Kayaking takes centre stage at 11th edition of Malabar River Festival
Akshay Asok from Kerala and Ayyappan Shyam from Karnataka secured second and third places in the men's category, while Oxana Cherevchenko from Ukraine and Aayushi from Madhya Pradesh took second and third spots in the women's category. However, disputes regarding the men's category results have led to them being withheld for now.
Ms. Cherevchenko, who arrived in India as a tourist, was an accidental kayaker. With just five days of training at Kodenchery, she participated in the event and went on to win the second prize. Giovanni Giorgi from Italy, who travelled to Kodenchery from his workplace in Bengaluru, also trained for five days and made it to the quarterfinals.
The festival's rescue team also won the hearts of the crowd on Friday. Due to the high water levels in the Chalippuzha, the preliminaries of the Extreme Slalom event were conducted as a Boater X event—a simpler format. However, the risk of kayaks capsizing or participants facing mishaps remained high.
In addition to the official rescue team led by Bishnu Guru from Nepal, scuba divers from the Fire and Rescue Services were present at the venue, ready for immediate response. Rescue personnel were stationed along the length of the river, from the starting point to the finish line—some in kayaks and others onshore with bamboo poles. Professional kayakers also assisted in ensuring safety. The riverbank was barricaded to prevent public access to the water, and scuba gear, dinghies, and ambulances were on standby.
Earlier in the day, Thiruvambady MLA Linto Joseph inaugurated the event, with Kodenchery grama panchayat president Alex Thomas Chembakasseri presiding over the function. Cultural programmes were held at Pulikkayam in the evening.
The professional segment of the Extreme Slalom competition, which will see participation from many international kayakers, is the highlight of the second day. The Downriver Race/Super Finals will be held at Pulloorampara on the Iruvazhinji river on Sunday (July 27), the final day of the festival.
The Malabar River Festival is organised by the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society and the Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council, with technical support from the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

He dominated his heat with a remarkable score of 14.84 points, surpassing top competitors from across Asia, including the Philippines' Neil Sanchez, who finished with 12.80 points. The journey of the young man, who started surfing the waves of Kovalam and established himself among the top surfers in Asia, is a hope for the adventure sport buffs from the State. The State has recently hosted events like the International Surfing Championship, in Varkala, significantly attracting energetic youth to explore this exhilarating discipline and drawing surfing enthusiasts to Kerala coasts from across the globe. 'Kerala is at the forefront of major events in adventure sports,' Mr. Riyas said, highlighting major events listed on the God's Own Country's tourism calendar. All of these events attract global champions, helping Kerala to emerge as a model for adventure sports in India. They include the Malabar River Festival, which is one of Asia's largest white-water kayaking tournaments; the National Surfing Championship in Varkala; the Paragliding Festival in Vagamon; and the Mountain Terrain Bike Tournament in Mananthavady.

Besides, Amin also played for Surrey CCC (2008) & Buckinghamshire CCC (2007), before serving as the national coach of Norway in 2011. He also served as the head coach of the MCC Foundation from 2013-2017, and before coming aboard the GT setup, Amis was also a coaching Assistant for Sunrisers Hyderabad from early 2018.

Sarthak scores fighting win, Jagathishree scores a grand triple
Pune teenager Sarthak Chavan (Petronas TVS Racing) pulled off a brilliant win, his second in three starts, in the premier Pro-Stock 301-400cc Open category at the Rolon Round of the MRF-MMSC FMSCI National Motorcycle Racing Championship at the Kari Motor Speedway here on Saturday. Starting from third on the grid, 18-year-old Sarthak survived some close calls and contacts with pole-sitter, Hyderabad's Rahil Pillarisetty (RACR Castrol Power1), who eventually finished third behind Chennai teenager Johann Reeves Emmanuel (Motul KTM Gusto Racing India) to win an incident-filled 10-lap race. Later, One Racing's Jagathishree Kumaresan, the 21-year-old from Chennai, won all three races she took part in. The defending champion won both her outings in the Girls' Stock 165cc category of the National Championship and, in between, topped the women's race in the Petronas TVS India One-Make Championship.
