Indian Squad Announced For AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers

News186 hours ago

The group winners will qualify for the final tournament in Australia in March 2026. The Women's Asian Cup also serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027.
Chettri and his squad will arrive in Thailand on Monday evening, and will train for a week in the northern city of Chiang Mai before their first game. All matches will take place at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium. The Blue Tigresses camped at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru for six weeks, and as part of their preparations for the Qualifiers, played two friendlies against Uzbekistan on May 30 and June 3, losing 0-1 on both occasions.
'I was happy with the preparations in Bengaluru," said Chettri. 'We trained for more than 40 days. The training ground and all the facilities were excellent. As far as the squad is concerned, we have a good mixture of young and senior players. Unfortunately, we had to let go of forwards like Karishma (Shirvoikar), Sandhiya (Ranganathan) and Renu due to injuries. But that's part and parcel of football. And as compared to the Pink Ladies Cup squad (in February), we have more experienced players with us now."
The Indian coach tried various combinations during the two preparatory friendlies against Uzbekistan, rotating as many as eight players for the second game and handing out a total of five debuts.
'We had a clear plan for those two friendlies. We were trying to find the right combination for the qualifiers because we have to play almost four games in 13 days. Rotating players and giving them proper recovery time is important. We created many more chances in the second game as compared to the first, but the conversion was the problem, and that's what we'll work on in the coming days," said Chettri.
To adjust to the more humid weather of Chiang Mai, the Blue Tigresses will arrive in the city a week before the first match against Mongolia. They will also have a five-day gap before taking on Timor Leste in the second game.
'I'm pleased with the federation for sending us early to Thailand. There is ample time for acclimatisation and recovery. In Bengaluru, the weather has been very pleasant. But Chiang Mai is quite hot and humid at this time of the year. So, this week will help us a lot in our preparation," Chettri added.

Japan's ASICS to boost India sportswear production to 40% amid import restrictions, executive says

Japanese sportswear giant ASICS will ramp up India manufacturing to 40% from 30% over the next few years to ensure steady supply, a top executive told Reuters, as the country's regulations force global brands to pause imports of footwear. The Indian government has mandated certain standards for various footwear segments, requiring both domestic and foreign manufacturers to obtain quality certifications. ASICS, which has also paused imports, said bringing in footwear from any country is not feasible without government certification. "To address this critical situation, we are strategically developing local production capabilities," ASICS India Managing Director Rajat Khurana said. For financial year 2024-25, ASICS reached 30% local production, a government-mandated threshold that allows foreign brands to operate their own single-brand stores in India. The firm, which operates roughly 125 stores through franchise partners, plans to open its first brand-owned store this year and is scouting locations in and around Delhi and Mumbai , Khurana said. It aims to set up a couple more over the next few years. ASICS, which competes with global rivals including Nike, Adidas , and Skechers USA in India, also plans to open three new franchise stores per month between now and the end of the year. For 2024-25, ASICS projected revenue growth of 35%-37% in India, following a 26% jump in the previous fiscal year that lifted its revenue to 4.28 billion rupees ($49.7 million). The local sporting goods and apparel category is expected to double to $58 billion by 2030 from 2023 levels, according to a 2024 report by consultancy firm Deloitte. Known for its running shoes, ASICS is benefiting from a growing fitness culture in India and rising interest in tennis and pickleball among affluent urban consumers.

The Big Four Still Lie 'Just Below Tendulkar', States ENG Legend James Anderson

Last Updated: While The Big Four represent the modern era's pinnacle of batting excellence, Sachin Tendulkar stands as a timeless benchmark. 'What's a King to a God?' Well, James Anderson remains a believer in the 'God of Cricket', as he rubbished talks of any of the modern day 'Big Four' — consisting of the likes of Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson — being better than Sabhin Tendulkar himself. England's legendary fast bowler James Anderson relished his encounters with Sachin Tendulkar and the Big Four throughout his 21-year career. But when it boiled down to who amongst them was the best, in Anderson's mind, the answer was no-nonsense: Tendulkar all day. Source: Talk Sport Cricket dated 14th May, 2025.. — AT10 (@Loyalsachfan10) June 16, 2025 'Where do those four (Kohli, Root, Smith, Kane) compare with Tendulkar?" asked TalkSport, to which Anderson, without a second's thought, replied, 'Just below Tendulkar". 'The Big Four" players have dominated international cricket since the early 2010s, raising the standards of batting across all formats. However, any discussion about batting greatness inevitably leads to comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricket legend often hailed as the 'God of Cricket." Sachin Tendulkar's statistical record remains monumental: having scored 100 international centuries (51 in Tests, 49 in ODIs), 34,357 international runs (most by any player), over a 24-year career. In contrast, the Big Four, while exceptional, still chase some of these milestones with hopes of coming close to Tendulkar. As of mid-2025, Virat Kohli is closest, with 80+ international centuries and over 26,000 runs. Steve Smith boasts one of the highest Test batting averages since Bradman. Joe Root has over 12,000 Test runs and continues to be England's batting mainstay. Finally, Kane Williamson, though less flashy, is New Zealand's most consistent batsman ever. Yet, Tendulkar set records that remain aspirational even for this elite group. While The Big Four represent the modern era's pinnacle of batting excellence, Sachin Tendulkar stands as a timeless benchmark. His achievements were not just about numbers but about redefining cricket in a pre-IPL, pre-T20 world. The Big Four, playing in a more commercial, fast-paced era, have adapted brilliantly but remain in the long shadow of Tendulkar's legacy. In essence, comparing the Big Four to Sachin is not about who is better—it is about recognizing different eras of greatness. Tendulkar laid the foundation; the Big Four continue to build on it.
