6E Grave Stone engagement radar, centralized command-and-control unit and several 5P85TE2 transporter erector launchers. The missiles reportedly used in the operational exercise include the 48N6E3 missile with a range of up to 250 km, capable of destroying targets at a distance of 380 km. What does Iran say about the test? Although Iran's Defense Ministry has not yet released any official confirmation or footage of the test, OSINT platforms have confirmed abnormal emissions consistent with the S-400 radar profile. Defense Security Asia quoted a defense expert based in the Gulf region as saying, 'The test of the S-400 in Iran indicates a qualitative jump in its ability to prevent enemy access to critical infrastructure and military areas in front of Israeli fifth-generation platforms such as the F-35I.'

Kremlin reaffirms peace efforts after Trump's shortened ceasefire deadline

The Kremlin on Tuesday reaffirmed Russia's commitment to peace in Ukraine following US President Donald Trump's decision to shorten the ceasefire deadline. read more An explosion of a drone lights up the sky over the city during a Russian drone and missile strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine. Reuters Russia is still committed to achieving peace in Ukraine, the Kremlin said Tuesday, in the first reaction to US President Donald Trump cutting his deadline for Moscow to cease fire in the conflict. The US president earlier said he would slash his initial 50-day deadline to 'about 10 or 12 days' and that he was not interested in talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin anymore. 'We have taken note of President Trump's statement yesterday. The SVO (special military operation) continues,' spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, using Russia's term for its offensive. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He also noted a slowdown in attempts to restore ties with the United States after Trump's comments. 'We would like to see more dynamics. We are interested in this. In order to move forward, we need impulses from both sides.' Multiple Russian strikes killed over two dozen people across Ukraine on Tuesday, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman and at least 16 inmates who died in a single strike on a prison. But Peskov said Moscow still remained 'committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and secure our interests.' The latest round of talks between Moscow and Kyiv held last week yet did not yield a breakthrough, but only provided for the exchange of prisoners.
