Israeli Rabbi accused of sexual abuse by multiple women

Shafaq News/ Several Israeli women have accused prominent Rabbi Haim Yosef David Abergil of sexual abuse, alleging he took advantage of their vulnerability while they sought his guidance during personal crises, an Israeli media investigation has revealed. A detailed report aired by Israel's Channel 12 featured testimony from a woman identified by the pseudonym "Liel," 21, who recounted being assaulted by Abergil, a highly influential religious figure in the country. Liel stated she approached Abergil for advice during a difficult period but encountered inappropriate physical contact. 'I kept it to myself for over a year, but I decided to speak out because I learned there were other victims,' she recounted. 'I thought what happened to me was a one-time incident, but it continued with other girls.' She also described Abergil as a major spiritual authority in her life. 'He is everything to us... our path to God goes through him,' she said. Recalling the moment she felt in danger, she added, 'I trembled and cried, and asked him to stop, but he didn't.' According to her account, Abergil attempted to justify his actions, saying, 'What happened was acceptable... God loves you and protects you, that's why I'm close to you.' He warned her not to disclose the incident to anyone, claiming people might 'misunderstand it.' He also gave her cash and material gifts, encouraging her to buy a gold ring 'so she would feel he was close to her.' Liel's account was not isolated. Other young women have submitted similar complaints to police, and an official investigation is expected to be launched soon. One of the alleged victims revealed she was harassed at age 13. After moving to another city, she later received threats from individuals close to Abergil when she considered speaking out. In a notable development, Abergil admitted to some of his actions in a conversation with Liel's parents, asserting that they 'were for her benefit.' Abergil recently made headlines for his opposition to the Shas movement and announced his intention to run in upcoming elections with a new Haredi party. His lawyer denied all allegations, describing them as a 'blood libel,' and asserted that Abergil 'has never harmed anyone in his life, and his work has always been for the people of Israel and its soldiers.'

Coalition airdrop kills ISIS commanders in Syria

Shafaq News/ Several senior ISIS operatives were killed in a joint airdrop carried out by the Global Coalition and a Syrian armed faction in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Wednesday. The operation targeted a hideout in Jabal al-Bishri, a remote desert region straddling multiple Syrian provinces where ISIS remnants maintain a presence. SOHR noted that while the identities of those killed have yet to be confirmed, intelligence indicated the site was hosting a planned leadership gathering. According to the report, Coalition forces, supported by the US-backed Free Syria Army, stormed the site and engaged in direct clashes with ISIS fighters. Documents recovered from the location are believed to contain details on the group's activity and plans in central Syria. The Observatory described the mission as one of the most effective strikes against ISIS in recent months. The central Syrian desert—also known as al-Badiya—remains a critical zone for ISIS due to its vast, inaccessible terrain and limited state control, which have enabled the group to launch attacks. A similar operation took place on May 25, when Coalition troops conducted an airdrop with Syrian partners in the eastern desert of Homs, near the administrative border with Deir ez-Zor, targeting ISIS elements in the same region.

Trump warns nations over UN two-state talks

Shafaq News/ The US President Donald Trump's administration has warned foreign governments not to attend a UN conference scheduled next week in New York on the Israeli-Palestinian two-state solution, Reuters reported on Wednesday. According to a diplomatic cable dated June 10, the US stated that countries taking positions 'against Israel' would be seen as acting contrary to American foreign policy interests and could face diplomatic consequences. The message also made clear that Washington opposes any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. The US State Department has not commented publicly on the report. On Tuesday, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Bloomberg that he does not believe establishing a Palestinian state remains a goal of US foreign policy. The State Department later said Huckabee was expressing a personal view, while the White House referred to previous comments by President Trump expressing skepticism about the two-state model. In an earlier statement, Trump had suggested the US should consider taking control of Gaza, a remark that drew widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, Arab states, the Palestinian Authority, and the UN. The White House also cited Trump's 2024 campaign comments in which he said, 'I'm no longer sure the two-state solution can work.' The two-state solution envisions the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, based largely on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. It has formed the basis of decades of international diplomacy. As of June 2025, more than 147 of the 193 United Nations member states have formally recognized the State of Palestine—approximately 75% of the international community. Recognition has surged in the past year, with countries including Mexico, Armenia, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway, and Spain joining the list. Earlier recognitions include Sweden (2014), Vatican, and most countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. At the same time, many countries continue to support the two-state solution as a framework for peace, even without formal recognition of Palestine. This includes the US, EU members, the UK, Canada, Australia, China, India, and the G7 nations, all of which have reiterated their commitment to a negotiated two-state outcome. The UN conference scheduled for June 2025 aims to reaffirm international support for this framework amid growing concerns over unilateral actions and deepening divisions. Meanwhile, Israel's current government, backed by a parliamentary majority, officially opposes the creation of a Palestinian state—a position solidified by a 2024 Knesset vote.
