Former Valentine ISD employee sentenced to prison for stealing federal funds
PECOS, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A former Valentine Independent School District employee was sentenced in a federal court in Pecos to 27 months in prison for wire fraud and theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.
According to court documents, Ernesto Villarreal Jr., 43, of Marfa, was employed as the Business Manager and served as the Tax Collector and Assessor for the Valentine ISD, in Valentine, Texas. During his time as an agent of Valentine ISD, Villarreal schemed to defraud Valentine ISD by using two ISD credit cards to make hundreds of unauthorized personal purchases totaling over $100,000; issued over $10,000 in unauthorized checks to himself from Valentine ISD accounts; and issued over $20,000 in unauthorized checks from Valentine ISD accounts to cover personal expenses owed to a credit card company.
He also changed the bank account information for certain current and former employees, then generated over $100,000 in fraudulent payments to those current and former employees, for work that did not actually occur. Villarreal then routed those payments to his own personal bank accounts, all without the knowledge or permission of the employees.
Villarreal used the fraudulent funds for hundreds of personal purchases, including travel, lodging, home improvements, hardware store purchases, personal cell phone bills, fuel, oil changes, convenience store purchases, Airbnb rentals, personal flight purchases, and various other unauthorized purchases. The total loss to Valentine ISD was $314,497.74.
Villarreal was arrested on June 24, 2024, and pleaded guilty on November 20 to all nine counts against him. In addition to imprisonment, U.S. District Court Judge David Counts ordered Villarreal to pay restitution to Valentine ISD in the amount of $314,497.74 and ordered a forfeiture money judgment against Villarreal in the amount of $291,853.90.
'Mr. Villarreal abused his positions and the trust given to him, to steal and defraud the Valentine ISD—one of the smallest school districts in Texas—out of more than $300,000,' said Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman for the Western District of Texas. 'This investigation, conviction, and sentence in this case all show that this type of dishonest behavior will not be tolerated.'
'The foundation of any financial system is trust—and the expectation that those persons entrusted with public funding will honor that trust and act with integrity. As the Valentine School District Business Manager and Tax Collector/Assessor, Villarreal held a position of absolute trust. Instead, he chose to betray that trust by misappropriating funds that were destined for students,' said Special Agent in Charge John Morales for FBI El Paso. 'Most students and everyday citizens don't have access to institutional finances to be able to question discrepancies or missing funds. That is why the FBI El Paso, alongside our law enforcement partners, is committed to uncovering financial wrongdoing and ensuring those who believe they can quietly take $300,000 without consequence are held fully accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.'

Suspect wanted in Hobbs teen's murder surrenders after five days
HOBBS, New Mexico (KMID/KPEJ) – The man wanted in connection with a deadly Hobbs shooting that took the life of a teenager has turned himself in. According to the Hobbs Police Department, 20-year-old Michael Alonzo Wynne Garcia surrendered to authorities on the night of June 11, 2025. He was arrested by the Lea County Sheriff's Office in Lovington, New Mexico, and booked into the Lea County Detention Center. Garcia was wanted for murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer stemming from a June 6 shooting that left 19-year-old Ismael Rios, of Hobbs, dead and another person injured. Police said the shooting happened in the 800 block of East Lincoln. Officers responding to the scene found two people with gunshot wounds. One victim was flown to a hospital for treatment and has since been released. Rios, however, died from his injuries. Shortly after the shooting, Garcia was briefly spotted in a red Toyota Camry but reportedly fled from officers as they approached. Investigators credited the public with aiding in the search, saying community members played a vital role in sharing information and reporting tips about Garcia's whereabouts. Midland man arrested for allegedly using truck to hit wife during domestic dispute
MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A Midland man is facing a felony charge after police say he intentionally struck his wife with a vehicle during an argument Saturday morning. 61-year-old Ralph Allan Olson was arrested on June 7 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $75,000. As of Monday, Olson remained in custody at the Midland County Detention Center. No attorney was listed for him in court records. According to an arrest affidavit, Midland Police responded to a call just after 9 a.m., near Holloway Drive, for a reported accident involving a pedestrian. Officers arrived and found the victim, identified as Olson's wife, with visible scrapes and bruises on both knees and her left arm. Olson allegedly told officers that he and his wife had been in a verbal argument earlier that morning. He said he left the home but returned a short time later and saw her walking near the curb. Olson admitted he 'sped by out of spite' following the argument and struck her with his brown Ford F-150 on the passenger side of the vehicle. The victim confirmed the couple had been arguing and said she was walking along the curb when she noticed Olson's truck approaching. She told officers she was struck by the passenger-side hood and mirror, which knocked her to the ground. Despite her injuries, she initially told police she did not want to pursue charges. However, officers reviewed security footage from a nearby residence, which reportedly showed Olson driving at a high rate of speed through the residential neighborhood and making no attempt to avoid hitting the woman until after the impact. The video also showed that the victim was walking near the curb and not obstructing the roadway. Several witnesses told police that Olson did not immediately return to the scene after the collision. Due to the totality of the evidence, including Olson's admission, video footage, and eyewitness accounts, he was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. MCSO searching for suspect who evaded on motorcycle
MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The Midland County Sheriff's Office has asked for help from the community to identify a suspect accused of evading arrest. According to Crime Stoppers, on May 30, investigators with the MCSO tried to contact a man at the Kent Kwik located in the 5000 block of Highway 349. However, the man ran from deputies, got on his motorcycle, and sped away from the parking lot. MCSO said that investigators followed the motorcycle, but it continued to evade, reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. When the suspect reached Interstate 20, he began to drive on the wrong side of the road and, because of safety concerns, investigators terminated the pursuit; but still want to identify the man who got away.
