Hardwork, determination were clearly visible: PM Modi lauds Indian athletes for strong show at Asian Athletics Championships
Indian athletes won 24 medals, eight gold, 10 silver and six bronze at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, finishing second in the final medal standings behind China.

Over 60 Indian athletes competed at the continental tournament in South Korea from May 27 to 31.
The 26th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships featured over 2000 athletes. Indian athletes participated in a total of 30 medal events - 15 for men, 14 for women and one mixed team - over the five-day competition.
Servin Sebastian won the first medal for India by bagging a bronze in the men's 20km race walk event on the opening day of the competition.
Gulveer Singh won the first gold medal for India in the men's 10000m while Rupal Chaudhary was the first Indian woman to finish on the podium at Gumi with a silver in the 400m. Gulveer Singh also won the gold medal in the men's 5000m.
The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team also successfully defended their continental crown. The women's 4x400m relay team also bagged gold at Gumi.
Jyothi Yarraji successfully retained her women's 100m hurdles crown, finishing ahead of a strong field while Avinash Sable became the first Indian man in 36 years to win a steeplechase gold at the Asian Athletics Championships.
Animesh Kujur (200m) and Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), meanwhile, set new national records in their events.
Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian to win two medals in the decathlon at the Asian Athletics Championships. Tejaswin, who holds the national record in the event, finished with 7,618 points to claim silver, adding to his bronze from the 2023 Championships.
Meanwhile, Ancy Sojan (6.33m) and Shaili Singh (6.30m) finished second and third, respectively, in the women's long jump event.

Irfan Pathan explained how MS Dhoni played a key role in his 2009 exclusion from the Indian team, despite some strong performances. Pathan burst onto the scene as a teenager for the Indian team and proved himself as a trustworthy all-rounder. However, his fairytale run with the side would have an unexpected twist when he was dropped from the team in to Lallantop, Pathan narrated a story from 2009 where he went up to then-India coach Gary Kirsten to ask why he wasn't part of the playing XI for the series against New Zealand. The situation in which we had pulled a win – if it had been anyone else in our place, they wouldn't have been dropped for a year. In that match against Sri Lanka, we needed 60 runs from just 27–28 balls, and we won it from there,' said Pathan.'In New Zealand, I was benched for the first match, the second match, and the third match as well. The fourth match was a draw because of rain. I wasn't in the final match either. Then I asked Gary sir why I had been dropped. If there was something I needed to improve, he could tell me, but I wanted to know the reason I was left out.'Kirsten's two reasonsPathan continued by saying that Kirsten gave him two reasons that led to his omission. The former all-rounder said that the first was because of 'things that were not in his hands' at the time. Pathan said that he understood it was Dhoni who had made the call, as the then-captain made the final call on the playing XI.'Kirsten gave me two reasons. He said, 'There are things that are not in my hand.' Those were Gary's exact words. I asked whose hands it was in, but he didn't tell me. I already knew whose hands it was in. The playing XI is decided by the captain's choice. The decision rests with the captain, coach, and management. Dhoni was the captain at that time. I won't get into whether that decision was right or wrong, because every captain has the right to run the team in his own way,' said former cricketer said that the second reason Kirsten gave was that the team was looking for a batting all-rounder at the time at No.7, a role which went to his brother Yusuf.'The second answer was that they were looking for a batting all-rounder at No. 7. Fair enough — my brother was a batting all-rounder, while I was a bowling all-rounder. The two were different from each other, but there was only room for one in the team. Samson shines with half-century in friendly T20 ahead of Kerala Cricket League
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 16 (ANI): In a high-voltage friendly T20 clash at Greenfield Stadium ahead of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL), Sanju Samson-led Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) Secretary XI pulled off a nail-biting one-wicket victory over Sachin Baby's KCA President XI. On Friday, batting first, President XI posted a competitive 184/8 in 20 overs. Rohan Kunnummal's explosive 60 off 29 balls and Abhijith Praveen's blistering cameo of 47 off 18 balls powered the innings, despite wickets tumbling regularly. Secretary XI's Sharafudheen (3 wickets) and Sijomon Joseph (2 wickets) struck crucial blows to keep the target within reach. In reply, Secretary XI chased down the target in 19.4 overs, finishing at 188/9. Wicketkeeper Vishnu Vinod set the tone with a fiery 69 off 29 balls, while skipper Sanju Samson anchored the innings with 54 off 36 balls. The match went down to the final over, with Basil Thampi smashing a six to seal victory with two balls to spare. The clash showcased top-class performances from Kerala's cricketing stars, giving fans a taste of the excitement building up for the upcoming Kerala Cricket League (KCL). The match took place during the inauguration ceremony of the newly-installed LED floodlights at the Greenfield Stadium.
