Germany jails Syrian pro-Assad fighter over war crimes
A court in the southern German city of Stuttgart on Tuesday sentenced a Syrian man to life in prison for war crimes it said he committed during Syria's civil war while fighting for the country's former dictator, Bashar Assad.
The trial, which began last October, involved testimony from 30 witnesses, most of them Syrian nationals now living around the world.
The court said the verdict could be appealed.
What was the man accused of?
The 33-year-old was found guilty of leading a Hezbollah-backed militia that committed atrocities against Sunni Muslim civilians in his home town of Busra al-Sham in southern Syria.
The Lebanese Iranian-backed Shiite group Hezbollah gave its support to Assad during the civil war.
Among other things, the court found that in 2012, the militia raided and plundered the house of an unarmed 21-year-old student, shooting him dead. The victim's mother and brother were among the witnesses for the prosecution.
The court also said that in 2013, the militia beat three people with Kalashnikovs before handing them over to Assad's military intelligence, which tortured them and held them captive under inhumane conditions.
The court verdict also said the group in 2014 forced a 40-year-old man and his family from their home, after which the man was tortured to such extent that he was unable to walk owing to his injuries.
The man was arrested in December 2023 in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, of which Stuttgart is the capital.
Trials under universal jurisdiction
German prosecutors have made use of universal jurisdiction laws to seek trials for several suspects believed to have committed atrocities during Syria's civil war.
In 2022, a German court handed a life sentence to ex-intelligence officer Anwar Raslan for murder, rape and crimes against humanity committed at the notorious Al-Khatib jail in 2011 and 2012, the first conviction for state-backed torture committed during Syria's civil war.
Several other cases relating to crimes committed during the Syrian civil war are being heard by German courts, as well as in France and Sweden.
Syria's civil war, which began after a crackdown by Assad's regime on peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2011, ended only in late 2024 when the autocratic leader was ousted in an Islamist-led rebel offensive.

Two more persons arrested in crackdown on 'anti-nationals' in Assam

Two more persons have been arrested in Assam in an ongoing crackdown on "anti-national and communal elements", Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday (June 7, 2025). With these, the number of arrests in such cases in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack has reached 90. "Update on crackdown against Anti-national and communal elements - 7 Jun - 90 arrests till now," Mr. Sarma said in a post on X. #Update on crackdown against Anti-national and communal elements | 7 Jun | 90 arrests till now 1️⃣@Goalpara_Police arrested Sanidul Islam for offensive social media post on Lord Ram 2️⃣@KamrupPolice arrested Saniur Rahman alias sunnybhai for inciting communal discord through SM — Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) June 7, 2025 One person has been apprehended by Goalpara police for making "offensive social media posts on Lord Ram", and another by Kamrup police for "inciting communal discord" through social media. The State police have been taking action against people for "anti-India" and "pro-Pakistan" activities, including posts on social media, since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed. Among those arrested on the anti-national charge was opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam. He was initially arrested on sedition charges for allegedly "defending" Pakistan and its complicity in the Pahalgam attack. After he secured bail in that case, he was held under the stringent National Security Act. Mr. Sarma had earlier said that the state-wide crackdown on traitors would continue.

Let go of arrogance, speak Kannada, respect local community: Pai

New Delhi: Joining the ongoing language row, tech investor Mohandas Pai said professionals working in a state like Karnataka must learn the local language and use it, especially in public dealings. Terming the refusal of certain public-dealing officials to learn Kannada as 'arrogance', he said it causes unnecessary tensions, which are easily avoidable. The Kannada language issue in Bengaluru has become a flashpoint in recent months. With the rise of workers to Bengaluru from various states over the years, there have been growing concerns among locals about the perceived erosion of the language in public life. 'Bengaluru is the most welcoming place. The local population speaking Kannada is only 33 per cent. Lot of people have come, they've benefitted, they're doing very well... 'Now, we have small problems because the people who come from outside, many of them become arrogant and refuse to speak a few words of Kannada. Speak a few words of Kannada, show respect to the local community. We must show respect to any community,' Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital, said in an interview to PTI. Pai said this approach applies everywhere. Whether one is moving to Bengal or Maharashtra, learning a few words of the local language would help outsiders connect with the community. Referring to the recent SBI dispute, wherein a bank manager reportedly refused to speak Kannada with a customer -- a stance that sparked public outrage, protests by pro-Kannada groups, and eventually an official apology from the bank -- Pai said the situation could have been avoided. 'What she could have done is, because she's in a service job, say, sir, I'm sorry, I can't speak the language, I'm learning. I'll ask my colleague to help me out and be respectful. That's all that is required. Nothing else,' he said. Pai stressed that customer service professionals, especially in rural areas, must prioritise the customer's language and cultural context: 'If you happen to be in a rural area, the customer cannot speak Hindi or English. You must speak the local language.'

Is Elon Musk floating a new political party after Donald Trump feud? Tesla CEO reveals name

Elon Musk on Thursday floated the idea of a new party and even conducted a poll to see the reaction of the people in the United States. The move came after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO's public feud with US President Donald Trump, whom he had backed in the November 2024 election. Musk posted a poll on the social media platform X, asking the public to determine whether a new party was required in America. He revealed the results on Friday, showing that 80 percent of the respondents supported the poll. 'The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate," he said on X. Musk later named the new political outfit 'The America Party". It would be difficult to ascertain if Elon Musk could challenge the traditional two-party system in the United States. While it is not enshrined in the Constitution, the last time a President who was not from the traditional two parties was elected was in 1850. Elon Musk's rift with Donald Trump began recently when the billionaire criticised the Republican leader's 'Big Beautiful' spending bill, calling it an 'abomination'. Trump responded during his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, saying that he was disappointed with Musk. The richest man in the world took to X to claim that Trump would not have won the election without him. 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,' the Tesla boss wrote, adding, 'Such ingratitude'. Trump threatened to tear up all the federal contracts that Musk's companies have, and the SpaceX CEO responded by saying he would decommission the Falcon rocket, a threat he later reneged on. Musk also claimed that Trump was in the 'Epstein files' and that was the reason they hadn't been made public.
