Germany jails Syrian pro-Assad fighter over war crimes
A court in the southern German city of Stuttgart on Tuesday sentenced a Syrian man to life in prison for war crimes it said he committed during Syria's civil war while fighting for the country's former dictator, Bashar Assad.
The trial, which began last October, involved testimony from 30 witnesses, most of them Syrian nationals now living around the world.
The court said the verdict could be appealed.
What was the man accused of?
The 33-year-old was found guilty of leading a Hezbollah-backed militia that committed atrocities against Sunni Muslim civilians in his home town of Busra al-Sham in southern Syria.
The Lebanese Iranian-backed Shiite group Hezbollah gave its support to Assad during the civil war.
Among other things, the court found that in 2012, the militia raided and plundered the house of an unarmed 21-year-old student, shooting him dead. The victim's mother and brother were among the witnesses for the prosecution.
The court also said that in 2013, the militia beat three people with Kalashnikovs before handing them over to Assad's military intelligence, which tortured them and held them captive under inhumane conditions.
The court verdict also said the group in 2014 forced a 40-year-old man and his family from their home, after which the man was tortured to such extent that he was unable to walk owing to his injuries.
The man was arrested in December 2023 in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, of which Stuttgart is the capital.
Trials under universal jurisdiction
German prosecutors have made use of universal jurisdiction laws to seek trials for several suspects believed to have committed atrocities during Syria's civil war.
In 2022, a German court handed a life sentence to ex-intelligence officer Anwar Raslan for murder, rape and crimes against humanity committed at the notorious Al-Khatib jail in 2011 and 2012, the first conviction for state-backed torture committed during Syria's civil war.
Several other cases relating to crimes committed during the Syrian civil war are being heard by German courts, as well as in France and Sweden.
Syria's civil war, which began after a crackdown by Assad's regime on peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2011, ended only in late 2024 when the autocratic leader was ousted in an Islamist-led rebel offensive.

The call was hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Mr. Starmer and Mr. Zelenksyy reviewed Wednesday's meeting and had 'agreed there had been a powerful sense of unity and a strong resolve to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,' Downing Street said. Europe has been engaging Mr. Trump prior to Friday's discussions with Mr. Putin. The U.S. President also reacted faourably to his call with the European leaders. 'I would rate it a 10. Very friendly,' Mr. Trump had said about the call. The U.S. President has said he will meet Mr. Zeleknsyy and Mr. Putin together, if Friday's meeting in Alaska goes well.

Russian intelligence SVR claims EU planning to overthrow Hungarian PM
Brussels/Moscow, Aug 14 (UNI) The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed that the European Union is planning to overthrow Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, due to his closeness to Moscow and distancing himself from much of the EU's policies, reports RT. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen 'is seriously studying regime change scenarios' in Hungary, the SVR press service said in a statement on Wednesday. Orban has repeatedly clashed with Brussels on numerous occasions, refusing Kyiv military aid, ridiculing the bloc's move for militarisation, and denouncing any potential move for Ukraine's integration into the EU, calling the move 'disastrous.' According to the SVR, Brussel intends to replace Orban with candidate Peter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition Tisza Party – seen as 'loyal to globalist elites' and 'the main candidate for the post of Prime Minister' – to power in the 2026 parliamentary elections. The Russian foreign intelligence claimed that there has been significant administrative, financial, and media lobbying for Magyar's victory for the post of Prime Minister, via German parties, Norwegian NGOs, and the European People's Party. As per the agency, Kyiv – which made no secret its irritation at Orban's policies – was 'offended' by the Hungarian premier's opposition to Ukraine attempting to join the EU, and is now doing the 'dirty work' and destabilising the home situation in Budapest via its intelligence services and local Ukrainian diaspora, it added. Last month, Orban accused Kyiv of trying to influence Hungary's upcoming parliamentary elections. The European Commission is 'outraged' by Orban's attempts to 'pursue independent policy' and his efforts to influence EU decision-making, the SVR stated. 'Hungary's recent decision to veto the new seven-year EU budget project, which Budapest believes is designed for the militarisation of Europe and preparation for war with Moscow, has become the last straw that made the euro-bureaucrats lose their patience.' Orban rejected the EU venture, based on what he termed was 'built on the logic of war.' 'Billions for Ukraine, crumbs for farmers and development. Their goal: defeat Russia, install liberal allies, and expand their realm of influence,' he wrote on X. Ahead of I-Day, Punjab Police foil major terror plot by ISI-backed terrorist Rinda
Chandigarh: Punjab Police have foiled a major terror plot being orchestrated by Pakistan's ISI-backed terrorist Harwinder Rinda with the arrest of two operatives of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module, said Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav here on Thursday. Those arrested have been identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Preet, a resident of Bhullar village in Tarn Taran, and Gulshan Singh, alias Nandu, a resident of Rampura village in Amritsar. Police teams have recovered two 86P hand grenades and one 9MM pistol along with five cartridges from their possession. The development comes ahead of Independence Day and two days after Punjab Police busted a BKI terror module with the arrest of five operatives, including three juveniles, from Tonk and Jaipur districts of Rajasthan and recovered one 86P hand-grenade and one .30 bore pistol from their possession. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused were working under the directions of their foreign-based handlers sitting in Britain, the US and Europe. Probe has also revealed that the arrested accused were actively conspiring to target government buildings and police establishments using grenades to disturb the peace and harmony of the border state, he said. The DGP said further investigations are ongoing to establish linkages in this case. Assistant Inspector General (Ferozepur) Gursewak Singh Brar said that following human intelligence, teams from Counter Intelligence launched an operation and arrested suspects, Harpreet Singh and Gulshan Singh from Talwandi Bhai in Ferozepur. He said police have obtained remand of the accused, and further interrogation is expected to reveal more details regarding their contacts within and outside the country and their intended targets. A case under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act has been registered at the police station in Fazilka.
