Top Seed Coco Gauff Rallies To Reach WTA Montreal Fourth Round
Gauff arrived in Montreal having lost her tournament openers at Wimbledon and Berlin in the wake of her French Open triumph.
She struggled mightily in her first match in Montreal but came up with a win over Danielle Collins despite 23 double faults.
The numbers weren't quite as ugly against Kudermetova, but 14 double faults were damaging enough.
Seven of them came in the first set, as Gauff let a 4-1 lead get away.
She had three more double faults in the opening game of the second set to hand Kudermetova a service break, but broke back to level the set at 3-3 and broke Kudermetova to force a third, seizing a 2-0 lead and powering home from there.
"I'm sure everybody could read my body language," said Gauff, whose frustration was clear.
"But mentally I'm very proud of myself. There's obviously parts of my game to work on, one of that being the serve.
"And the fact that I'm winning these matches not feeling my best is definitely something to be proud of."
In other third-round action, American McCartney Kessler shocked world number five Mirra Andreeva, who got off to a strong start but couldn't hang on in a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 loss.
Andreeva, the 18-year-old Russian who electrified the WTA with back-to-back 1000 level wins this year, was playing her first tournament since a quarter-final run at Wimbledon and her first match of the week after a first-round bye and a second-round walkover.
She jumped to a quick 3-1 lead, but Kessler twice regained a break and after Andreeva failed on two attempts to serve out the opening set the American won the last three points of the tiebreaker to pocket the set.
Kessler seized the initiative in the second, breaking Andreeva twice on the way to a 4-1 lead.
Making matters worse for the inconsistent Andreeva, she took a hard spill in the second set, taking a medical time out to have her left ankle bandaged in what could be a worrying sign with the US Open due to start on August 24.
Kessler will fight for her first WTA 1000 quarter-final appearance against Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who beat Daria Kasatkina 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Chennai Grandmasters: Erigaisi face stiff challenge from Gujrathi, Giri
Last Updated: Chennai, Aug 4 (PTI) India No. 1 Arjun Erigaisi will face tough competition from seasoned compatriot Vidit Gujrathi and Netherland's top player Anish Giri during the expanded third edition of the Chennai Grandmasters chess tournament, starting here from Wednesday. The event, which carries a winner's purse of Rs 1 crore, will be competed for the first time over nine rounds in classical round robin format across Masters and Challengers segments. This year's Masters field includes a powerful mix of global and Indian talent. Alongside Erigaisi and Liang, the opening round will see top-seeded Dutch GM Anish face American GM Ray Robson, while Gujrathi, Vincent Keymer, Nihal Sarin, and others are all set for high-stakes match-ups. World No. 5 Erigaisi will open his campaign against American prodigy Awonder Liang. While the highly-anticipated clash between two Indian grandmasters Erigaisi and Gujrathi is set for Round 8 on August 14. Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Zak Brown
Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. 'I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine,' he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. 'My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although it faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. 'Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport,' he added. 'I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that.' Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
