It's official: the world's most beautiful outdoor cinema is in Australia

Time Out16-07-2025
We Aussies are in the thick of winter right now, making it the perfect time to cosy up at the movies with a bucket of popcorn and a box of Maltesers. But here's the good news – we're officially halfway to summer, the unofficial season of outdoor cinemas. Our deliciously balmy summer weather sets the perfect scene for sinking into a bean bag with a prosecco in hand and watching the sun dip below the horizon as a blockbuster lights up the big screen.
But if there's one thing that takes the movie magic to the next level, it's watching the plot unfold in a stunning location. From abandoned train tracks and cemeteries to grand castles and amphitheatres, Time Out's global film editor worked with our travel writers around the world to curate a list of the 30 most beautiful outdoor cinemas on Earth – and four Aussie theatres cracked the list.
Westpac OpenAir, Sydney
Australia is home to loads of breathtaking outdoor theatres, but Sydney's Westpac OpenAir took the crown as the most gorgeous alfresco cinema in the world. With the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge as its backdrop, this floating cinema at Mrs Macquaries Point in Sydney's Botanic Gardens is nothing short of spectacular. The massive 350-square-metre, three-storey-high screen projects everything from the latest blockbusters to vintage classics. While relaxing, you can order a bottle of bubbles to wash down a picnic box or enjoy a bougie dining experience on the site's waterside terrace.
Somerville Auditorium, Perth
Fancy watching a film in a forest? Perth Festival 's Somerville Auditorium has your bark, ranking as the 19th most beautiful outdoor cinema on Earth. From November to April, picnicking crowds sink into deckchairs and beanbags to watch an expertly curated festival programme full of world cinema and arthouse gems. This tradition has been happening since 1953, so it's got some serious cultural clout.
Cameo Outdoor Cinema, Melbourne
Following just behind in 20th place was Cameo Outdoor Cinema in Belgrave, just a 45-minute drive from Melbourne's CBD. Set against the lush backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges, this leafy spot serves up more than just scenic views – the film lineup is top-tier too. Expect everything from Almost Famous to Z, with Hitchcock marathons and even the occasional silent flick. You can even bring your four-legged friend along for the fun!
Sun Pictures, Broome
It's pretty cool that Australia lays claim to the world's oldest outdoor cinema, Sun Pictures, which has been playing films in a gorgeous garden in Broome since 1916. It ranked as the 30th most gorgeous screen in the world and the fourth most beautiful in Australia. Come rain, hail or shine, you'll find a mix of locals and backpackers gathering under the stars for one of two nightly screenings. We hear the house-made choc bombs here are the bomb (sorry, not sorry!).

Sunrise reporter reveals heartbreaking family tragedy during interview with actress Selma Blair: 'I was fifteen'

A Sunrise reporter has opened up about the heartbreaking tragedy that saw her lose her mother. Mylee Hogan sat down with Selma Blair on the breakfast show to discuss the actress' battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) on Monday. Legally Blonde's Selma spoke about the harsh side effects of the illness, such as fatigue and joint pain, as well as the difficulty of juggling the disease with being a single mum to her son Arthur. During the conversation, the Aussie reporter revealed her own personal struggle with the debilitating condition. 'Well, I feel like I wouldn't be honest if I didn't share this, but I lost my own mother to Multiple Sclerosis, so I feel like I have an understanding...' Mylee admitted. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Selma, taken aback, offered her condolences to Mylee in a heartfelt moment. 'I'm so sorry. So you understand the fatigue and mother in bed... Was that so hard for you. Were you so young?' she asked the journalist. 'I was fifteen when she passed away,' she revealed, adding that she understood how hard it was for Selma's son to watch his mum suffer. In April, Selma gave an incredible update on her years-long battle with MS after hitting numerous red carpets with the help of a cane or service dog. The Cruel Intentions star attended The Daily Front Row's 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards where she revealed she is now 'truly in remission'. 'I am doing amazingly well. I've been feeling great for about a year,' she told People at the event held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. 'But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely... I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy and getting out and going out isn't so scary.' Selma was asked what she's looking forward to now that she has her health back and she said she hasn't had any dreams since her diagnosis. In April, Selma gave an incredible update on her years-long battle with Multiple Sclerosis after hitting numerous red carpets with the help of a cane or service dog 'I think maybe since the diagnosis,' she explained when asked what she meant. 'You're just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day.' Blair continued: 'And now it's like, wait, I realise I don't know what my goals are.' She went on to say that her thoughts are 'much more career-oriented' these days and said she'd love to get back into acting and that is something she is actively working on. Blair announced that she had officially been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in an Instagram post that was shared in August of 2018, revealing she 'hurts all the time' because of her illness. Multiple sclerosis is a condition in which the immune system attacks the body and causes nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord. It is an incurable, lifelong condition.

Major international artist set to perform at 2025 Logie Awards alongside Guy Sebastian

A major international performer has been added to the 2025 TV WEEK Logie Awards guest list and will share the stage with one of our own. Richard Marx, who has sold 30 million albums worldwide and is the name behind '80s hits such as What About Me? and Right Here Waiting, will be performing at The Star Sydney on August 3. The singer-songwriter is set to deliver a medley of his iconic hits to Aussie audiences alongside homegrown star Guy Sebastian, who will sing his new track, Get It Done. Richard released a statement following the announcement, revealing that his passionate Aussie fans inspired him to bring 'something special' to his Logies performance this year. 'Australians have always been huge supporters of my music and have brought their passion and infectious energy to my live shows across the decades,' he said. 'It is a privilege to be performing at Aussie TV's biggest night of celebrations. I can't wait to deliver something special for those at home and in the room.' Also on the musical line-up is beloved Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes, who will headline the night with a repertoire spanning four decades of fan favourites. Jimmy, who has 21 number-one albums under his belt as well as a place in the ARIA Hall of Fame, revealed he couldn't wait to 'get the party jumping' at the annual awards ceremony. 'I am excited about playing at the Logies, television's big night of nights,' the 69-year-old said. 'It will be great to celebrate all the fantastic talent we have in Australian television, and to play some rock'n'roll music to get the party jumping.' Richard, Guy and Jimmy will be joined by the likes of Kitty Flanagan, Hamish Blake and Leigh Sales, who are just a few of the presenters expected to wow the crowd. It has also been revealed that Sam Pang will host the event for the third time. Sam's cheeky and irreverent comedy as host last year and in 2023 proved to be a big hit with audiences and TV's A-list, as well as a major ratings winner for Seven. 'It's been an honour to host the last two years and I'm looking forward to again celebrating the talented people and amazing shows that combine to make the Australian television industry something everyone can be proud of,' Sam told The Herald Sun. 'I am very excited to return for another Logies and would like to thank Seven for asking me back.' CHOC SHOCK Shoppers spot new flavour of chocolate Maltesers pouches on shelves with twist on festive favourite Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SHOPPERS have spotted a new flavour of Maltesers pouches on the shelves with a twist on a festive favourite. One user picked up dozens of likes and comments this week for her review of the treat on Instagram after finding a pack of five in a huge supermarket. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The new flavour has not gone down well with one reviewer Several chocolate fans have posted photographs of Maltesers Mini Reindeers Gingerbread Flavour on social media. It comes just days after shoppers spotted White Chocolate Maltesers as part of the meal deal options at Asda. The Mini Reindeers snack is on sale in Asda for £1.80. They are currently out of stock at Tesco and not yet listed at Aldi or Lidl. Another_snack_reviewer described the new pouches as "milk chocolate with a gingerbread flavour malt filling and honeycombed pieces". They added: "Yes, I realise this is a Christmas product and yes I realise it's only July. But I've always said if it's on the shelves then I'm gonna buy it! "I'm a big fan of the reindeer/bunny range (white chocolates are obviously the best) so I was super excited to see a new flavour!" Foodies race to Iceland to get their hands on a giant Maltesers bubble bar that's perfect for a Christmas dessert The review continued: "Unfortunately these didn't quite do it for me. "While the malty, honeycomb flavour was there and the texture was the usual creamy yet crunchy one which I love, the gingerbread just wasn't strong enough against the other elements. "It did come through more in the aftertaste but I still would have preferred it to be a tad punchier." This prompted several responses from other users. One wrote: "Shame as I was so excited for the gingerbread flavour of these" while another wrote: "OMG Christmas food reviews in July? I kid I kid! "If they're selling it, you've gotta review it. "Very sad to hear they aren't that tasty though. I'll stick to my favourite reindeer, the mint one." 'Add the ginger!' Another posted: "Aww nooooo I was so hoping these would be full on gingerbread." A fourth user said: "Just add more ginger, don't know if its a cost saving or worried people would find them too gingery but seriously, people who don't like ginger aren't gonna buy them so people who will buy them clearly like ginger. Add the ginger!" One user lamented: "The saddest news I've heard all week. "Was so looking forward to these as well!" Maltesers' new white chocolate snacks are available at major retailers — but sweet lovers will need to act fast before they sell out. Originally aimed at "dieting women", White Chocolate Maltesers were the white-chocolate version of Maltesers. The key difference between them and the original was that, instead of being covered in milk chocolate, they were covered in a delicious white chocolate coating. Maltesers are round balls of malted milk covered in chocolate. They were launched in 1937 after being created by American Forrest Mars Sr. Maltesers were first released in the UK and were originally aimed at "dieting women" as a "lighter" way to enjoy chocolate. They have since become popular across Europe and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
