ComEd unveils $10 million fund to help Illinois residents with energy costs
On June 1st, ComEd is raising the capacity charge, the cost paid for companies to store extra energy in case of a spike in demand.
According to ComEd, 'Energy prices are driven by supply and demand. Large power generators sell this electricity supply to ComEd and we pass this cost directly to you. Because of factors like extreme weather, spikes from high energy users like data centers, and other factors, demand is outpacing supply, so costs are getting more expensive. Due to these factors, starting in June 2025, the will increase for all ComEd customers.'
Capacity prices are extra payments consumers pay power plant operators to have enough reserve electricity available in the event of a sudden spike in demand.
The Citizens Utility Board estimated each household's bill would go up approximately $10 a month.
However, CUB explained that ComEd will not profit from the price increase, since the cost is passed along to the utility via PJM Interconnect. Utility companies are required to pass supply costs onto consumers.
The Customer Relief Fund will become open to applications starting July 7th.
To lessen the impact of the supply price increase, ComEd recommends practicing energy efficiency at home, considering a community solar deal to help ease costs, or installing solar panels.

CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said he 'can't rule out' a run for President in 2028, during an interview on Meet the Press this weekend. When asked about the possibility by NBC's Kristen Welker, Pritzker responded, 'I can't rule anything out, but what I can rule in is that no matter what decisions I make, and I mean in particular about what I do here in the State of Illinois, is about the people of Illinois.' There has been speculation that Pritzker may seek a higher office and throw his name into the mix for president in 2028. He announced that he would seek a third term as Illinois Governor in June. Pritzker announced former state representative and former deputy governor as his running mate, since Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton is running for the U.S. Senate. Pritzker has emerged as one of the Democrats' most vocal opponents of President Donald Trump. He was to be former Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate in 2024. Pritzker has also done numerous interviews on since Trump was sworn in, increasing his visibility as one of Trump's most vocal critics. Most recently, he welcomed Texas Democratic lawmakers who to prevent a vote on new congressional voting maps. ComEd $10 million Community Relief Fund closes for all applications
ComEd has officially closed its $10 million Community Relief Fund to all applications, with more than half of the money already awarded through one-time grants. ComEd launched the fund in early July as a supplier rate hike drove up electricity bills for ComEd customers. Low- and middle-income customers were eligible for $500 one-time grants for individuals and $1,000 one-time grants for nonprofit organizations. By mid-July, ComEd said they had already received more than 60,000 applications. At the beginning of August, the utility said it received about 77,000 applications in the first three weeks, and have closed the fund to future applications. As of Aug. 5, ComEd said $5.5 million in grants have already been approved for approximately 15,000 residential and nonprofit customers. The utility said those customers should get notification and credit on their electric bills in the next one to two billing cycles. ComEd emphasized they want to work with customers in need of bill assistance in other ways until they launch their Low-Income Discount program, which will help eligible customers get a percentage of their bill discounted based on their income level. ComEd, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Announce 17 Northern Illinois Communities Complete Training to Become 'EV Ready'
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ComEd and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus today recognized a diverse group of communities completing a program designed to help prepare them to accommodate the growth of electric vehicles (EVs) and EV infrastructure. Through their completion of the EV Readiness Program, 17 local governments have demonstrated actions required to create permitting, safety plans and local policies that help make EVs more accessible in communities throughout northern Illinois. 'The EV Readiness Program provides cities and counties across the state with the foundation they need to support EV growth within their communities,' said ComEd President and CEO Gil Quiniones. "The shift to EVs will lower emissions and enhance air quality, key milestones on the journey to building a more sustainable future in Illinois.' The EV Readiness Program was launched by ComEd and the Caucus in 2022 to help prepare municipalities to accommodate the growing number of EVs in Illinois, which includes more than 145,000 currently registered in Illinois today, and the vast majority of them in ComEd's northern Illinois service territory. EV adoption is expected to increase in the future, as the state of Illinois, through its Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), has set a goal of getting to 1 million EVs on the road by 2030.
