"The trial run was meant as a preview. We are trying to make this a perfect project," said VC Ghosh. Ever since the pandemic struck, visitors' entry into the ashram has been barred.
The heritage walk, being managed by Rabindra Bhavana, will be a one-and-a-half-hour tour of the ashram complex, with trained guides—four male and four female university employees have been trained for the task—narrating the history and relevance of various landmarks.
Visitors will have the option of choosing from Bengali-, Hindi- and English-speaking guides. While Indians will have to pay Rs 300 per person, the tariff will be Rs 1,000 per head for foreigners, Rs 150 for individual students and Rs 50 for students in groups.
Initially, the tours will be held on Sundays only but the frequency will increase gradually.
For now, a visit to Rabindra Bhavana will not be part of the walk but people can go there separately by paying a fee, as is the current practice. If the walks turn popular, the university would consider including other places, such as Kala Bhavana, Sangit Bhavana, Sriniketan and Rabindra Bhavana, in the walks, said Rabindra Bhavana director Amit Hazra. "If the walks expand, we will have to arrange for e-rickshaws to cover the large area and combo tickets will be offered," he said.

PM's visit set to boost tourism in Tiruchi region

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Brahadisvara Ttemple at Gandgaikonda Cholapuram near Jayankondam, a UNESCO world Heritage monument maintained by the Archaeology Society of India, is set to boost tourism. Ever since the temple was declared as a world heritage monument in 2004, the number of visitors has been on the rise. Foreign tourists evince greater interest in understanding the grandeur and excellence of Chola architecture and sculpture that the temple features. The sprawling lush green lawns on the temple premises teems with children especially on weekends. According to tourism industry sources, Gangaikonda Cholapuram has emerged as one of the top searched items online since the announcement was made on Prime Minister's visit to Brahadisvar Temple about two weeks ago. Besides a number of YouTube channels in Tamil, Hindi, English and others, the event was broadcast live on many news channels across the country, thereby garnering enormous interest among the people to know Rajendra Chola I and the temple built by him. Tourism officials say the temple ranks among the top three places of archaeological significance in Tamil Nadu. The other two are the Brahadisvarar Temple in Thanjavur and the Airavatesvara temple of Darasuram. They are of the view that the tourist footfall to Gangaikonda Cholapuram will certainly witness a steep increase in the immediate future thanks to the immense popularity gained after the visit of Mr. Modi. On average, 9,000 to 10,000 tourists visit Gangaikonda cholapuram per month. As per a recent official data, 9,107 tourists visited Brahadeeswarar Temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram in May. The footfall includes 342 foreigners. A total of 6,626 tourists visited in June. 'We expect an exponential increase in tourists, particularly domestic, arrival to Gangaikonda cholapuram. We can see this upward trend in August month itself. The tourist footfall in neighbouring Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts will increase correspondingly,' says A. Sankar, Tourism Officer, Ariyalur district.

American YouTuber says he fell sick in India despite eating only in 5-star hotels: ‘It is not racist'

American YouTuber Tyler Oliveira has waded into a growing online debate about whether pointing out India's hygiene and infrastructure problems amounts to racism. The 25-year-old content creator claimed that he fell seriously ill during his visit to India, despite sticking to food from five-star hotels throughout his stay. Tyler Oliveira says he fell sick in India despite eating only at 5-star hotels. Oliveira was responding to a viral video by an Indian woman who criticised foreign travellers – particularly white visitors – for allegedly slumming it in India to reinforce negative stereotypes. In the video, she said that 'white people' often travel on tight budgets, live in poor conditions 'worse than the way underprivileged people in India live', and visit unhygienic locations – only to return and complain about how 'pathetic' India is. Falling sick in India Countering this claim, Oliveira said that even luxury travel in India is not immune to the country's sanitation challenges. 'Only ate in 5 star hotels and still contracted 4 types of Salmonella,' he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the illness was likely caused by 'the hotel sourcing eggs from a filthy chicken farm right next to a literal mountain of trash.' 'There are serious hygiene issues that must be addressed in India,' wrote Oliveira. 'It is NOT racist to address the poor quality of life most Indians are subjected to while the upper caste insulates themselves from reality.' For naysayers who refused to believe him, the YouTuber attached proof in the form of his medical reports. His post was flooded with angry comments from Indians who slammed him for 'defaming' the country. 'The 5 star hotels were about $100 a night. It was budget travel relative to American standards. Ambani has a billion dollar tower overlooking the slums. Your anger is misplaced,' he wrote in response to one angry comment.
