Chinese man held in Italy on US warrant claims mistaken identity

Indian Express10-07-2025
A Chinese man arrested in Italy on a US warrant over alleged industrial espionage has opposed extradition, claiming he is a victim of mistaken identity, his lawyer said on Tuesday. Xu Zewei, a 33-year-old IT manager at a Shanghai company, appeared on Tuesday before an appeals court in Milan, which will decide whether to send him to the United States.
The man was arrested last week (July 3) after he arrived at Milan's Malpensa airport for a holiday in Italy with his wife. US authorities allege that he was part of a team of hackers who in 2020 hacked and otherwise targeted US-based universities, immunologists, and virologists conducting research into COVID-19 vaccines, treatment, and testing. The US Justice Department says a research university located in the Southern District of Texas was also targeted.
'He told the judge that he had no reason to do what he is accused of and suggested that someone may have hacked into and used his account,' his lawyer Enrico Giarda told reporters at the end of the hearing, which was held behind closed doors. The lawyer added that his client said his surname is quite common in China and that his mobile phone had been stolen in 2020.
'We are now waiting for the US authorities to send us the investigation files so that we can understand how they came to identify him as the perpetrator,' Giarda said, adding that Washington has 40 days to send the documents.
The lawyer specified that they plan to request house arrest, but only at a later stage.
In the meantime, he said he expects the next hearing to be scheduled after the summer break. The charges listed on the arrest warrant are wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and unauthorized access to protected computers.

Delhi Police arrest 2 interstate ATM robbers after tracking them for 6 months

The Delhi Police Special Cell Thursday night arrested two interstate ATM robbers from Haryana's Mewat after a brief exchange of fire near the Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Pusta road. According to the police, Sazid and Adil were wanted in multiple cases of ATM break-ins and arms trafficking across several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, and West Bengal. Acting on a tip-off, the Special Cell team laid a trap following six months of surveillance and groundwork. At around 10 pm, the suspects were spotted riding a motorcycle to Madanpur Khadar. When flagged down by the police, the suspects allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the police. The police team returned fire, allegedly in self-defence, leading to the motorcycle skidding and both accused falling. Despite warnings to surrender, the suspects again opened fire and were overpowered after a second round of exchange, said the police. The police recovered two semi-automatic bore pistols with ammunition, along with the stolen motorcycle and Rs 48,500 in cash, which was identified as the amount recently looted from an ATM break-in in Siliguri in West Bengal on the night of July 22-23, said the police. The police revealed that they had been tracking the duo ever since the Special Cell had arrested another Mewat-based criminal named Jamshed. According to the police, Jamshed was responsible for killing a Head Constable in 2012. During his interrogation, Jamshed had allegedly disclosed that he had bought the gun that killed H C Yashpal from Sazid and revealed that Sazid and his associates were involved and wanted in multiple ATM robberies of different states. 'It was learnt that Sazid, along with his Mewat-based associates, used to go to different states by truck. They carry the tools including a cylinder for cutting the ATM in the truck. Upon reaching their target destination, they would steal a vehicle to commit an ATM robbery and conduct a reconnaissance of the area to identify an unguarded ATM kiosk. After robbery, they would abandon the vehicle and then disperse and return to their base by different modes or routes,' said Amit Kaushik, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell. Sazid, 23, a resident of Nangla Utawad in Mathura, had previously been arrested by the police in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Punjab for ATM-related crimes. After his name surfaced during an ATM robbery probe in Mathura, he shifted base to Nuh to evade arrest, said the police. He is currently wanted in ATM robbery cases in at least five states. His accomplice, Adil, 27, hailing from Azizabad in Palwal, Haryana, was also allegedly involved in ATM loot cases. He is wanted in connection with an ATM robbery in Gujarat in 2024, said the police.

'No objection': Pakistan's Ishaq Dar shifts stance on US designating TRF as terror group post meet with US' Marco Rubio

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar seemed to shift his stance on the United States (US) move to designate The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). Dar said at an event in Washington, DC on Friday that Pakistan has "no issue" with the US designation; however, he reiterated that linking TRF with Lashkar-e-Taiba is "wrong." The Resistance Front – which India and the US believe is an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) – claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The Pakistan minister said it is "obviously a sovereign decision" of the US to designate the TRF. "We have no issue. And we welcome, if they have any evidence, that they are involved," he said. 'Linking the TRF to the Lashkar-e-Taiba is wrong. That outfit was dismantled years ago by Pakistan. The actors were prosecuted, arrested and jailed, and the entire outfit was destroyed,' said Dar. "So, if it [TRF] is an independent US authorities have any evidence that they were involved [in Pahalgam attack], we have no objection to that," Dar said. "I can guarantee you that it is this TRF has nothing to do with the LeT, which has become defunct years ago," he added. This statement was seen as a significant shift from his previous position. Earlier, Dar told Pakistan's Parliament that Islamabad had blocked mention of the TRF in a UN Security Council Resolution which condemned the Pahalgam attacks. 'We opposed the mention of TRF in the UNSC statement. I got calls from global capitals, but Pakistan will not accept. TRF was deleted, and Pakistan prevailed," said Dar was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying in April. He reported added, "We don't consider the TRF illegal. Show us proof they carried out the Pahalgam attack. Show ownership by the TRF. We won't accept the allegation, and TRF had to be deleted from the UN press release." Ishaq Dar meets Marco Rubio Earlier on Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar at the Department of State in Washington, DC. 'Met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister @MIshaqDar50 today to discuss expanding bilateral trade and enhancing collaboration in the critical minerals sector. I also thanked him for Pakistan's partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability,' Marco Rubion Ishaq Dar said on Friday the United States and Pakistan were "very close" to a trade deal that could come within days, but comments from the US after Dar met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned no timeline.

The woman, a resident of Burari, reported that she was unemployed and was lured into the fake work-from-home task scam via Telegram. She was tricked into performing bogus online tasks and making repeated UPI payments under the pretext of earning commissions. She also learned that fraudsters had illegally accessed her mobile number and identity credentials to obtain personal loans worth Rs 8.8 lakh from two reputed banks without her knowledge, police said. During investigation, it was found that the cheated amount was funnelled into mule accounts, converted into cryptocurrency, and laundered via a Telegram-based network of crypto buyers, officials said. He also introduced the accused, Gaurav (residing in the neighbourhood), who further brought in the accused, Manthan, a 19-year-old youth who knowingly provided his bank account for processing large sums of money on the inducement of petty commissions, police said.
