Nat-Gas Prices Tumble as US Weather Forecasts Cool

August Nymex natural gas (NGQ25) on Wednesday closed down -0.175 (-5.38%). Aug nat-gas prices added to this week's sharp losses on Wednesday and dropped to a 2.75-month low due to forecasts for cooler US weather, which would curb nat-gas demand from electricity providers for air conditioning usage. Forecaster Atmospheric G2 said Wednesday that forecasts shifted generally cooler across the US for August 2-6. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market analysis you won't find anywhere else. Also, stronger US nat-gas output is weighing on prices with recent production up year-over-year. In addition, expectations for even higher US nat-gas production are also weighing on nat-gas prices after last Friday's weekly report from Baker Hughes showed that the number of active US nat-gas drilling rigs in the week ending July 18 rose by +9 to a 17-month high of 117 rigs. Lower-48 state dry gas production on Wednesday was 108.8 bcf/day (+4.5% y/y), according to BNEF. Lower-48 state gas demand on Wednesday was 79.5 bcf/day (-4.2% y/y), according to BNEF. Estimated LNG net flows to US LNG export terminals on Wednesday were 15.0 bcf/day (+1.0% w/w), according to BNEF. An increase in US electricity output is positive for nat-gas demand from utility providers. The Edison Electric Institute reported Wednesday that total US (lower-48) electricity output in the week ended July 19 rose +2.1% y/y to 99,373 GWh (gigawatt hours), and US electricity output in the 52-week period ending July 19 rose +2.4% y/y to 4,251,059 GWh. The consensus is that Thursday's weekly EIA nat-gas inventories will increase by +27 bcf for the week ended July 18, just below the five-year average for the week at +30 bcf. Last Thursday's weekly EIA report was slightly bearish for nat-gas prices since nat-gas inventories for the week ended July 11 rose +46 bcf, above the consensus of +45 bcf and the 5-year average of +41 bcf for the week. As of July 11, nat-gas inventories were down -4.9% y/y, but were +6.2% above their 5-year seasonal average, signaling adequate nat-gas supplies. As of July 21, gas storage in Europe was 65% full, compared to the 5-year seasonal average of 74% full for this time of year. Baker Hughes reported last Friday that the number of active US nat-gas drilling rigs in the week ending July 18 rose by +9 to a 17-month high of 117 rigs. In the past ten months, the number of gas rigs has risen from the 4-year low of 94 rigs reported in September 2024. Tariffs Cloud General Motors' Outlook As Annual Profits Remain At Risk

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is navigating a complex automotive landscape, contending with rising tariffs and significant capital expenditures, yet the company remains steadfast in its projection of $7.5 billion to $10 billion in free cash flow for 2025. Despite a mixed second quarter, marked by a sharp drop in the company's adjusted EBIT margins to 6.4% and a substantial $1.1 billion tariff headwind, the auto giant still surpassed revenue and earnings expectations. However, the company anticipates a challenging second half, particularly in North America, with expected declines in wholesale volumes and increased tariff burdens, though strategic measures are in place to mitigate these this backdrop, Bank Of America Securities analyst Federico Merendi reiterated the Buy rating on General Motors, lowering the price forecast from $65 to $62. The auto behemoth registered second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $2.53, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $2.40. Quarterly sales of $47.12 billion outpaced the Street view of $45.57 billion. Merendi highlights that China operations have now delivered two consecutive profitable quarters. He adds that the company kept its full‑year guidance intact but cautioned that adjusted EBIT in the back half is likely to trail first‑half results, driven by a mid‑single‑digit sequential drop in North American wholesale volumes, translating to roughly an 8% year‑over‑year decline in the second half of 2025. Merendi also points out that, unlike earlier messaging, the third quarter will carry a heavier gross tariff burden than the second quarter, though mitigating actions should soften the impact, and that stronger free cash flow in the second half could pave the way for share buybacks. Looking toward year‑end, the analyst sees a tougher fourth quarter, with North America deliveries down about 9% and margin pressure, while noting that favorable mix shifts and further improvements in China should help offset some of those headwinds. The analyst notes that while higher capital expenditures aren't ideal, General Motors' peers face the same challenge, making the relative impact more manageable. General Motors still expects to generate $7.5 billion to $10 billion of adjusted free cash flow in 2025, providing flexibility for both shareholder returns and reinvestment in the business. Canadian dollar steadies near three-week high as investor sentiment rises

By Fergal Smith TORONTO (Reuters) -The Canadian dollar was barely changed against its U.S. counterpart on Wednesday, with the commodity-linked currency holding near an earlier three-week high as investors weighed prospects of additional trade deals that could improve the global economic outlook. The loonie was trading nearly unchanged at 1.3604 per U.S. dollar, or 73.51 U.S. cents, after earlier touching its strongest intraday level since July 4 at 1.3576. "There has been very little CAD related news so it's moving along with the USD Index and general risk sentiment," said Amo Sahota, director at Klarity FX in San Francisco. "Traders will want to hear on trade deals with other major economies." Wall Street's main indexes moved higher after a Financial Times report that the EU and the United States were closing in on a trade deal, similar to the agreement U.S. President Donald Trump struck with Japan. The U.S. dollar edged lower for a fourth straight day against a basket of major currencies and the price of oil, one of Canada's major exports, settled 0.1% lower at $65.25 a barrel. Canadian retail sales data for May, due on Thursday, could offer clues on the hit from tariffs to the domestic economy. Economists forecast a monthly decline of 1.1%. Still, investors expect the Bank of Canada to keep its benchmark interest rate on hold at 2.75% at a policy decision next Wednesday, after recent data showed underlying inflation remaining well above target. "The potential of a BoC rate cut next week is slim so CAD traders are feeling somewhat passive on domestic drivers at the moment," Sahota said. Canadian bond yields rose across the curve, tracking moves in U.S. Treasuries. The 10-year was up 5.4 basis points at 3.557%.
