KEMBLA GRANGE INSIDE MAIL
DEEP AFFECTION (6) 's form reads '0000' but hang on; she did run in the Inglis Nursery, a 2YO Open at HQ, the Inglis Millennium and the Sweet Embrace. And what's more, they were actually pretty decent runs up (until the Sweet Embrace, anyway). Trialling well. Could be back in the city again before too long. MILITARY LEGEND (7), the Les Bridge/Bon Ho galloper, made a very creditable debut at Canterbury on July 23. Locals CHOCECLAIR (5) and MOVER AND SHAKER (4) have claims.
BET: DEEP AFFECTION (6) to win.
OMNIC (1) is a son of Proisir who has a win, four seconds and a third on his resume and mostly in much better calibre races than what he might line-up against in today bearing in mind he is nominated for the Farm next Wednesday. TESSY TEE (4) likewise has been a consistent and reliable horse with a win, four seconds and a third from her eight starts. On-pace type who has some very strong form around here.
BET: OMNIC (1) to win or if scratched TESSY TEE (4) to win.
BENDRODT (1) races in the colours of John Muir who bred and raised this son of Exceed And Excel. Now a 4YO, this Chris Waller-trained bay opens his 2025/26 account armed with a resume of six placings from his eight starts, with a good portion of those in town. Trials are good, gets his big chance today. ZOUSTRONG (4) has the home track advantage. Has placed here behind his handy stablemate Commanding Belle. DECALOGUE (7) falls back to a provincial Maiden off a Canterbury maiden where subsequent Kenso winner Sixties was runner-up.
BET: BENDRODT (1) to win.
POUR BENN (1) is a New Zealand bred gelding trained by David Payne who won a VRC Derby among others races with his father, Ace High. Pour Benn was $5.50 into $4.40 when he made his debut here on a Heavy 9 in a mile Super Maiden and battled on as best he could in the conditions to finish fourth. Fitter and smarter perhaps for the experience. HAMMOON HEROINE (4) got to within a half-length of the potentially above-average Patissier and Hurry Miss when she ran third on debut here over 1400m.
BET: POUR BENN (1) to win.
TIP TOP TIMING (6) is a Clarry Conners trained gelding who fronts up today for his 76th start but he's not the first iron-horse, ageless warrior to wear these colours. Anyway, what is more important is that despite the fact he just turned eight and has been around the block, he is actually racing in great form. This is the ideal race for him. Rosehill Midway acceptor IRISH BLISS (2) has some good numbers across the board. CASH ME (1) has to be respected as a last start provincial winner.
BET: TIP TOP TIMING (6) to win.
They don't come much better bred than RUINATION (5). This recently turned 3YO colt is by Wootton Bassett out of Ron Quinton's Coolmore Classic winner Daysee Doom. Ruination is trained at HQ by Michael Freedman who has booked Jeff Penza for the debut and was dealt a winning draw too (3). Speaking of well-bred 3YOs, shout out RIVENDELL (4), a Vinery gelding, by Ole Kirk out of Wayupinsthesky trained by Peter Snowden (of course). Nice trials, nice horse. MISS PEONY (12) is the best long shot of the day IMHO. Top debut here at $61 last month.
BET: RUINATION (5) to win, MISS PEONY (12) each-way.
NOBLE SOLDIER (1) racked up his 50th career start on June 21 when clocking in five lengths behind Lulumon, Storm The Ramparts et al in a Rosehill Benchmark 78. He is back at home at Kembla on Saturday on more or less his preferred surface and given what he has done in the past, he is very well weighted on 60kg. PRETTY SASSY (9) is ready to go but where she goes is anyone's guess; she's accepted for 3 races in 3 venues. KING CHARLES (11) is on a hat-trick. On top of that, he is a local and was a last start t/d winner.
BET: NOBLE SOLDIER (1) each-way.
CES SOIREES LA (6) has accepted for the Mona Lisa Prelude at Wyong on Sunday which says a lot about how she is going right now. Long story short; she is (my) best bet if she comes here and a decent place chance at odds in the small field if she goes to Wyong. If she is out, it would open the door for the flashy mare CAN'T TOUCH THIS (9) who led and won by a pretty comfortable margin in the end in that 1000m Class 1 here on August 1. For the record, she drew barrier 3 and had Jeff Penza on, it's Penza again and box 2 today.

The Metropolitan hopeful Deep Focus to launch campaign in no-metro-win race at Eagle Farm

Trainer Paul Shailer has Group 1 The Metropolitan dreams for Deep Focus during the Sydney spring carnival, but will kick off his campaign with the low bar of a no-metro-win race at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Deep Focus has been gelded since last being seen finishing sixth in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), less than three lengths from the winner Maison Louis. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! There is little doubt he is a promising stayer and it would be doubtful he would be competitive at less than a mile at Group or Listed level. However, don't be surprised if he is powering over the top of them in Saturday's No Metro Wins Handicap, even though 1400m is well short of his best. Gold Coast-based Shailer thinks Deep Focus is twice the horse on a rain-affected track and there is every chance that is what it will be at Eagle Farm on Saturday. It is a starting point to what Shailer hopes will be a crack at the Group 1 The Metropolitan over 2400m at Randwick in early October. There were some wise words of wisdom from his former boss Chris Waller that have formulated a blueprint for Deep Focus to race in Sydney during the spring, rather than heading to Melbourne on a Caulfield Cup campaign. 'Saturday it is a very suitable race for him, he looks pretty well placed doesn't he?' Shailer said. 'He has to come up well, but our plan is to get him to Sydney. 'Our grand final this preparation, all going well with the horse, will be The Metropolitan in Sydney. 'I sought advice from Chris Waller on this. 'He was more than happy to have the conversation with me, he said he would be taking him to Sydney and not to Melbourne. 'A lot of Queensland Derby horses seem to end up running in the Caulfield Cup. 'But we have tried to go the opposite way. 'What is the weaker Group 1 mile-and-a-half race at handicap conditions? I believe it is the Metrop.' Shailer has nominated Deep Focus for a midweek race at Ipswich this week but instead kept him for Saturday as he was 'waiting for the rain'. Deep Focus's race on Saturday presents a big opportunity for jockey Dylan Turner. The Townsville Cup-winning jockey recently bared his soul to Racenet and revealed how he had been worried he was becoming an alcoholic, but had turned his life around and hadn't touched a drop of alcohol in months. With Shailer's main go-to jockey Michael Rodd out injured, and with Ryan Maloney riding in Melbourne and Andrew Mallyon in Sydney on Saturday, Turner gets his chance on Deep Focus at Eagle Farm. 'Dylan has been riding very well and he has been putting in a lot hard work at my stable,' Shailer said. 'Also, my top three first-choice riders are not available. 'But Dylan rides Deep Focus every day and is very familiar with them and he's also won on him. 'I am more than happy to reward him with the ride.' Deep Focus opened an $11 chance when TAB fixed odds put up their market, but on Thursday had trimmed into $9.

Ferivia owner Gary Brook will be cheering from Birdsville as promising filly takes next step towards Group 1 Thousand Guineas

The Brook family who hail from Birdsville will be at the iconic desert track when their latest good horse, exciting three-year-old filly Ferivia, takes her next step towards a potential Group 1 Thousand Guineas onslaught. Phillip Stokes -trained Ferivia, who races in the emerald green and white colours of the Brook family’s “Saddlers Knifeâ€ syndicate, won in slashing fashion when scoring the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday. Gary Brook, the vice-president of the Birdsville Race Club, said the filly’s next race is set to be in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 6. It’s the same day as the Birdsville Cup, the famed outback race that the Brook family has won seven times including twice in recent years with Neodium (2023 and 2024). “To be honest, it was intended that Ferivia was going to go to the paddock after last Saturday’s run,â€ Brook said. “But she has pulled up really well and the Thousand Guineas is certainly not out of the question. “She will go next to the Atlantic Jewel at Moonee Valley on Birdsville Cup day. “We won’t be going to that race in Melbourne, we have got important things to do in Birdsville. “We will be at Birdsville cheering very loudly.â€ Ferivia splits the middle and wins the Quezette! @LNeindorf grabs a Group 3 at Caulfield after making the move back to MelbourneðŸ' @pstokesracing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) August 16, 2025 The Brook family has had plenty of good horses over the years and has also been the driving force behind the Birdsville Cup, with Gary’s dad David the president of the race club which is situated on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Saddlers Knife is the family cattle brand and also the syndicate that races horses under Saddlers Knife Racing. The Brook family has been involved with racehorses for three generations, with Gary’s grandfather Bill a Birdsville Cup winning jockey. While the family is excited about Ferivia’s potential, they won’t have a runner in the Birdsville Cup this year. T-23 days to the @birdsvilleraces - I’m excited. — Gary Brook (@GaryBrook18) August 13, 2025 • Stokes-trained grand warrior and Birdsville Cup dominator Neodium has been retired. “We thought it was probably time to retire him, he was eight when he was retired, albeit he was fairly lightly raced,â€ Brook said. “We probably would have been keeping him going just for another Birdsville Cup, so we thought it best to give him a nice retirement. “Ferivia looks to have really good talent and she is probably unlucky not to be undefeated. “To win the way she did last Saturday and to weave through the field, when she was probably hard ridden at the 500(m), it was a terrific win. “We think she will be better over further distance and be better when the ground is harder as well.â€ Gary Brook now lives in South Australia with his family but is already making preparations for the two-day road trip to the famous Birdsville carnival early next month. Question for the @punters. Which winning form do you prefer for the Birdsville Cup? Hettinger (12L Katherine Cup), Without Revenge (4L Nanango Cup), Testator Silens (2L Longreach Newmarket), Three Gongs (0.4L Gladstone Cup)? @birdsvilleraces @Racing @RaceQLD — Gary Brook (@GaryBrook18) August 19, 2025 He said field sizes should be bigger and the races stronger than last year. “I will get to Birdsville on the Sunday before, I will have to travel a bit further than normal with some of the road closures in South Australia and I will drive up there with my wife, our three kids and a dog,â€ Brook said. “In terms of horse numbers, they are looking really strong and I would be stunned if we didn’t have double the runners of last year. “Over 20 different stables have indicated they are coming. “ Hettinger, who won the Katherine Cup by 12 lengths, is on its way down.
