Reading Prison: Audience allowed inside jail for theatre event

"We hope that our work paves the way for other artistic ventures to take place inside this extraordinary historical site."Oscar Wilde spent two years at the prison after being convicted in 1895 of gross indecency - effectively for being gay.He spent the last three years of his life in exile in France, where he composed his last work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, describing an execution at the prison.

'Fantastic' BBC period drama epic about real life rivalry ‘nobody has done before' lands this month
The BBC's upcoming big budget period drama epic King & Conqueror stars James Norton and has been branded a 'must watch' for fans of The Last Kingdom and The Winter King. New teaser pictures have been released of the much anticipated new period drama from the BBC. King & Conqueror is coming to screens this August bank holiday, and tells the story of how William the Conqueror ascended the English throne after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Set in 11th-century Britain, the show stars James Norton, Eddie Marsan and Juliet Stevenson, exploring how the future King of England Harold Godwinson and William, Duke of Normandy, came to be such bitter rivals. The ambitious production will take viewers back to the period running up to the Battle of Hastings, which saw King Harold II brutally killed by William the Conqueror's invading forces. Norton and Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Walda play the famous feuding leaders in the eight-part series, brought by The Frankenstein Chronicles writer Michael Robert Johnson and Everest director Baltasar Kormákur. The BBC synopsis reads: "King & Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea. "Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the English throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown." American in UK tries fish and chips but is told they've 'made a mistake'

At Harry Ramsden's, she ordered a large cod with a regular portion of chips, gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce. Firstly, she took a bite of the fish, describing the flavour as "incredible" before dipping some into the gravy, mistakenly thinking it was meant for the fish and not just the chips. Finding the combination "unique", she then sampled the curry sauce with the fish, confessing: "I've never heard of curry and fish and chips but I'm gonna try it anyway." Wrapping up her review, Sarah enthused: "Okay this tastes nothing like California fish and chips so this is fantastic. "I'm giving Harry Ramsden a ten out of ten. This is phenomenal." Harry Ramsden's, a renowned fast food chain in the UK, is famed for its fish and chips. Its Bournemouth branch, situated on the seafront, boasts seating for up to 420 diners. While the restaurant 's signature dish is fish and chips, it also offers a variety of other options, including wholetail scampi, a selection of beef, chicken, cod or halloumi burgers and a classic caesar salad. Sarah's TikTok video has sparked more than 1,900 comments, with several viewers suggesting she should have avoided Harry Ramsden's. A local from Bournemouth commented: "I'm from Bournemouth, this is the worst fish and chips you can get. It's a chain restaurant, so many better places to go, always go local. Total tourist trap." Another viewer agreed: "Harry Ramsden's is a chain though, it's even better from an independent chippy." A third chimed in: "I hate to tell you this but Harry Ramsden's is the worst fish and chips going, it's a chain. Try Lakeside in Poole, if you're still in the area! It's the best." A fourth remarked: "Harry Ramsden's is not the best way to try British fish and chips as they're a chain." However, one Harry Ramsden's fan defended the chain: "I went to the exact same restaurant twice a couple of weeks ago because it was sooo good."
