Lecturer loses RM294,000 to scammers
Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the lecturer, aged 44, received a call on April 30 from someone claiming to be a representative of an e-commerce platform who said his telephone number had been used for fraudulent activities.
'The lecturer was then connected to another individual who posed as a police officer, accusing the victim of being involved in document forgery and money laundering. The lecturer was also threatened with imprisonment and whipping,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported.
He said the man also ordered the victim to report to them five times per day via phone, WhatsApp and video calls.
The lecturer made 17 transactions to 11 different bank accounts through online banking and cash deposit machines, involving a total amount of RM294,000.
He said the public could verify account numbers and phone numbers received through https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my before making financial transactions.

GOF seizes RM520,000 worth of e-cigarettes in Kelantan
TUMPAT: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 2,600 units of electronic cigarettes worth about RM520,000 in an operation here on Wednesday. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said a man was also arrested in the 10.30am raid. He said the operation took place at an illegal jetty in Kampung Tengkorak. "The GOF team was conducting a routine operation when they spotted a suspicious four-wheel-drive vehicle parked in the area. "Further inspection led to the discovery of 2,600 units of electronic cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM520,000," he said. He said the man, who is a local, was subsequently arrested. He said the confiscated items were handed over to the state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry for further action. The case is being investigated under Rules 4(1), 4(2), and 6 of the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Electronic Cigarette Devices) Order 2022.

According to the facts of the case, the accused, who had been caring for the victim since infancy, had physically assaulted and abused the girl, resulting in broken teeth and multiple injuries on her body. I respectfully request the court to review the photographs of the victim's injuries, which clearly show that the accused failed in her responsibilities as the victim's guardian,' he said. "The accused's actions have left both physical and psychological scars on her adopted child, who is now suffering from trauma,' he added. Meanwhile, lawyer Khairul Hazwan Rashid Mohd Redduan from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented the accused, appealed for the prison sentence to commence from the date of her arrest.
