NMPA commissions air quality monitoring station

Time of India2 days ago
Mangaluru: New Mangalore Port Authority commissioned a Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS) at Seamen's Memorial Garden in the NMPA wharf area, inside the security compound wall near Mallya Gate, to monitor and record real-time air quality parameters on Friday.
The initiative aims to ensure better environmental management, public health awareness, and compliance with National Air Quality Standards. The CAAQMS is capable of measuring key air pollutants, including Particulate Matter (PM10 & PM2.5), Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂), Ozone (O₃), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Ammonia (NH₃), and other relevant parameters as per KSPCB guidelines.
The station transmits data continuously to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the Central Pollution Control Board.
CAAQMS provides real-time weather data like wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, ambient temperature, ambient pressure, and solar radiation, which are also monitored on a continuous basis and displayed at the gate.
The CAAQMS project was implemented at a contract cost of Rs 2.7 crore, and the installation was completed on Aug 10. The system will be maintained for five years up to July 16, 2030.
The initiative will help in taking timely measures to improve air quality and protect public health. The Port Authority encourages the public to check the readings regularly. The project also aligns with the broader national objective of strengthening air quality monitoring across the country, stated a release.
