Akron football ineligible for postseason due to Academic Progress Rate score
The NCAA this week updated its national APR database with the latest scores of member institutions. Akron had a score of 914, below the 930 minimum for postseason eligibility.
Akron's athletic department has not commented on its APR penalty and did not return immediately messages left by The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Akron, which plays in the Mid-American Conference, has not been to a bowl game since 2017, which also was the last time the Zips won more than four games in a season.
But Akron's 4-8 record in 2024 under third-year coach Joe Moorhead was its best since posting the same mark in 2018. In between, the Zips won no more than two games in a season and went winless (0-12) in 2019.
The last Division I Football Bowl Subdivision football team to be barred from postseason play because of APR scores was Idaho in the 2014 season.
The NCAA temporarily suspended some APR penalties, including postseason bans, because of the COVID-19 pandemic that began disrupting college athletics in the spring of 2020.
However, the NCAA's Committee on Academics voted to restore such penalties beginning with four-year scores released during the 2024-25 academic year.

Tennis fans are sending messages of support to American legend Monica Seles after the nine-time grand slam champion revealed for the first time she's been dealing with a rare neuromuscular autoimmune disease. Speaking to The Associated Press on Tuesday, the 51-year-old revealed she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) in 2022. The disease affects between 150-200 per million people around the world, and causes weakness in voluntary muscles. It usually affects women under 40 and men over 60, although it can impact anyone at any age. Seles said she'd been experiencing episodes of double vision and had weaknesses in her arm and leg. Simple activities like "blowing her hair out" became increasingly difficult. And it was while she was swinging a racquet that her issues were fully laid bare. 'I would be playing with some kids or family members, and I would miss a ball. I was like, 'Yeah, I see two balls.'," she revealed. "These are obviously symptoms that you can't ignore. "And for me, this is when this journey started. And it took me quite some time to really absorb it, speak openly about it, because it's a difficult one. It affects my day-to-day life quite a lot.' Seles is speaking publicly for the first time ahead of the US Open - which starts on August 24 - in the hope she can raise awareness. 'When I got diagnosed, I was like, 'What?!'" she said. "So this is where - I can't emphasize enough - I wish I had somebody like me speak up about it.' Monica Seles forced to 'reset' yet again Seles said she's been trying to fine her 'new normal', but is no stranger to overcoming adversity. She left her family and moved to the US from Yugoslovia when she was just 13, and was at the centre of an awful incident in 1993 when she was stabbed by a crazed fan during a match in Germany. She took two years out of the game before returning in 1995. 'I had to, in tennis terms I guess, reset - hard reset - a few times," she said. "I call my first hard reset when I came to the US as a young 13-year-old. Didn't speak the language, left my family. It's a very tough time. "Then, obviously, becoming a great player, it's a reset, too, because the fame, money, the attention, changes (everything), and it's hard as a 16-year-old to deal with all that. Then obviously my stabbing - I had to do a huge reset. 'And then, really, being diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis - another reset. But one thing, as I tell kids that I mentor: 'You've got to always adjust. That ball is bouncing, and you've just got to adjust. And that's what I'm doing now.' "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer said in a statement Tuesday on social media. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends." Mateer, who was at Washington State during the time in question, said he can understand why the Venmo descriptions could lead one to believe otherwise, so he decided to set the record straight. "I have never bet on sports," he said. "I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling." Mateer followed former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma this past offseason. The first baseman blasted his 253rd career home run in the third inning against the Braves on Tuesday, breaking a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in franchise history. Alonso has appeared in 963 games for the Mets, who drafted him in the second round of the 2016 draft, later making his MLB debut in 2019. The first baseman had 26 home runs this season coming into the game, tying Strawberry's mark on Saturday, and outside of the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Alonso has hit at least 34 home runs every year.
