The Wombats AO Arena review: Enduring band prove the spirit of the indie disco is alive and well
The spirit of indie pop is still very much alive and during The Wombats' AO Arena gig it had an added bit of bounce.
The Liverpool three-piece, formed in 2003, stopped in Manchester on Saturday night as part of their arena tour supporting the band's sixth album Oh! The Ocean. The thousands packed into the venue undoubtedly enjoyed value for money with support coming from Red Rum Club and Everything Everything.
The latter, a Manchester favourite, produced a 10-song stint which featured Kemosabe, Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread, Cough Cough and Distant Past in one of the best 'warm-ups' you are likely to see. Frontman Jonathan Higgs' unique vocals were as flawless as ever with him putting them to full use on Everything Everything's closer No Reptites.

Arguably Everything Everything's booking felt a little 'grown up' for the festivities but given how many people arrived early, to see them, that clearly didn't materialise into an issue. Rightfully so, as the band are arena headliner quality on their own.
Soon after, The Wombats took to the stage, arriving to The Power of Love, by Huey Lewis and The News, invoking inevitable thoughts of classic 1980s film franchise Back to The Future.
What followed was a demonstration of longevity which has set The Wombats apart from some of their peers who now, rather sadly, reside in indie landfill. Not afraid to go big early, with renditions of Moving to New York and Techno Fan, the 10,000 plus people in Manchester's AO Arena were assuredly in for a good time.
This was confirmed when lead Matthew Murphy asked 'How the f**k are we doing tonight?' with enthusiastic loud cheers and whoops coming back at him. The group's indie pop calling cards have ensured such affection remains for The Wombats, aided by their sense of fun, and in more recent times their latest releases have helped them capture a new generation of fans - always evident by the fresh from exams crowds at the band's Leeds Festival sets.
On Saturday, Murphy engaged fans with a song about a gender he'll never understand through Kill The Director and talk of Japan with an airing of Tokyo before a wisdom of wombats (a quick Google was needed to discover the collective term for the animal) joined Murphy and bandmates Tord Øverland Knudsen and Dan Haggis for main set closer Let's Dance to Joy Division.
The resourceful wisdom firing confetti from cannons into the audience. Just for the avoidance of confusion, it was people in wombat suits...
Returning for a three-song encore, Murphy declared Manchester to be 'one of the greatest cities on planet earth'. The very enjoyable evening of frolics was brought to a close with Greek Tragedy as huge inflatable colourful balls descended from above.
Lots of fans took the mammoth items of memorabilia out of the venue as they headed onto Manchester's city centre streets.

Those creators executed their plans by asking artificial-intelligence (AI) tools to create videos and inauthentic thumbnail images promoting the false rumor. Snopes contacted by email representatives for Murphy to request comment regarding the fabricated rumor, included about Murphy's alleged statements, and will update this story if we receive more information. For example, on June 8, 2025, a manager of the Undisclosed Realms YouTube channel posted a video (archived) displaying the title, "Eddie Murphy SHOCKS Court 'I Left Hollywood Because of Diddy!'" The creator of the clip labeled its content in the description as "comedic satire." As of this writing, the video received over 236,000 views. The video's thumbnail image featured an AI-generated, split-screen view, showing Combs in an orange jumpsuit alongside Murphy, both seated in front of microphones. The chyron read, "Diddy ruined my career." The video showed authentic visuals. At the same time, the clip also featured AI-generated editing, scripting and voice narration, meaning all its creator needed to do to make the entire clip was enter a brief text prompt into one of many different AI tools. The AI-detection website Sightengine found a 99.9 percent likelihood of someone generating the thumbnail image with AI. The narrator's voice matched that of the AI-generated "Bill" on the ElevenLabs AI company's website. Snopes added the red line due to the thumbnail image's inauthenticity. (Undisclosed Realms/YouTube) Days earlier, on June 1, a manager of the Red Carpet Rumors Facebook page posted a video with the title, "1 MINUTE AGO: Eddie Murphy Testifies, 'I Left Hollywood Because of Diddy." That video, also generated with AI, received over 4 million views, and featured the description, "In a stunning courtroom revelation, comedy legend Eddie Murphy has reportedly taken the stand and confessed the real reason he vanished from Hollywood for years — and it all leads back to Sean 'Diddy' Combs. With the world watching, Eddie declared, 'I left Hollywood because of Diddy,' sending shockwaves through the courtroom and beyond." The video's AI-generated thumbnail image showed a split-screen view of a tearful Murphy crying in court next to Combs, again wearing an orange jumpsuit. A fake photo displayed between the pair showed Murphy and Combs shirtless in a bed. The chyron referenced "breaking news" and a purported Murphy quote saying that Combs forced him into engaging in oral sex. The text read, "He made me suck it." Snopes also added the red line in this thumbnail image. (Red Carpet Rumors/Facebook) Other users shared this same false rumor far and wide on Facebook (archived), Threads (archived), TikTok (archived) and X (archived), as well as on many different YouTube channels. A Google search result also displayed a popular TikTok video with at least 162,000 views from user @ displaying the title, "P2. 1 MINUTE AGO: Eddie Murphy Testifies, 'I Left Hollywood Because of Diddy.'" As of this writing, an attempt to access the video showed the message, "Video currently unavailable." Additionally, at least one X post (archived) from May 31 linked to a removed YouTube video displaying the title, "1 MINUTE AGO: Eddie Murphy Testifies, 'I Left Hollywood Because of Diddy.'" Upon attempting to access the video (archived), YouTube showed the message, "This video has been removed for violating YouTube's Terms of Service." In other words, this false rumor about Murphy and Combs originated in May, most likely with a label about fictional content, as opposed to satire. While Murphy did not testify at Combs' trial, his name did receive a brief, albeit minor, mention. Referencing Combs' ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, NewsNation reported of Murphy and actor Bruce Willis: While reviewing text messages Ventura sent Combs in court, the defense team noted she asked the hip-hop mogul if they could have more than a sexual relationship, pointing to both Willis and Murphy as examples where they successfully co-parented with the mothers of their children. The Cupps, Gary Dugger perform in tornado-affected community
Residents of Finley Trailer Park gathered last Wednesday evening for a musical performance aimed at bringing the community together after the May 16 tornado. A flatbed trailer was transformed into a stage for a special performance by The Cupps, a Christian-based band from Williamsburg, and local singer Gary Dugger. The gathering was partially organized by Monroe Murphy, a resident of the trailer park who wanted to do something in response to the devastation that struck the area. YouTube personality John Ward of La Follette, Tennessee, also played a role in making the event happen. Ward, known for his channel The Appalachian Channel with John Ward, helped facilitate the visit and documented the event for his audience. The event brought community members together to uplift one another as the area begins recovery efforts following the EF-4 tornado that left behind major structural damage in the park. Murphy was among those who had damages to his home. Recounting his experience, Murphy said that at about 11:45 p.m. May 16, he stepped out on his porch because he'd heard a sound on the roof, which he said ended up being hail. 'The wind started picking up so I immediately closed the door and by that time, I knew something bad was coming so I laid down in my kitchen floor,' Murphy recounted. 'Next thing I know, my trailer felt like it was up in the air, turned upside down, and slammed on the roof.' Murphy said he must have blacked out during the experience, saying it only spanned 30 to 45 seconds. He shared that while he did not acquire any broken bones, it did hurt his head and back. Murphy went on to spend the night in his brother's truck, awaking there at daylight. 'I went back to where I knew I got up from and there was a Bible laying there... It had embroidery on it and it was Psalms 93:11. It said, 'The Lord will give charge over his angels to protect you in all your ways,' and that was laying right beside where I was at,' said Murphy. Now, Murphy temporarily resides in a mobile home loaned by Still Water Baptist Church. Ward has driven from Tennessee four times to provide assistance where he can. 'When this happened, I had supplies in stock already as I was giving stuff to the homeless,' Ward stated. 'When I came here, this was the first place I found really that needed some stuff.' Ward said it's been 'inspiring' to see both community members and other outsiders band together to provide aid to those in need. 'I'm just thankful for all the people that's donated and come to volunteer here,' he said. As attendees enjoyed the show, they were also treated to free hotdogs, chips, and water from Bobby and Angela Nelson. Wednesday's event came to a close following the two performances.
