West Ham's Lucas Paqueta cleared of spot-fixing charges
It was alleged Paqueta directly sought to influence matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market, in order for one or more persons to profit from betting.
West Ham United can confirm that an independent Regulatory Commission has cleared Lucas Paquetá of misconduct charges made against him by the Football Association for alleged breaches of FA rule E5.
— West Ham United (@WestHam) July 31, 2025
He denied the charges and an independent regulatory commission found them not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta related to a failure to co-operate with its investigation had been found proven.
The FA said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'.
The games Paqueta had allegedly sought to influence were the Hammers' Premier League matches against Leicester on November 12, 2022, Aston Villa on March 12, 2023, Leeds on May 21, 2023 and Bournemouth on August 12, 2023.
Paqueta said in quotes released via the club: 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations.
'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face.
'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me – thank you for everything.'
West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady added: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared.
'He has maintained his innocence from the outset and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process.
'Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything.
'It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout and he is now looking forward to drawing a line under this episode, as is everyone at West Ham United.'
Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one – professionally, personally and emotionally for our client.
'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience.
' OS INIMIGOS VIRíO CONTRA NÓS POR 1 CAMINHO, MAS POR 7 CAMINHOS ELES FUGIRíO '
Uma obra completa, pra glória e honra de Deus 🙏🏽🙌🏽❤️ pic.twitter.com/3qD7L0b2x7
— Lucas Paquetá (@LucasPaqueta97) July 31, 2025
'Level is delighted that we've been able to help demonstrate that Lucas' integrity as a player and a person is in no doubt.
'Now, he can finally get back to focusing on the things that matter most to him – playing football and being with his family.'
The FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time.

Tonight's Cardiff City news as Tsunoda issues statement after exit and rising star catches the eye again
Tonight's Cardiff City news as Tsunoda issues statement after exit and rising star catches the eye again The latest Bluebirds news from Cardiff City Stadium Ryotaro Tsunoda and Ronan Kpakio of Cardiff City (Image: Cardiff City TV) Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, August 5. Tsunoda issues statement after exit Ryotaro Tsunoda has issued a statement to Yokohama F. Marinos fans after bringing an end to a frustrating 18-month spell at Cardiff City - during which he failed to make a single appearance for the first team. The 26-year-old defender joined the Bluebirds in early 2023, arriving with promise from Japan. However, he was never handed a competitive debut, failing to feature under Erol Bulut, Omer Riza, Aaron Ramsey or, ultimately, Brian Barry-Murphy. Tsunoda has now sealed a permanent move back to J1 League side Yokohama F. Marinos, the club where he previously impressed before his switch to the Welsh capital. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. The Yokohama side find themselves in the relegation zone upon his return and, in a heartfelt message to Marinos fans, Tsunoda admitted the return was not how he had envisioned his journey unfolding, but said he was determined to prove himself once again. 'Dear Marinos family, it's been a long time. I have recently decided to join the team on a permanent transfer,' he said. Article continues below 'This may not be the best timing or situation for either of us to meet again, so I can't proudly say, 'I'm back!' "I have thought a lot about the career I still want to pursue and about showing you all how I am making great strides overseas. However, given the current situation, I wanted to dedicate this moment to Yokohama F. Marinos, so I have returned with a strong resolve." The centre-back added: 'I will fight with all my heart so that F. Marinos can be F. Marinos, and so that they can be where they belong. I hope you will support me.' Tsunoda's departure means he leaves Cardiff without a single minute of senior football to his name, one of several overseas signings made during a turbulent recruitment period that failed to pay off. Cardiff have trimmed their squad considerably this summer following relegation to League One, with new head coach Barry-Murphy overseeing a rebuild ahead of the new season. Incomings are now expected to follow. Bluebirds hammer Wolves in friendly Cardiff's under-21s battered Premier League counterparts Wolves 5-0 in their final pre-season friendly. Darren Purse's side took on the Category One side in Leckwith as they gear up for the start of their Premier League Development 2 campaign - and ended in perfect fashion. Will Spiers, one of the rising stars who caught the eye of a number of fans for his impressive displays for Barry-Murphy's senior side in pre-season, scored twice from right-back. Captain Luke Pearce, another who is steadily scooting under the radar, also scored, while Jake Davies and Troy Perrett, who was reportedly subject of transfer interest from Aston Villa a few months back, were also on the scoresheet. Barry-Murphy will doubtless be keeping an eye on these performances, with the new head coach keen to give Cardiff's youth an opportunity, as evidenced by his youthful starting XI in the win over Peterborough United at the weekend. Cardiff's PDL2 campaign kicks off with a home tie against Sheffield United next Tuesday. Two Cardiff Vertu Trophy fixtures confirmed Cardiff City will kick off their 2025/26 EFL Trophy campaign with an away clash against Exeter City at St James Park on Tuesday, September 16. The Bluebirds have also announced their second group-stage fixture, which will see them host Newport County at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, October 7. Details for the third and final group game, against Arsenal Under-21s, are yet to be confirmed and will be announced in the coming weeks. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, which will remain regionalised until the quarter-final stage. Article continues below This season's EFL Trophy final is scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Neville, 50, was left in awe several times by the ingenious stadium. From a micro-brewery on site to links with Tottenham's famous past, no stone was left unturned as the Lilywhites built their new home. Here, SunSport takes a look around arguably the Premier League's best stadium. Kane's mega-box During his conversation with Neville, Levy was keen to show off Tottenham's plush VIP lounges. And where better to start than the one previously occupied by the club's all-time leading goalscorer prior to his £100million switch to Bayern Munich two years ago - complete with stunning kitchen, comfortable seats and an incredible view. Levy said: "This used to be Harry Kane's box." To which Neville exclaimed: "Jeez Harry! My mum and dad would have been happy if they were watching me at United and I gave them a box like this every week! Harry's got a bigger kitchen than I've got at home in his box. "I've never been in one of these before and it's absolutely incredible." Daniel Levy says he'll get the credit he deserves when he leaves Tottenham in rare interview Levy's biggest regret During Neville's tour of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the former Manchester United star realised just what a hands on approach Levy had taken in the project. While standing in the 17,500-capacity South Stand, Neville couldn't help but cheekily ask if there was anything Levy would have liked to have done differently, with hindsight. Levy, 63, beamed as he said: "There's a couple of pillars that I wish weren't there at the moment. "Pillars when you drive in under the stadium, it's a bit tight." 20 Levy bemoaned the underground parking at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Credit: Alamy 20 Levy grinned as he admitted that the parking is tight Credit: YouTube @ The Overlap Retractable pitch Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is not just used for football. Since opening, the venue has also been used for NFL games, rugby matches and several concerts, including the likes of Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga. Asked about how the surface "transforms" for different events, Levy revealed: "Underneath all the protective measures on the pitch is actually the NFL pitch. "There's an artificial pitch there. Then above this would be the grass pitch, and when we're in concert mode or NFL mode, the grass pitch goes under the famous South Stand. "It can stay there for up to 10-14 days. It has ventilation, irrigation, special mowers - so it's pretty unique piece of kit." 20 Tottenham Hotspur Stadium features an entirely separate NFL pitch Credit: The Times 20 Beyonce is among the superstar artists to have performed in Tottenham Credit: Getty Hidden F1 track In addition to the NFL, Tottenham have also partnered with Formula 1. Within it is a 400-year-old listed building, which the club have restored and turned into an art gallery. Showing Neville around, Levy said: "There's a very old building called Warmington House. It's about 400 years old. Yep [it's listed]. "We had to keep it, we restored it... and it's now an art gallery. It's a beautiful building that we've completely restored." Neville was left in awe of the structure, replying: "It's brilliant. I love the integration of the old brick with the modern glass look." 20 Tottenham have turned a listed building into an art gallery Credit: YouTube @The Overlap 20 Spurs restored the 400-year-old building Credit: YouTube @The Overlap 20 Significant Spurs artwork now lines the wall of the building Pieces of history At the very start of Neville's tour, Levy proudly showed off a link with Tottenham's past. The Spurs chairman said: "Do you know about this floor? This is the old stadium." As Neville said "Oh wow," Levy continued: "All crushed. We wanted to have a link with the old, White Hart Lane and the history. "It's literally crushed concrete and smoothed afterwards." Within the South Stand concourse, there is also a plaque on the floor, marking where the centre spot within the old White Hart Lane used to be. 20 Tottenham used materials from their old White Hart Lane stadium for the floor Credit: YouTube @ The Overlap 20 Fans are able to see where White Hart Lane's centre spot used to sit Credit: X @SpursOfficial Borussia Dortmund-inspired stand The 17,500-capacity South Stand is Tottenham Hotspur Stadium's most obvious landmark. Levy takes great pride in the uniqueness of Tottenham's home - but does give credit to another club for the brilliant single-tiered stand. On inspiration for the new stadium, Levy said: "I wouldn't say there was one stadium that we said 'we need it to be like this'. "I think Dortmund in terms of our South Stand, the Yellow Wall. That's where we got the South Stand idea from." 20 Tottenham's incredible 17,500-capacity South Stand is a magnificent sight Credit: Getty 20 Spurs took inspiration for Dortmund's remarkable Yellow Wall Credit: Getty Incredible dressing room In contract to White Hart Lane's more old school dressing rooms, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium features huge, plush modern changing areas. In awe, Neville said: "Dressing rooms never cease to amaze me now, how good they are. "Wow. I remember the old White Hart Lane changing rooms." When Levy said the new dressing rooms were a "bit different" from the old, Neville laughed as he said: "Just a bit!" The inner bowels of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium also feature huge NFL dressing rooms. Much bigger than the football changing areas, due to the size of NFL rosters, the larger dressing rooms came in handy during Covid, giving players an opportunity to social distance on matchday. 20 Neville was very impressed with Spurs' plush dressing room Credit: Getty Beer brewed on site Tottenham partnered with Molson Coors last month, confirming that Coors, Madri, Rekorderlig and Cobra will be on the menu at home games next season, as well as Pravha. Fans will still be able to get Beavertown products, brewed especially on site. Showing Neville the micro-brewery, located between the South and East Stands, Levy explained: "We're very conscious with what we do with the local community. "One of our ideas was to have a craft beer, so we teamed up with a company called Beavertown, which was a craft beer company that was based locally. "We then said to them that we would like to brew our own beer in the stadium. So this is our brewery, in a joint-venture with Beavertown." When Neville asked if Spurs had bought into Beavertown, Levy said: "We didn't buy into it... unfortunately" At this point both men laughed as Levy rued the missed opportunity. The Tottenham chief then added: "But we did a joint-venture, in terms of all the beer sold in the stadium."

I don't think about it – Liverpool's Florian Wirtz unfazed by £100m price tag
Liverpool's record signing Florian Wirtz insists his price tag is irrelevant to him and he is just focused on making the Premier League champions better ahead of their title defence. The Germany attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100million, with a further £16m of achievable add-ons making his move from Bayer Leverkusen a potentially British record-breaking one. Advertisement However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening, the 22-year-old brushed off the figures involved. Wirtz insists his price tag does not affect him (Peter Byrne/PA) 'I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' he said. 'Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. 'I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my team-mates into better situations. Advertisement 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying to play with these players and getting every time a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going.' Wirtz's game is based around carrying the ball with purpose and bringing team-mates into play with his close control and lots of touches in and around the penalty area. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Florian Wirtz (@flowirtz) However, he will also provide a goal threat – he scored 57 times in 197 appearances for Leverkusen – and almost broke the deadlock against Bilbao with a header which clipped the crossbar. He may find the Premier League is less forgiving than the Bundesliga but he is looking forward to finding out. Advertisement 'I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me because I have to respect the position and the players around me,' he added.
