Imran's bail plea hearing cancelled as judge goes on leave

Islamabad, June 12 (UNI) Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan expressed hope for the early release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi in the 190 million pounds case, which was cancelled after a judge went on leave.
Justice Mohammad Arif, a member of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) division bench, went on leave, due to which the case was dropped from the cause list.
Senior PTI members went to IHC, met officials in the chief justice's secretariat to ask for rescheduling for hearing. The court fixed June 26 for hearing the plea, seeking suspension of sentence, Dawn reported.
PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the Natio¬nal Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and Imran Khan's sister Aleema Khan, were among the PTI leaders who went to the Islamabad High Court.
Talking to the media, PTI chairman expressed his disappointment over the delay, and hoped for Imran Khan's early release.
'The judge was on leave, so the case could not be heard today. But the day is not far when the PTI founder would walk free,' he told Dawn.
He also highlighted the sharp decline of Pakistan's position in the Rule of Law index, which is now 129, down from 97 in 1996.

Bar bodies urge Pakistan SC to revisit May 7 judgment on military trials of civilians

Islamabad: The Lahore High Court Bar Association and Lahore Bar Association have asked the Supreme Court to revisit and set aside the May 7 judgment on military trials of civilians , a media report said on Saturday. The two separate petitions filed on Friday are the second set of such challenges following an earlier petition submitted by former chief justice of Pakistan Jawwad S Khawaja , the Dawn newspaper reported. In his petition, the former CJP highlighted that if not overturned, the May 7 verdict will serve as a constant reminder of ceding judicial space to the executive by accepting that it can act as judges to try civilians in criminal cases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kulkas yang belum Terjual dengan Harga Termurah (Lihat harga) Cari Sekarang Undo On May 7, a five-judge Cons-ti-tu-tion Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) had restored key provisions of the Pakistan Army Act that allow the trial of civilians in military courts. The court ruled by a 5-2 majority in favour of overturning its earlier decision from October 23, 2023, in which the earlier five-judge SC bench had held the military trial of civilians as illegal and unconstitutional. Live Events Riots broke out on May 9, 2023, as supporters of jailed former premier Imran Khan had allegedly vandalised public property and attacked defence installations in the country as they protested the arrest of the 72-year-old party founder. The review petitions urged that the May 7 judgment was passed in contravention of the Constitution and laws of Pakistan. Last month, a Pakistani court sentenced 11 supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including a lawmaker, for violent protest in the capital on May 9, 2023. Those convicted included member of the National Assembly Abdul Latif, who was elected from Chitral area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier, in December 2024, military courts had sentenced 85 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during the riots on May 9, 2023. Khan has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases.

Tej Pratap Yadav faces probe for entering Kashi Vishwanath temple's restricted ‘Red Zone'

Tej Pratap Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad's son, has courted controversy over a visit to the Kashi Vishwanath temple Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, where he allegedly stepped inside the restricted 'Red Zone'. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple administration has ordered an investigation over a video circulating on social media purportedly showing the former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple's restricted 'Red Zone', according to a news agency PTI report. The red zone, where mobile phones are not permitted, refers to the area within the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor that also includes the temple premises. The video showing Tej Pratap Yadav inside the temple premises is doing rounds on social media since Thursday, officials said. Kashi Vishwanath CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra said that the temple administration recently got to know of the video through social media platforms and various newspapers. The temple administration said information has been shared with the CRPF and the local police, which are responsible for the temple's security. "Information has been sent to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take action against the responsible personnel of the concerned agency," PTI quoted Mishra. "Both agencies have been requested to ensure strict adherence to the prescribed rules and guidelines within the temple premises. Their investigation will also verify the authenticity of the content circulated on social media and identify any personnel found to be at fault. If any violation of rules is found at any level, appropriate legal action against the concerned individuals, " Mishra added. Tej Pratap had hit headlines a few weeks ago as well when RJD president expelled him from the party, besides declaring that he "shall have nothing to do with the family", after a photo of him with a woman went viral. The move came on May 25, a day after Tej Pratap Yadav's Facebook post announced that he was "in a relationship for 12 years" with a woman, despite being married and his divorce petition still pending before a family court here. He, however, deleted the post a few hours later, claiming on X that his Facebook page was "hacked."

Tripura BJP stages rallies protesting attack on Tagore's ancestral house in Bangladesh

BJP state vice president Subal Bhowmik and general secretary Bhagaban Das led the protest rally near Agartala Integrated Land Customs Station condemning the attack on Tagore's ancestral house in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh. Thousands of party leaders, workers and supporters, holding party flags, participated in protest rallies in all the ten organisational districts of the state and raised slogans against the interim government in the neighbouring country for failing to protect the historic structure. Agartala, Jun 14 (PTI) The Tripura unit of the BJP on Saturday staged protest rallies across the state protesting the attack and vandalisation of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral house in Bangladesh. 'We took out rallies in all the organisational districts of the party, condemning the attack by fundamentalist groups. Under Muhammad Yunus, a chaotic situation has been created in Bangladesh and minorities are facing hardships,' Das told reporters. 'The attack on Tagore's ancestral house is an attack on Bengali heritage and our identity. If such attacks continue, we will launch massive protests in future,' he said. The party's media in-charge, Sunit Sarkar, said that under the Yunus regime, it appears fundamentalists have a free run in Bangladesh. 'The attack on Tagore's ancestral house is a glaring example of how fundamentalists have become active in the neighbouring country. The BJP will not remain silent if such a situation continues to prevail,' he said. Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, 'How do we expect that a nation, which could not show respect to its father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will tolerate Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore?' 'The library of Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya at Comilla was vandalised senselessly by fundamentalist groups. We strongly condemned the attack on Tagore's house. They forget that Bangladesh's national anthem is Tagore's creation. They should show him some respect,' he said. PTI PS ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
