Euro 2025: Netherlands ready to believe in miracles and win big against France to advance
The Dutch likely must beat an in-form France by three clear goals on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals, needing to make up ground after a 4-0 beating by England.
'Miracles exist,' Netherlands coach Andries Jonker said in translated comments on Saturday. 'After a very heavy 4-0 defeat there is one thing you can do, rise up again.'
The scenario in Group D is that France sits top on six points, and England is expected also to end on six points by beating Wales in the final round of games played at the same time on Sunday evening in Switzerland.
That would leave just one Dutch path to finish runner-up to England in the standings — a big win over France to lift them in a three-way tiebreaker between the six-point teams. The decider would be goal difference for those three teams in games against each other while excluding their results against Wales.
'Remember Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain,' Jonker said, citing the men's Champions League epic in 2017 that is known in soccer lore as 'La Remontada,' the comeback.
Barcelona lost 4-0 in Paris in the first leg of the round of 16, then won 6-1 at home to advance.
'There is no other option,' added Jonker, once an assistant coach at Barcelona, but to deliver an unforgettable game and performance.
France coach Laurent Bonadei saw no disrespect when told of Jonker's comments — and countered with humor.
'That's normal, that's his role,' Bonadei said of his counterpart's confidence, though noted his own team's threat after scoring six goals across its two wins so far.
'It's maybe not 3-0 that he needs to win, but 5-2 or 6-3,' said the France coach, whose team needs only a point to top the standings. 'It will be a beautiful game. I would prefer to be in our place than theirs.'
Of course, if tournament debutant Wales was to stop England winning — not miraculous, though unlikely after losing to the Netherlands and 4-1 to France — then a win of any kind for the Dutch would be enough to advance.
'Wales is so eager to beat England,' said the Netherlands' veteran No. 10 Daniëlle van de Donk, who also was asked if she believed in miracles.
'I believe in our team,' van de Donk said in translated comments, 'and in football anything is possible.'

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Ex-England cricketer shares where India lost Lord's Test – 'The eight-minute over flipped…'
India's Shubman Gill and England's Zak Crawley have words at the end of the third day during the third cricket test match between England and India at Lord's cricket ground in London, Saturday, July 12, 2025. (Bradley Collyer/PA via AP) Former England pacer Stuart Broad revealed where the third Test between India and England flipped and made the Lord's Test a classic. England won the Lord's Test by 22 runs and lead the five-match Test series 2-1. The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester, starting from July 23. "I think the whole Test match flipped on that brilliant over at the end of Day Three," Broad said on For the Love of Cricket, his new podcast with Jos Buttler. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Broad was referring to the last over before the end of the day's play, where tempers flared between Indian fielders and England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. "It was sort of eight minutes to go. Obviously, England were thinking we can make this one over, India wanted to get two in. It had been a really sort of slow Test match, although we had Rooty's class with a hundred, KL Rahul's class with a hundred. India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1 "Then this over came, and Crawley's under a bit of pressure. Obviously, Bumrah charging in, pulling away—just absolute carnage and chaos. I think I put on my Instagram that I'd been whinging about slow play, mainly aimed at the umpires, who just dawdle along like they're listening to classical music between overs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Concentrated Siberian Ginseng Extract 2oz Superior Ginseng Undo It takes forever for the play to start. "Shubman Gill loses the plot and starts effing and blinding at Zak. I think that ignited the Test match completely because they walked off the field, Crawley got through it, still ding-donging on the way back to the pavilion," he added. Buttler chimed in and said the incident also riled up England captain Ben Stokes, who was watching everything from the Lord's balcony. "I mean, Stokes the captain just drags his team with him all the way, and then the impact—you know, then you think about him watching that one over from the balcony thinking, 'Right, it's game on. You're going after one of my players, this is it. It's all on the line. We can't wait to get out there and have a go back at you,'" said Buttler. Brentford sign ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson
London: Brentford have confirmed the signing of Premier League and Champions League winning Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract. Henderson, an England international with 84 caps for the Three Lions, joins the Bees on a free transfer after departing Ajax this summer. As per reports, Brentford had wrapped the deal last week but Henderson asked for the announcement to be postponed following the passing of his former teammate Diogo Jota. The England midfielder joins the Bees as a replacement after Christian Norgaard joined Arsenal. The midfielder returns to the Premier League after short stints in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq and then in the Netherlands with Ajax. Prior to that, Henderson was with Liverpool where he spent 12 years and won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Community Shield, Super Cup and Club World Cup. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said, 'When we became aware of Jordan's availability, it was a pretty simple decision. 'We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he's still phenomenally fit and he's still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. 'With the void of experienced players leaving the building - Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee - it was important to replace that." Henderson began his career with boyhood club Sunderland, where he made his Premier League debut as an 18-year-old and, after a loan spell in the Championship with Coventry City in 2008/09, he went on to make a further 70 top-flight appearances for the Black Cats. A move to Liverpool followed, where he played 492 games and scored 33 goals, before replacing Steven Gerrard as Reds captain in 2015. As skipper, he lifted six trophies, including the Champions League after victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Henderson was also named FWA Footballer of the Year at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and included in the PFA Team of the Year. At international level, Henderson has played 84 times for England after making his debut in 2010. He was also named England Senior Men's Player of the Year in 2019. The 35-year-old has featured at three World Cups, starting the Three Lions' semi-final defeat to Croatia in 2018, and scored in the 3-0 win over Senegal in the round-of-16 win in 2022. He has also played at three European Championships, with the most recent of those coming in 2021, when England lost the final to Italy at Wembley Stadium. Henderson was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2021 Birthday Honours for services to football and to charity.
