Onion soup flows from tap at Hokkaido's Memanbetsu Airport

The Mainichi06-07-2025
OZORA, Hokkaido -- A tap dispensing onion soup recently debuted at Memanbetsu Airport in this Hokkaido town. When turned on, the faucet releases warm soup made with locally grown onions.
According to operator Hokkaido Airports Co., this is the first airport in Japan to install an onion soup tap.
Visitors to the airport can now enjoy "Hokkaido Onion Soup," a signature product of food company Greens Kitami, from the tap. The company processes the "Kitami onions" grown in the area -- known as the largest onion producer in Japan. These onions accounted for 46% of national onion production in 2023.
Hokkaido Airports came up with the project to promote local specialties in a unique way and prepared for the tap's launch in collaboration with Greens Kitami. Yuta Maruyama from Greens Kitami stated, "We want people to enjoy the excitement, and hope it promotes Japan's leading onion-producing region."
In a corner set up in the airport's departure lobby on July 1, tourists and local residents who came to see off travelers turned on the tap to enjoy the soup. A woman in her 20s from the nearby city of Kitami, the first to try it, said, "It's fun and very delicious." Wataru Yoshimura, 32, a company executive visiting with his family from Osaka, commented, "I'm not fond of onions, but this soup is tasty. It makes me want to come back."
The soup is available on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and two times each day on weekends and holidays, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., until supplies last. Hokkaido Airports' Kumi Inui, who was involved in the project, commented, "I hope the onion soup tap becomes a fun memory of people's trips."

Falcons lose starting WR Darnell Mooney for several weeks with shoulder injury and sign D.J. Chark

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Darnell Mooney's status for the start of the season is uncertain as the Atlanta Falcons' second-leading receiver in 2024 is expected to miss several weeks of training camp with a shoulder injury. Mooney suffered the injury in Thursday's first practice of training camp. The Falcons bolstered their depth chart at wide receiver by signing veteran D.J. Chark Jr., who joined the team for Saturday's practice. Chark worked out for the Falcons on Friday. 'That workout was already set up,' Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith said Saturday, referring to the visit from Chark being scheduled before Mooney's injury. Smith said Mooney's injury is 'part of the deal' and the front office is 'always ready to find solutions and add to the roster whenever we can.' Smith provided no details on the severity of Mooney's injury. Chark, 29, began the 2024 season on injured reserve with a hip injury and was limited to four catches for 31 yards with one touchdown in seven games with the Los Angeles Chargers. Chark, a second-round draft pick by Jacksonville in 2018, set career highs with 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jaguars in 2019. Following four seasons with Jacksonville, Chark played for Detroit in 2022 and Carolina in 2023. Mooney had 64 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns in 2024. Drake London led the team with 100 receptions for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns. London, Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud III opened training camp as Atlanta's top wide receivers. KhaDarel Hodge returns as a top backup after starting two games last season. The injury will force Mooney to miss valuable practice time with second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is entering his first full season as the starter following a three-game audition to close the 2024 season. ___ AP NFL:

Report – Inter Milan Still Hoping To Sign Parma Star In Player + Cash

Inter Milan are reportedly still hoping to sign Parma defender Giovanni Leoni for an offer of Sebastiano Esposito plus cash. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. For the last several weeks, Inter have been heavily linked with Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. Reportedly, the 19-year-old is the player the Nerazzurri see as ideal for the long-term future of their defense. Furthermore, the fact that Leoni had worked with coach Cristian Chivu last season has further bumped him up Inter's list of targets. However, the price tag for Leoni would be quite high. Reportedly, Parma are holding out for as much as €40 million to sell the teenage defender. (Photo by) Naturally, that €40 million valuation is a big hurdle for Inter in their efforts to sign Leoni. However, the Nerazzurri are hoping that they can lower that fee. Inter's idea would be to include striker Sebastiano Esposito in an offer. The 23-year-old is a player who Inter value at around €7 million. The fact that his contract runs out at the end of June restricts how much they could realistically get for him. Fiorentina and Cagliari are keen on Esposito. However, neither have managed to make a deal for the striker yet. Therefore, reports the Corriere dello Sport, Inter are aiming to potentially use Esposito as a makeweight in a deal for Leoni.

Boy dies after being ‘left in hot car by child services driver shopping for tobacco'

A three-year-old foster child has died in Alabama after a driver employed by local children's services left him alone in a hot car for around five hours. The boy has been named by Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Kettorius 'KJ' Starks Jnr of Bessemer. He was found in the vehicle parked on a driveway with its windows rolled up, on Tuesday, July 22, reports. Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates stated the boy is believed to have been left alone in the car from 12.30pm until around 5.30pm when he was discovered. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 6.03pm. Local temperatures reached around 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35C) on Tuesday afternoon, but the National Weather Service states it would have felt as high as 103 degrees (39.4C) by 1pm, taking into account the high humidity. The boy's aunt Brittney Debruce said he was living in a foster home and was under the care of Alabama's Department of Human Resources at the time of his death. Ms Debruce stated that a transport driver working as a contractor for the children's services department has picked the boy up from daycare and took him for a planned visit with his father in Bessner. After the visit, the driver is said to have alleged to purchase groceries and tobacco before parking the vehicle on the driveway of his home. The alarm was raised when Kettorius' foster carer went to pick him up from the daycare facility and found he wasn't there. Ms Debruce stated that she and Birmingham Police later found the child inside the car. The boy's mother was informed of the tragedy and the family are said to have been left devastated. "We don't know what's going on," Debruce added. Kettorius's parents issued a statement and described the situation as their "worst nightmare," adding: "Our baby should be alive." Birmingham police are investigating the child's death. In a statement, Alabama's Department of Human Resources said: "A child in DHR custody was being transported by a contract provider when the incident occurred. The provider has terminated their employee. Due to confidentiality, DHR cannot comment further regarding the identity of the child or the exact circumstances." The driver that picked up Kettorius worked for a company called The Covenant Services, that was contracted to carry out transport services. The Debruce family attorney Courtney French said: "This is a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy."
