Sevilla sleep at training ground after 'violent attacks'

BBC News11-05-2025

Sevilla's first team were forced to spend the night at their training facility on Saturday evening after they were met with "violent attacks" by supporters.A statement released by the club strongly condemned "organised vandalism" at the Jose Ramon Cisneros Palacios training complex after Sevilla's 3-2 loss at 10-man Celta Vigo.Footage on social media appears to show a large group of supporters chanting outside of the facility with pyrotechnics, while another shows them tearing down the gate to the entrance of the training ground.Players and staff of the La Liga side were forced to stay inside the building following their arrival back from Vigo.Sevilla added that the club "will pursue the public naming of employees and the dissemination of private data on social media and in the media, acts that constitute criminal offenses".Defeat in Vigo left Sevilla 16th in La Liga, six points above the relegation zone with three games left to play.
The La Liga side, who won the Europa League in 2020 and 2023, said they will report the attacks and vandalism and will do "everything in its power to assist in the pursuit of the perpetrators of these crimes". The statement said the club "will try to help identify those involved in these actions and will act relentlessly in the event that they are Sevilla FC fans".The club acknowledged their poor season on the field and accepted protests but "under no circumstances will they be tolerated if they are accompanied by aggression, threats, or acts of vandalism".Winless in their last eight, Sevilla play relegation rivals Las Palmas on Tuesday in a huge game before hosting Real Madrid and rounding the season off with a trip to Villarreal.

‘This club is addicted…' – Tottenham fans all say the same thing after controversial Ange Postecoglou sacking

TOTTENHAM FANS have slammed the club as a "disgrace" for sacking manager Ange Postecoglou. The Australian manager was axed by Spurs today despite leading the club to their first trophy in over 17 years with Europa League success this season. 3 A club statement claimed that the unanimous decision to sack the 59-year-old was one the "toughest" the board has had to make. Adding: "Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph." But fans have been left less convinced that moving Postecoglou on was the right decision, with the announcement sparking fury on social media. One fan wrote: "Absolute disgrace!!" While another added: "What an absolute joke of a football club". A third simply fumed: "DISGRACE." A fourth posted: "This club is addicted to self-sabotage. Embarrassing. Thanks Ange, for reminding us what it's like to actually win something." And a fifth wrote: "Stunned, and incredibly disappointed." 3 Postecoglou, who had recently teased a third season in charge, released a statement to the fans after his dismissal. The farewell message read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. Later adding: "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success." Tottenham told fans in a statement that "news on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course". It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' Brentford manager Thomas Frank is currently thought to be the front-runner to take over from Postecoglou. Frank has become one of the Premier League's most highly rated managers thanks to his work with the Bees. However, Fulham boss Marco Silva is also thought to be in the frame for the North London club. Hiring Frank could prove costly business, with the Dane's release clause believed to be around £10million. Reports had already claimed Spurs will have to fork out £4million in compensation to dismiss Postecoglou, with that figure coming on top of the £2million bonus he earned for winning the Europa League.

Tottenham fans all say the same thing after Ange Postecoglou is sacked despite winning the club's first trophy in 17 years

Tottenham Hotspur fans have paid emotional tributes to Ange Postecoglou after the Australian was sacked by the club. Spurs supporters rushed to social media to express their gratitude to Postecoglou for giving them the 'best night of their lives' after he guided the north Londoners to Europa League victory last month - their first piece of silverware since 2008. Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the game against Manchester United in Bilbao as Spurs lifted their first European trophy in 41 years. The victory means that despite enduring a miserable domestic campaign, with the club finishing in 17th place, they will compete in next season's Champions League. Pressure was building on the 59-year-old throughout the season but he silenced critics by ending Tottenham's trophy drought. He hinted at remaining at the club next season, jubilantly telling fans 'season three is better than season two' at their Europa League victory parade. But chairman Daniel Levy and the board have moved to dismiss Postecoglou, exactly two years to the day he was hired. Supporters have since taken to social media to pay their 'eternal thanks' for delivering one of Spurs' 'greatest nights'. 'Thank you Ange Postecoglou for the best night of my life following this football club. A man who dared to do... and did. You have a fan in me for life, mate,' one fan wrote on X. Another added: 'We were getting rejected by Feyenoord managers when Ange came in. He saw us Kane weeks after. 'Still he defended the club in every press conference and delivered our greatest night in 41 years, despite a summer window of only one senior player. 'I will be eternally thankful.' One fan wrote: 'To dare is to do - and Ange Postecoglou did just that. 'Ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought and gave us the greatest night in 41 years. One fan said he was 'eternally thankful' after Postecoglou 'defended the club' during his stint Another wrote on X: 'Thank you Ange Postecoglou for the best night of my life' following Spurs Postecoglou won Tottenham's first European trophy since 1984 after beating United in Bilbao Eternally grateful, Ange.' 'Thank you for giving us one of the best nights of our lives, Ange,' another added. The former Celtic boss made a promising start to his Tottenham career but his side's form dipped towards the end of his first season and they missed out on Champions League qualification. Last season, the Australian has been forced to make do without many of his first team regulars this season after an unprecedented injury crisis which has particularly hit his defensive line. First choice centre backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were sidelined for significant spells of the season, as were Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison. He had also clashed with the Spurs supporter based throughout his time in charge, before winning over with the historic trophy win. He said he would 'never understand' fans who wanted Spurs to lose to City - a result which would prevent arch-rivals Arsenal from taking the lead in the Premier League title race, last May. Postecoglou also came in for abuse after appearing to taunt fans in the stands after Tottenham scored a goal - which was later ruled out - against Chelsea in their March Premier League meeting. Tottenham finished in 17th place in the Premier League but qualified for the Champions League The former Celtic boss will leave after two years after Daniel Levy and the board sacked him The head coach was booed loudly by travelling supporters in Stamford Bridge, but remained adamant in the aftermath that he had only been trying to gee up the crowd as he cupped his hand to his ear. The mood in north London had grown increasingly sour, with Postecoglou hitting out at the board in a recent press conference, implying that he was taking the lion's share of the blame for Tottenham's failings. But he was leave with heroic status, as the man who ended Tottenham's long trophy drought.

French rabbi tells of two attacks in one week as hate crimes rise

PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - A French rabbi was attacked on Friday for the second time in a week, he told Reuters, reflecting a broad rise in hate crimes across France that has included high-profile anti-Semitic assaults. Elie Lemmel said he was sitting at a cafe in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine on Friday when he was hit in the head by a chair. "I found myself on the ground, I immediately felt blood flowing," he said. He was stunned and unsure what exactly had happened, he said, initially thinking something must have fallen from a window or roof, before it occurred to him he had been attacked. "Unfortunately, given my beard and my kippah, I suspected that was probably why, and it's such a shame," he said. Friday's incident follows another in the town of Deauville in Normandy last week, when Lemmel said he was punched in the stomach by an unknown assailant. Lemmel said he was used to "not-so-friendly looks, some unpleasant words, people passing by, spitting on the ground," but had never been physically assaulted before the two attacks. The prosecutor's office in Nanterre said it had opened an investigation into the Neuilly attack for aggravated violence and that a person was being held for questioning. It said it could not provide further details. "This act sickens us," former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal wrote on X regarding Friday's incident involving Lemmel. "Antisemitism, like all forms of hatred, is a deadly poison for our society." Last week, five Jewish institutions were sprayed with green paint in Paris. "I condemn in the strongest possible terms the anti-Semitic attack that targeted a rabbi in Neuilly today. Attacking a person because of their faith is a shame. The increase in anti-religious acts requires the mobilization of everyone," Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said in a post on X. France has seen a rise in hate crimes. Last year, police recorded an 11% rise in racist, xenophobic or antireligious crimes, according to official data published in March. The figures did not include a breakdown by attacks on different religions.
