Karen Gillan plotting secret directing project with Mike Flanagan

Perth Now16-06-2025
Karen Gillan is working on a secret directing project with Mike Flanagan.
The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star previously worked with the moviemaker on his 2013 horror Oculus and they have reteamed for upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck - and Karen has now revealed she's hoping to step behind the camera to direct "one of my own creations" in a joint venture with Flanagan.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: "Oh gosh, this is going to be so annoying. I can't actually talk about what it is, but I'm teaming up with Mike again on one of my own creations, which is really exciting.
"Something that I will direct for sure, perhaps act in at the same time. I don't know how I do this to myself, but here we are again.
"That will be my main focus next. I have a few other things in development that are my original ideas. It's more of a focus on original stuff right now."
Karen added that she's keen to direct more projects and she also wants to learn how to edit films.
She explained: "What I love and want to do more of is filmmaking - in the sense of creating the story, filming it, directing it, maybe being in it as well, editing it or with an editor.
"I don't know how to edit myself, but being in that part of the process is amazing. That is where I definitely see my career headed now. It feels like I'm in a little bit of a new chapter."
Karen went on to reveal she's taken inspiration from the directors she's previously worked with including Flanagan and James Gunn.
She said: "I've gotten to work with so many directors and so many brilliant ones, so I've taken all kinds of little things that I never would've known about.
"One of the best directors to work with actors that I've experienced is James Gunn. He's so good with actors. He's really respectful of the work that actors do, which really just feels nice.
"He's one of those brilliant football coaches, where he's a different coach to each actor. [That's] an exercise in psychology. Who needs what and when? How do I give it to them? He is absolutely amazing at that."

Lily James is too 'self-conscious' to use dating apps

Lily James feels too "self-conscious" to use dating apps. The 36-year-old Cinderella star plays Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd in new movie Swiped so Lily tried out the app using a friend's account just to get the hang of it, but she admits she wouldn't put a profile online in her search for love would be "counterintuitive" to her desire for privacy. In an interview with Who What Wear magazine, Lily was asked if she is currently single and she replied: "I would never tell." Lily went on to say: "I've never been on a dating app, personally. However, in research for the character, I went on my friend's Bumble account just to get a sense of the app that I'm pretending I created. "One of our producers, Jen Gibgot, met her partner on Bumble. My best friend met her husband on Bumble. You start talking and you realize, like, how many matches, how many babies. "That's the profound effect that these dating apps - Bumble in particular - have had. It's wild." However, Lily is adamant she won't be using any dating apps. She said: "I was always in relationships when the apps started. "Now, I just don't know. I feel a bit self-conscious … I try to stay really private, as private as I can. To be on a dating app feels a bit counterintuitive to that desire." However, Lily is adamant she just wants to enjoy her life now she's in her 30s. She added: "I sometimes read stuff where women are all: 'In my 30s, I suddenly didn't give a f***, and I had it all figured out'. "I'm like: 'Really?' I think the biggest change has been realizing that life is finite. I only want to do stuff that I really care about. "I want to spend time with the people I love. I want to make the most of this wild and crazy life, so I only want to work on stuff that I really love. That's changed." As well as upcoming movie Swiped, Lily will also be seen in a reboot of Sylvester Stallone's 1993 action movie Cliffhanger and she recently admitted she had the "had the time of [her] life" working on the film and she's thrown herself into the sport of climbing. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "Oh my God, I had the time of my life. It was so hard. I did five hours of climbing a day for many weeks. "I was on mountains nonstop. I fell completely in love with it. It's the most mind-body-soul activity. "And I'm a [mountain-climbing] addict now. I did all my own climbing [in the film], and I got real strong. I was just pounding press-ups between every take."

The Breaking Bad star led the cast of the first action movie in 2021 and has returned for a sequel - Nobody 2 - which hits cinemas on Friday (15.08.25) and Bob is adamant he wants to return to the role again in future but he's currently focused on the release of upcoming crime thriller Normal and then wants to take a break from action to focus on comedy. He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I'd do more [Nobody movies]. I'd love to do more of it, but I don't think I'm going to dig right in. "I have another action film called Normal that's coming out [in September], so that's already in the can. "But, right now, I think I want to do some comedy if they'll let me ... " He added: "I would do more [Nobody character] Hutch. I would do a third or fourth [Nobody] film. "It would be about the journey of the family and the tensions that change as you move from one chapter to the next. "You tell yourself: 'This is going to be it now. In Nobody 2, Bob reprises his role as family man and former assassin Hutch, who is seen taking his family on vacation before being drawn back into action-packed drama and the actor admits it was difficult finding he right plot for the second film. He told the publication: "We played around with different stories for Nobody 2, and it was hard to find a story that felt right. "I kept asking myself: 'What is the real reason people liked the first one so much? What is it?' "And I didn't mean the obvious stuff like the fights being good and a little more visceral than what you're used to seeing. "At the core of Nobody was this guy, his family and the tensions within it that all seemed authentic ... "We wanted to have Hutch take his family to a place [called Plummerville], which, in his mind, is the coolest place [from his childhood] ... "We wanted to have that series of disappointments that can happen when you're a parent and you take your kids on this trip that you're so excited about doing. "The unimpressive waterpark is then closed when you get there, and you even booked the wrong hotel rooms. You didn't think twice about putting the two kids in the same room. You just weren't thinking, and you go: 'S***, this is supposed to be fun. F****.' "
