
New Warning Issued As 30 Dangerous Emails Used In Hack Attacks

What's the most dangerous thing you do every day at your computer or smartphone? For most people, I would argue, the answer is checking your emails. It's why the likes of Microsoft have introduced strict new email rules for Outlook users, following in the footsteps of Google doing likewise for those using Gmail. I mean, it's not surprising given that attackers use email as a conduit to password and 2FA code theft, and the FBI is now warning people not to click on anything. Now a shocking new report has revealed the true extent to which the communication threat extends, with a staggering 30 malicious emails a day arriving on average.
On March 15, I reported that threat analysts working at Hornet Security had confirmed its customers were subject to an astonishing 427.8 million dangerous emails during 2024 alone. And that's just one security organization reporting on its own customer base.
The latest Barracuda email threats report, published April 28, doesn't paint a brighter picture, truth be told. If anything, the new analysis just brings the risk your emails present into a brighter light to illuminate the darkness of the email threat landscape.
The key takeaways from the report highlight the problem by the numbers:
Given that, on average, an individual receives some 121 emails each and every day, that equates to around 30 dangerous emails that you need to protect against.
'Malicious email attachments, QR codes and URLs are used by attackers to distribute malware, launch phishing campaigns and exploit vulnerabilities,' Olesia Klevchuk, product marketing director for email protection at Barracuda, said. The failure of organisations to implement DMARC protections, which would otherwise make it much harder for attackers to impersonate their brand and implement fraudulent attacks using malicious emails, isn't helping. 'Organizations need to mitigate the risks by implementing best practice industry standards and adopting a multi-layered approach to email security,' Klevchuk concluded, 'leveraging AI-driven threat detection to spot attacks hidden in attachments and malicious websites.'

Microsoft gives LinkedIn chief Roslansky added role running Office
Microsoft is giving LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky a bigger job, expanding his role to include oversight of Office productivity software, CNBC has learned. Roslansky, who took over LinkedIn five years ago, is becoming executive vice president of Office, reporting to Rajesh Jha, Microsoft's executive vice president for experiences and devices, according to a person familiar with the matter. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella informed employees about the change in an email on Wednesday, said the person, who asked not to be named because the email was internal. In his role as LinkedIn CEO, Roslansky will continue to report to Nadella, the person said. LinkedIn, which Microsoft acquired in 2016 for $27 billion, will keep operating as a subsidiary, after generating more than $17 billion in revenue over the past year. Roslansky joined LinkedIn in 2009 and previously worked at Yahoo. In 2022, Microsoft rebranded its Office 365 productivity software bundle, which includes applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, to Microsoft 365. In addition to overseeing those products, Roslansky's portfolio will also include the M365 Copilot app, which lets users edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Jha's group released the app in 2020. As part of the organizational change, Microsoft said Charles Lamanna, corporate vice president for business and industry Copilot products, and his team will move to Jha's unit. They were previously part of Executive Vice President Scott Guthrie's cloud and artificial intelligence group. Lamanna supervises Dynamics 365 sales and customer service products that compete with Salesforce, as well as the Copilot Studio tool for easily building artificial intelligence agents. In December, Nadella said that AI agents might become the way that people eventually interact with software systems that were designed for use inside large organizations. "When was the last time any of us really went to a business application?" he told investors Brad Gerstner and Bill Gurley on their podcast. He said the company pays for a bunch of cloud software applications, but "we hardly use them and somebody in the org is sort of inputting data into it." "In the AI age, the intensity goes up because all that data now is easy, right?" Nadella said. The company's Productivity and Business Processes segment, anchored by Microsoft 365 subscriptions and LinkedIn, has turned more profitable in the past decade. The unit's operating margin in the fiscal third quarter exceeded 58%, compared with 33% in 2017. Revenue was up 10% from a year earlier.

Dolphin emulator hits a milestone as the full Wii catalog is now playable

The Nintendo Wii catalog is now fully compatible, with the last obscure title fixed. Dolphin emulator has been absolutely spoiling the emulation community for decades, and today yet another update has dropped to make GameCube and Wii emulation even better. Dolphin Release 2506 has a long list of fixes and new features, some of which are game-changing for compatible titles. The first fix has to do with audio stuttering on relatively weak machines. The team explained that user reports of audio stuttering are often due to games running below the target framerate. A new system has been implemented to hide audio hiccups better when frames are lost. Speaking of framerates, another series of fixes targeted frame pacing, which in simple terms is the time between frames. After some investigation, it was discovered that Dolphin suffered from significant variance in frame pacing, which can feel like judder to users who are sensitive to it. After the update, there should be little to no frame pacing issues on any platform. In terms of graphics, new anisotropic filtering options make games appear more similar to playing on a real console. The GameCube and Wii had native support for anisotropic filtering, but it was quite resource-intensive, so developers chose specific textures to apply it to. Dolphin applied to the filter to all or none of the textures previously, but a new option allows you to use the game's default settings, which will apply the filter as developers intended. The final non-compatible Wii game has now been patched to boot in Dolphin. Perhaps one of the biggest additions is the possibility to emulate games beyond 60fps. GameCube and Wii games were designed for analog televisions, with a hard limit of 60fps built into the systems. Thanks to a clever override added in this update, games like Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged can now run at 120fps. Others, like Wind Waker and Super Mario Galaxy, have physics tied to frames, so the hack won't work. Dolphin also hit a major milestone with this update, as it can now boot the full GameCube and Wii catalogs. The final title giving trouble was an obscure Wii game called The Daring Game for Girls, but a new patch finally got it to work. On Android, you can now display your time played for each game. The feature was added in the last major update, so your play times will have started tracking then. However, there wasn't a way to see those times on Android until this update. You can now long press a game tile and tap Details to see how much time you've spent in game. There are a few more minor changes, such as adding support for PS3 Rock Band guitars and Wii Speak without the original hardware, so check out the full patch notes for more details.
