2018 Bulandshahr violence: 38 convicted in inspector's murder, punishment to be announced August 1
The quantum of punishment will be announced on August 1.
Among the convicts are Prashant Nat, David, Joni, Rahul, and Lokendra, who have been found guilty of murdering Inspector Subodh Kumar. All of them are residents of Chingrawathi village under Syana police station area, where the deceased inspector was posted. The remaining 33 accused have been convicted of rioting, violence, and attempt to murder.
The violence had erupted in Mahav village under Syana Kotwali on December 3, 2018, following the discovery of cow remains. Hindu outfits and local villagers staged massive protests, allegedly at the instigation of Yogesh Raj, a key figure linked to a Hindu group. He allegedly mobilised a mob that reached the Chingrawathi police outpost with cattle remains in a tractor-trolley, blocking the highway.

Amritsar: In coordinated operations targeting Pakistan-linked cross-border arms trafficking, Punjab Police on Friday announced the arrest of nine individuals — including a juvenile — and the seizure of 13 sophisticated pistols in a major crackdown on smuggling modules. Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the counter-intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar had dismantled a Pakistan-backed network, arresting five operatives and recovering six pistols — four 9mm Glock handguns and two .30-bore pistols — along with magazines and ammunition. The arrested individuals were Jagroop Singh of Dhun, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke, and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki — all from Tarn Taran district — along with Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar district. Police believe they were acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Rana, tasked with delivering arms to criminal gangs in Punjab to destabilise the sensitive border region. In a separate but parallel development, Amritsar police commissionerate uncovered two more smuggling modules, arresting four more suspects, including a 17-year-old, and seizing seven pistols. Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the weapons haul included two Glock pistols, four .30-bore Star pistols, one .32-bore pistol, six live cartridges, and a motorcycle used for consignment delivery. Those arrested in the commissionerate operation were Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of Bhagwanpura in Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh 'Babbal' (43) of Antaryami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and the unnamed juvenile from Tarn Taran. Preliminary investigations revealed that some suspects lived near the international border and retrieved drone-dropped weapons from designated coordinates. Bhullar said the weapons were linked to gang rivalries and intended to spark unrest. Two of the suspects, Pradeep and Jarnail, were associates of the late gangster Ravneet Singh 'Sonu Mota', who had rivalries with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. "The weapons recovered were supplied by Pakistan-based handlers and handed over to the accused prior to Sonu Mota's death," Bhullar said, adding that the timely seizure had likely prevented a major criminal incident. Nuns' arrest: Pamplany seeks Centre's intervention
Kannur: Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany on Friday criticized Centre over the arrest of two Keralite nuns — Sr Vandana Francis and Sr Preethi Mary — in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a protest meet in Thalassery demanding justice for the nuns, Pamplany said BJP-led Chhattisgarh govt's opposition to the nuns' bail application in NIA court was condemnable and suspicious. "(Union home minister) Amit Shah's words had given us relief. But his words weren't kept in the BJP-led state (Chhattisgarh). Central govt should intervene immediately," he demanded. Communal tensions triggers in Pune's Yavat village, one detained
Communal tensions erupt after mob clashed over a social media post violence in the Yavat village of Maharashtra's Pune district on Friday (August 1, 2025). Pune Rural Police detained the person, who updated the status concerning an alleged rape incident in Madhya Pradesh. According to police, Yavat was peaceful after desecration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue incident, in which two individuals were taken into custody. 'On Friday, the situation erupts over a WhatsApp status. We have taken one person in the custody and start with the process of filing a case,' Special Inspector General (IG) for Kolhapur, Sunil Phulari, adding Section 163 has been imposed and issued a warning to those trying to incite mobs. 'The stones were hurled on the glass windows of cars. Two car windows were damaged, one motorcycle was also torched, one bakery also damaged. One religious prayer place is also damaged to some extent. It was immediately controlled by the local Police officials,' said IG Phulari. The police deployed SRPF and additional police forces to maintain law and order. During the chaos, the two-wheelers and four-wheelers were vandalised. Police also shut down the weekly market in Yavat and did punchnamas (documentation) of damages caused in the incident. The situation is under control and peaceful. Almost all routine affairs are now normalised, informed police. IG Phulari calling the incident 'sudden' stated that strict action will be taken against the few local individuals and outsiders, who were involved. While speaking to media, SP Sandip Gill stated the suspects involved in the vandalism and stone-pelting are yet to be detained. An eyewitness Sameer Sayyed (39) underlined that after the villagers raised objection over the status, the people from both the community visited the accused house and questioned him why you posted it when things are sensitive. Mr. Sayyed, a local businessman, called the incident pre-planned, saying, Police just took him the custody, and, in the meanwhile, mob started coming from everywhere causing the violence. Another eyewitness said the public meeting of MLA Gopichand Padalkar is also one of the reasons for such provocation. On July 31, BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar took a public meeting, wherein he spoke about desecration incident and called it a 'deliberate conspiracy' and urged police to conduct a 'combing operation' in Daund taluka to identify and deport the Bangladeshis or Rohingyas. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed lathi charge was used to pacify the tensions and asked, 'Is it necessary to make post after speeches? If someone is saying the speech is the reason, then it won't be tolerated. Some people are purposely putting status to ignite communal tensions. We will ensure the strict actions.'
